BRING YOUR HAPPY FEET TO THE GREAT SCHAGHTICOKE FAIR March, skip or dance your way into the great Schaghticoke Fair, Wednesday, August 29th through Monday, September 3rd. Introducing the first ever fair-wide theme to the 193rd annual fair, the idea was originated by Homemaking Superintendent, Marilou Town and Flowers Superintendent, Nancy ODonnell. The idea of having a fair wide theme originated in the Family Living Center last year, during the fair when creative exhibits and entries were displayed. With support from other building superintendents the concept quickly caught on and throughout the week of the fair, there will be Happy Feet signage displayed all over the various buildings and barns. A scavenger hunt for the children will take place daily and the questions will be provided at the Family Living Center. One step further, the superintendents wanted to open it up to the students of Rensselaer County and the inception of a design contest came alive. Lauren Madigan, a student of Hoosic Valley High School, is the first winner of the Happy Feet design contest. The requirements were to be a currently enrolled high school student in Rensselaer County and to incorporate the elements of agriculture and horticulture to represent the Rensselaer County Agricultural and Horticultural Society, otherwise known as the Schaghticoke Fair. The design was chosen based on content and creativity. Laurens design will be featured on the cover of the 2012 Schaghticoke Fair brochure and also on t-shirts that will be sold at Cottonwood Square in the Arts and Crafts Building for $10.00 throughout the week of the fair. In addition, Lauren will become an honorary judge for future themed fair design contests and will be presented a certificate of achievement on stage in the park on Friday, August 31st at 5:30pm. Speaking of Happy Feet, on Wednesday evening from 6pm - 8pm, Radio Disney will rock the fair with a street party for the kids with fun games and cool contests for everyone to enjoy. Radio Disney will also be providing prizes and fun give-a ways. On Thursday, Senior Day (admission only $5.00 if you are 62 or older) come and participate with Fritzs Polka Band and join in at the dance party at 4 & 8. Trophies will be awarded for Best Dressed & Best Dance Couples. Friday through Monday, the areas best bands and Nashvilles favorites will be providing toe-tapping entertainment. For a complete list of fair entertainment, go to www.schaghticokefair.org. So, come on out to the third oldest fair in New York State and make sure you wear comfortable shoes and bring your Happy Feet!

FORT SALEM THEATER : Significant Others, a collection of three one-act musical comedies about marriage, conflict, separation, divorce, and reconciliation, Friday and Saturday evening performances, August 24-5, and a final matinee, Sunday, August 26. The first act, To Have and to Hold, finds two married Manhattanites having received a letter from New York State that informs them that their thirty-three year-old union has never been legal, and that if they wish to be married, they must marry again. Given the choice to stay married or become single, they waffle, despite the pleadings of their favorite date couple, who implore them to remain together. In In Sickness and in Health, actress Kathleen Devine, in a tour de force solo song, reviews the entirety of her marriage, through courtship, childbearing and rearing, family victories and tragedies, and death. The final act, Until Death Do Us Part, brings Broadway actors Bill Carmichael and Jim Raposa as a tired former vaudeville team doing a television variety show in the Golden Age of Television, they each explore the possibilities of leaving the team and creating a new one with the girl singer on the broadcast. Saratogas Rosie Spring plays Delilah DeMint, the singer, who herself has eyes for the comedian on the broadcast, played by New York standup comic, Adam Kerr. Marriage and commitment wins hands down. Thats the underlying message of Significant Others. Significant Others closes in Salem this weekend. NIGHT VISITORS. Storytelling duo Taradiddle will bring tales and tunes of Night Visitors to the Pember Library on Thursday, August 30th at 6:00PM in an interactive program for the whole family. Price of admission? One knock-knock joke! From the slightly spooky Strange Visitor to the definitely unpleasant Terrible Nung Guama, you never know whoor whatmight come calling in the still of the night. (Dont be overly alarmed Santa is the most famous night visitor of all, you know!) Storytelling duo Jean Roberts and Daphne Bartholomew (Taradiddle) are former public librarians with over 20 years experience sharing tales and tunes in library and school settings from a summer program in the tiniest library to a literacy celebration in a school gym. The audience is always invited to join in as Daphne and Jean weave together stories and songs from sources old and new into engaging, theme-based programs. Their goal is to reintroduce children and families to the pleasures of live performance. Info: (518) 642-2525 http://pember.sals.edu

GREENWICH RECYCLING NOW TAKES CREDIT CARDS Recycling fees can now be paid right at the recycling center in Greenwich with credit or debit cards. The fee for a one-ticket equivalent is $2.32. Attendants at the recycling center record all transactions and process the credit card purchases on an IPAD, with VISA and MASTERCARD credit and debit cards accepted. Residents still have the option of using tickets purchased elsewhere as well. Traffic flow has also been changed for more effective flow. The original exit is now the entrance and the old entrance is now the exit. An attendant will meet cars as they enter and process a credit card transaction or take the recycling tickets purchased elsewhere. Attendants are still there to aid those requiring help. The county recycling centers are the most cost efficient way to dispose of your trash. They are price competitive with private haulers and offer more services such as disposal of refrigerators, electronic equipment, construction and demolition products, yard waste and brush. The centers also offer recycling in specific categories of plastic and paper products, which is more environmentally friendly than single-stream recycling, which is used by most private haulers. Citizens save money, the county coffers benefit, and the environment benefits when people use their recycling centers.
