Assingment 1 (Dimension and Unit) a) b) Define terms of base quantity, derived quantity, unit and SI unit. State five (5); i) base quantities with dimension, symbol of quantity and SI units respectively ii) derived quantities with dimension, symbol and SI units respectively. c) The human heartbeat, as determined by the pulse rate, is normally about 60 beats/min. If the heart pumps 75 mL of blood per beat, calculate volume of blood pumped in one week. State your answer in cubic meter. How many (mm)2 are there in 4.0 (in)2 ? An old (and ridiculous) unit of thermal conductivity sometimes still encountered in building materials is Btu.hr-1.in.F-1.ft-2 where; 1 Btu = 1054.8 J , 1 in = 2.54 cm , 1 ft2 = 0.0929 m2, 9 F = 5 C . What is 1 (Btu.hr-1.in.F-1.ft-2) in proper units (W.m-1.C-1)? f) Show that the expression given below is dimensionally correct, where; (i) P = g) (ii) ln Nd/Na = - [ Vghd( - l)] / kT

d) e)

Given mv = Ft, where m is mass, v is speed, F is force, and t is time, what are the dimensions of each side of the equation? Is the equation dimensionally correct? Given P = kAT/l, where A is the area, T is difference in temperature, l is length, and k is a constant with SI units of watts pr (metrekelvin), what are the SI units for P (rate of thermal energy flow)?

(Force and Motion) a) i) List THREE (3) examples of scalar and vector quantities respectively ii) Define: i) Law of inertia ii) Newtons Second Law iii) Newtons Third Law iii) Define force and balance force. b) i) Does the displacement of an object depend on the specific location of the origin of the coordinate system? ii) Does the speedometer in a car measure velocity or speed? iii) You throw a ball upward with an initial speed of 10 m/s. Assuming that there is no air resistance, what is its speed when it returns to you? iv) The graph of position versus time for a car is given in Figure 1. What can you say about the velocity of the car over time?

c) i) If two vectors are given such that A + B = 0, what can you say about the magnitude and direction of vectors A and B? ii) Given that A + B = C, and that lAl 2 + lBl 2 = lCl 2, how are vectors A and B oriented with respect to each other? iii) Refer to figure 2, you (red) are trying to hit a friend (black) with a water balloon. He is sitting in the window of his dorm room directly across the street. You aim straight at him and shoot. Just when you shoot, he falls out of the window! Does the water balloon hit him?
