Space shuttle Discovery makes final takeoff

After three decades of space service, NASA's oldest and most traveled shuttle, Discovery, began its new life as a museum relic Tuesday with one final takeoff. Discovery departed Florida's Kennedy Space Center at daybreak this past Tuesday aboard a modified jumbo jet bound for Washington, where it will become a Smithsonian exhibit. Nearly 2,000 people former shuttle workers, VIPs, tourists and journalists gathered along the old shuttle landing strip to see Discovery off. A cheer went up as the plane taxied down the runway and soared into a clear sky. The plane and shuttle headed south and made one last flight over the beaches of Cape Canaveral thousands jammed the shore for a glimpse of Discovery then returned to the space center in a final salute. Cheers erupted once more as the pair came in low over the runway it had left 20 minutes earlier and finally turned toward the north. A similar flyover was planned over the monuments in the nation's capital, later in the morning. Discovery the fleet leader with 39 orbital missions is the first of the three retired space shuttles to head to a museum. It will go on display at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, taking the place of the shuttle prototype Enterprise. The Enterprise will go to New York City. Endeavour will head to Los Angeles this fall. Atlantis will remain at Kennedy. NASA ended the shuttle program last summer after a 30-year run to focus on destinations beyond low-Earth orbit. Private U.S. companies hope to pick up the slack, beginning with space station cargo and then, hopefully, astronauts.

Hello once again to each and every one of you. I want to Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading this newspaper. The support system that makes any business last has been tested as of late. Do not fear, we have no intentions of faltering out of your sight. But just as any other business, you must know yourself well enough to trust yourself. From the lessons learned, to all of the lessons still waiting to be discovered. The fact remains the same that as long as your in business, you have a chance. A chance at becoming the one whom people not like you, accept you, and are somewhat proud of seeing you promote their home town/county. Or you could easily become another statistic of those who tried and couldnt make it past the 5 yr. mark, fold and be done. My personal determination to keep this newspaper in your town is far too strong to allow this avenue to turn into a closed road. Ive heard plenty of praises at places I go to remain strong and hang in there. For it is a small businessmans heart that made this country what it is. The beliefs stand strong within this company to remain unique and allow the people a voice when they need one. To provide valuable information to the residents of Walton county. This has all my thoughts racing. When I sat down to write this column I had a thought of how businesses are like ships..As people were celebrating the Titanic's 100th anniversary this past Sunday, the doomed luxury liner seems to be sailing across every television and computer screen. Amidst the attention paid to a British ship's tragic end, the most famous ocean liner that never sank still bears the proud name United States. Though sadly overlooked by most Americans, our nation's flagship still serves as an enduring symbol of American postwar power, pride and innovation. For example, The Titanic carried more than 1,500 passengers to a watery grave on her first Atlantic crossing, the SS United States barreled across the ocean on her recordbreaking maiden voyage averaging 35.59 knots or more than 40 miles per hour. On that historic trip in 1952, America's answer to Europe's dominance of the seas sped through the water with such force that bow waves blasted the paint off her hull. She became the fastest ocean liner ever built using only two-thirds of her power and still holds the trans-Atlantic speed record for a passenger ship, nearly 60 years after her launch. The SS United States could go faster in reverse than the Titanic could travel forward. After a ticker tape parade up the Canyon of Heroes in New York honoring her crew, the "Big U" went on to serve for 17 mishap-free years, carrying more than a million passengers across the sea, including four U.S. presidents, business moguls, movie stars, military personnel and immigrants beginning new lives on our shores. Built as part of a top-secret Pentagon project to create the safest and fastest ocean liner ever constructed, the 1,000-foot-liner is 100 feet longer than the Titanic. The size of the Chrysler Building, the SS United States served as both a luxury liner and Cold War weapon, capable of transporting 15,000 troops, 10,000 miles without refueling! Like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the Washington Monument, there is only one SS United States. Thanks in part to lessons learned from the Titanic's tragic demise, the SS United States was designed for safety. The ship's dual engine rooms ensured that she could still make port even if one of them flooded. The ship's aluminum superstructure eliminated the need for "expansion joints" small seams in the steel superstructure that contributed to the Titanic's breakup. As I stated earlier on, that business is like a ship. It doesnt take you to build one to learn from others and see what may work best for you. The things you like most is normally what you carry onto the next person, place or business. You try to learn from others mistakes but sometimes you gotta make one of your own to learn. Thanks for reading.

WCSO seeks information WCSO offering Advanced from the public in a 41 year Civilian Firearms courses old cold case
The Walton County Sheriffs Office (WCSO) is asking for the publics assistance in helping solve a cold case from 41 years ago. According to Major Bill Chapman, Bobby Ray Jones was 33 years old at the time he lost his life. The murder occurred on Thursday, September 30, 1971 at the Longbranch Bar, located on Hwy 2 in Darlington, FL. Jones had been working at the bar for 3-4 weeks when he was killed. Jones often stayed at the bar after hours, due to recent thefts. On the night of the murder, Jones and his wife were there. Jones got up and answered a knock at the side door of the establishment. Jones wife heard her husband having a conversation with someone and then she heard gun shots. Bobby Ray Jones was found lying down by the side door, with no signs of struggle and nothing missing from the establishment. We began reviewing this case in January and have spoken to numerous individuals, Chapman said. We have been working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to solve this murder; however, we still need the publics help. Some of the witnesses originally interviewed have died. Chapman said that the Sheriffs Office wants to let the public to know that even though the case is old, it is not something that has been forgotten about. The family deserves closure and we hope to help them with that. If anyone has information about this case, contact Major Bill Chapman at (850) 892-8186. The Walton County Sheriff's Office (WCSO) announces that Advanced Civilian Firearms classes will begin on May 12, 2012 at the Walton County Sheriff's Office Firing Range. It is mandatory that civilians attend the Basic Civilian Firearms course through the Sheriff's Office before signing up for the advanced training. The class will also require the capability of moderate physical activity, such as assuming multiple shooting positions. Those wishing to attend the course must provide their own ammunition (300 rounds), wrap around eye protection and ear protection, 3 pistol magazines or 3 speed loaders for revolvers, and a suitable belt and holster. Proper range clothing must be worn. No tank tops, low cut tops, shorts/skirts, or slick bottom shoes are allowed. The course is 8 hours in length and will cover such topics as mental training to improve odds of survival as well as engaging multiple threats and gun sighting under stressful conditions. The course is broken up into two sessions, with the first session starting at 8 a.m. and lasting until 12 noon. There will be an hour lunch break and the second session will start at 1 p.m., continuing until 5 p.m. The class is limited to 12 individuals. The cost of the course is $100 and only online registration is available. To sign up for the course, visit www.waltonso.org<http:// www.waltonso.org>. Click on the Community tab and then on the Advanced Civilian Firearms tab. Courses are set to occur throughout the year. The classes are scheduled as following: May 12, 2012 June 9, 2012 September 8, 2012 October 13, 2012 November 10, 2012 For further information on this training course, as well as the basic civilian firearms course, please contact Sgt. Johnny Jordan at 850-8928186 or at jjordan@waltonso.org<mailto:jjordan@waltonso. org>.

Walton Commissioners Consider TDC Building

TDC Director Dawn Moliterno reviewed the process and how the county has come to the point of planning for moving the TDC Center to south of U.S. 98. She said they have to go through a process with the state to obtain the property in the State Forest at the intersection of 98 and 331. The ARC process deals with acquiring land. At the last meeting a plan to swap the current TDC Building and land for land on the south side of the intersection and make a nature center for the forest trail head was presented. Moliterno presented the timeline of the process and documents. She said the issue of moving the TDC offices because of changes to the highway, go back to before 2006. As reported on WZEP numerous times, the discussion has taken place ever since the plans to widen U.S. 331 south of the bridge were made. Moliterno said one problem is vehicles trying to turn into the TDC facility. Moliterno said they had looked at separating staff from the visitors center, but because of the amount of interaction decided this was not feasible. They looked at a site on Chat Holley and decided it was not feasible. The deficiencies needs were looked at. She said a decision was made to build a new building that works with the brand. Moliterno explained that a year ago they presented an update and brought recommendations. The strategic plan also had language and was approved. In June of 2011 a resolution was presented by County Administrator Greg Kisela and approved. This began the discussion with Forestry. So far, there has been no signed agreement with Forestry. Cliff Knauer showed the plans they have come up with after a review with Forestry. The area to be developed is about eight acres with the buffer creating about 11 acres. Knauer said the review showed the development would not likely impact any species. Based on a review by the Division of Forestry, they added walks, a trail head connection, the building constructed as fire wise, interactive nature exhibits inside the building and office space for Forestry. Knauer said the location is the best location in Walton County as far as terms of traffic. He said Forestry is agreeable to the idea. Knauer said they did look at other Forestry sites on 98, but called them very wet. Forestry would also like about 80 acres of rights-of-ways dedicated back to the state. Commissioner Sara Comander suggested putting the issue off until after this tourist season. Bonnie McQuiston said the TDC does not need to build displays of the forest. She said every parcel of land on Highway 98 that is not state land is for sale. She questioned why the TDC is trying to build a nature center when they just gave back a property designated as a nature center. She said the unique character of south Walton would be changing. Others questioned how many nature centers are needed in Walton County, why is another trail system needed, why wasnt the public told and shown plans earlier, some questioned the stormwater impact and some questioned why the county does not buy commercial property. Anita Page, with the South Walton Community Council, talked about the settlement agreement from 1999 and preservation. She said the countys easements for roads through the forest is not as big of a threat because the county said in the settlement they were looking for conservation. She also said they are not opposed to the relocation of the TDC building, rather taking from the forest. Page talked about the forest protecting the eco system including the long leaf pine. She told commissioners, as the area south of the bay continues to grow, there will be more buildings but not more forest. A call was made to protect what we have, if not for now then for the future. Several said the TDC Visitor Center is not needed with todays technology; one said it is only needed to provide a restroom break. One resident said the discussion was ludicrous and called it crazy that they would bring up the complaints. He said with thousands of acres in the forest, the project would not impact the environment. He also said this is the perfect spot. He asked why they support the Biophilia Center in a sensitive area, but complain about this. After a lengthy time of public input from a packed house, Commissioner Larry Jones said one aspect he has not heard from is the Florida Forestry Service. Jones said it is something he needs to know. He said they want to use the facility to help advance the forest. He said someone from the Forestry Service would have to stand before him and say, This is a good thing for the forest. Jones also said it is not his intent to do anything that violates the settlement agreement. Jones made a motion to continue the public hearing to May 8th to allow for the Florida Forest Service to attend.

JOKE: Her husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months yet she stayed by his bedside every single day. When he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer. As she sat by him, he said, "You know what? You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business fell, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side. When we lost the house, you gave me support. When my health started failing, you were still by my side. Well, now that I think about it, I think you're a jinx!

Excessive sweating problems for women, tips to help. Caffeinated drinks, such as coffee and colas, and spicy food, such as curries or hot peppers, can cause sweating, especially on your face and head. So can alcohol. Keep a food and drink journal to help you identify which foods or drinks make you sweat heavily. Also, use milder herbs instead of strong spices to add flavor to your food. Bathe or shower daily, using a mild cleanser. You may feel the need to shower more than once a day. If odor bothers you, try using an antibacterial soap to reduce bacteria on the skin. When bacteria mix with sweat, they cause odor. Be sure to dry off completely, since bacteria and germs thrive in dampness. Loose-fitting clothes and natural fabrics like cotton let air circulate around your skin, which slows the buildup of moisture. Stress can cause sweating, and excessive perspiration can cause stress. Relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation. Lower temperatures at home and at work can help reduce sweating. Run a fan or air conditioner. Or open the windows to keep air moving. Drink plenty of cold water and take cool showers or baths. Dress in layered clothing so you can remove or add layers as the temperature changes. In summer, stay out of the sun and do strenuous activities in the morning. Obesity, smoking, and drinking alcohol can cause or intensify heavy sweating. So maintain a healthy weight, say no to cigarettes, and limit excessive alcohol consumption. If excessive sweating causes problems in your life, talk to a doctor about treatments. Botox injections, low-level electrical currents, and some medications can help reduce heavy sweating. Call a doctor right away if you also have fever, weight loss, chest pain, or a rapid heartbeat. Sweating accompanied by any of these symptoms can be a sign of a serious health problem like thyroid disease, tumors, infection, or heart disease. We take walk-ins and appt. can be made by giving us a call at 231-6200.

I was very proud of my County commissioner for standing up to Suzanne Harris. If you didnt read the statement he read during the last commissioner meeting, you need to get one and read it. It brings a lot to light that has been going on in the past. There has been untold thousands spent trying to get someone indicted for something, anything. They settled on an ethic violation, that gets you a slap on the hand and a small fine boy howdy. Our Easter festivities were a huge success. We had a large crowd and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. It still amazes me that people show up with their dogs in tow at these functions in the Freeport Regional Sports Complex. We have signs everywhere that they arent allowed in the park. I noticed one man with three large dogs on a leash. We have children smaller thank the dogs. This could be a problem. I am not anti-pets, because I have one of my own, but it stayed at home where it was comfortable. Gas prices have gone through the roof, but people are coming to this area anyway. This is great to see it keeps everyone working and thats good. The City is doing well. We have a lot on the drawing board and as money becomes available, we will go. We have just installed a large solar panel at the Freeport Regional Sports Complex to offset some of the Chelco fees. There is a special election on May 8th regarding the implementation of a transportation surtax for the Highway 331 bridge. Visit www.votewalton.com for more information and be sure to vote. The Freeport City Council meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday and 4th Thursday of every month, beginning at 7:00 pm in the Freeport council chambers. Come participate in your local government.

Public Input meetings set for Military Sustainability
The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) gave the Eglin Reservation two significant new missions: relocation of the 7th Special Forces Group from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the new Joint Strike Fighter Integrated Training Center. The military presence in our area now generates $5.2 billion each year, providing 59,000 jobs, and $4 billion in sales according to the Haas Center at the University of West Florida. The military is vital to our local economy. The Eglin Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) done after the 2005 BRAC announcement identified encroachment caused by military and civilian uses. The Joint Land Use Study recommended more study of certain areas. This includes properties in Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton Counties, and the cities of Crestview, Laurel Hill, DeFuniak Springs, and Freeport. The Department of Defense's Office of Economic Adjustment provided funding for the Tri-County Small Area Studies in April 2011. The Small Area Studies planning process builds on the regional collaboration begun in the JLUS. The study includes noise, heights of structures, security, and things that affect pilot performance such as night light and glare. It will produce recommendations for new comprehensive plans policies and zoning regulations for consideration by the governing bodies of each jurisdiction. This effort should ensure the public's health, safety, and welfare; and recognize private property rights. Most importantly, it will promote military compatibility to maintain the viability of existing and future mission activities on the Eglin Reservation. Public participation is crucial. Three upcoming public meetings are set to give attendees an opportunity to hear the issues and provide input: Okaloosa County -- Monday, April 23, 2012 at 5:00 p.m., Crestview Community Center, 1446 Commerce Drive, Crestview, FL 32539 Walton County -- Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 5:00 p.m., Woodlawn Community Center, 5520 331 South, DeFuniak Springs, FL 32435 Santa Rosa County -- Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 5:30 p.m., United Way of Santa Rosa Conference Room, 6479 Caroline Street, Milton, FL 32570 Please plan to attend the meeting in your county. The presentations will differ slightly for unique jurisdiction issues. The agenda includes proposed comprehensive plan policies, new or revised regulations, and real estate disclosure procedures. For more information, please contact Ken Little, Military Sustainability Partnership Coordinator at (850) 609-3014, or e-mail at klittle@co.okaloosa.fl.us<mailto:klittle@co.okaloosa.fl.us>.

Man and woman refused to come out of house after domestic violence
Walton County Deputies responded to 234 Weed Patch road off Hwy 20 in Freeport Florida in reference to a reported domestic fight between a man and a woman in the roadway in front of this address. Initial reports had indicated that shots were fired sometime during the argument. Once on scene deputies identified the man as Richard Rodriguez (H/M 40 years of age) and the woman as Jennifer Hawkins (W/F 36 years of age). Witness indicated that they saw both Rodriquez and Hawkins enter their residence shortly after the fight. Deputies on scene attempted contact at the residence, but were unable to make contact with any one inside the residence. Members of the WCSO SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were then called to assist. Crisis Negotiators also attempted to make contact with Rodriquez and Hawkins inside the residence but were unable to. After exhausting all efforts to establish contact, members of the SWAT team approached the house and were able to establish contact at the front door with both Rodriquez and Hawkins. Both were taken into custody without incident. The investigation revealed that Rodriquez and Hawkins were both combative towards each other. Deputies were never able to confirm that any shots were fired during the altercation and no firearm was located. Rodriquez was charged with domestic battery and obstruction and Hawkins was charged with domestic battery. Both were transported to the Walton County Jail.

along with a multi-line telephone system, foot petals, and a head set. Today she is responsible for answering telephone calls from the public; radio traffic from deputies; running criminal histories, driver licenses, and vehicle registrations; and entering call notes on a computer system. On other days, she is busy dispatching calls to firefighters and paramedics, as well as answering calls on 911. She began her career as a telecommunicator approximately 7 years ago. She has worked with South Walton Fire, the EOC, and now the Walton County Sheriffs Office. Manning enjoys her work stating that it is different each day, and that the greatest thing about her job is helping people. Its a good feeling knowing that you can make a difference in someones life. At times, you may be the only life line the caller may have, Manning said. She recalls a time when she was taking calls on 911 and CPR needed to be started. I was taking the 911 call, trying to give directions on how to perform CPR, and dispatching medics, all at the same time. In addition, I had to monitor all three groups (sheriffs office, firefighters, and medics) radio traffic. The area in which the Communications Division is housed is a room with several cubicles, each staffed with a telecommunicator. Communications officers work 12 hour shifts in an area with no windows, but the isolation lends itself to bonding between dispatchers. Bonding is of key importance where team effort is required. The second week in April has been declared as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Sometimes the public, as well as the officers, forget about those behind the radios, and this special week spotlights the achievements of these dedicated public servants who are truly the unseen first responders.

Over the past seventeen years, these became CBAs program areas that help to sustain and provide optimum utilization of our natural resources. Dennis Peters, CBA Advisory Committee Member, commented, CBA programs are helping to protect and restore the natural habitats in Choctawhatchee Bay that we all depend on and cherish. CBAs programs are funded through grants, memberships and donations from the community. To keep these essential programs available, we need the support of families and friends who love Choctawhatchee Bay and want to ensure that this resource is around for generations to comeThank you Destin Area Chamber for helping to make this a possibility. Dear Aunt Ruby, When I was 13, I would cut myself. I stopped around 15 after an attempted overdose that didnt work. I did it because my parents were stressed due to money problems and ignored me or yelled at me a lot. I was also bullied in school. I had just moved here, so there was no one to turn to. Suddenly, in the last week, I have begun binge eating. I see no hope for me graduating, no hope for my life or my future. I wake up wanting to go back to sleep or overdose. My wrists have throbbed at the thought of wanting to cut again, and last night I had a dream of jumping off a building. All day I have had the same daydream of hitting the ground. I cry randomly for no reason. I have thought of multiple ways to kill myself. This just started. I cant see why I cant be happy. My brother is coming home from Afghanistan. I should be ecstatic. I plan on talking to a counselor tomorrow because I am not sure how to handle this. I dont want to get into such a state that Ill let myself overdose again. Thank you for your time. I just need some guidance on how to handle this. Desperate in DFS Dear : You are also a smart girl to be reaching out for help. I hope by the time you read this you will have spoken to a counselor about your feelings, because it appears you are suffering from a severe depression, which can impair a persons judgment. Being bullied at school and worried about graduating would be enough to trigger it. The behaviors you describe mean you need to talk to and probably be medicated by a mental health care professional. If you would have included your contacts I would have already contacted you by now. Please seek help for your situation could easily become worse. We dont want that to happen. Seeking professional help is the best avenue for you to take. Guidance and communication will help you overcome this.

USHER

By M. Vreeland

Exuberant, energetic and eager to please these are just a few of the words used by the staff and volunteers at Alaqua Animal Refuge to describe Usher. This handsome canine is a Labrador Retriever mix who is always happy and ready to play. Looking at that face its hard to imagine anyone could abandon him, but he was found lost and wandering along the roadside. Now he is safe and sound at our peaceful ten acre sanctuary. Content though he may be here with us, in his heart hes hoping to become a member of a loving forever family some day soon. Usher adores a good workout, so finding a special someone who enjoys being active as much as he does would be ideal. Although he is quite the people oriented pup, Usher also gets along well with other dogs, and never passes up the opportunity for a good romp with his friends. So, if youre looking for an enthusiastic playmate who is exceptionally sweet as well as a lot of fun, you should definitely plan on paying Usher a visit. Hell be happy to meet you, and youll be glad to make his acquaintance.

Coach Jones called the young lad in from center field during a Little League game for a conference. "See here Larry," said the coach, "you know the principles of good sportsmanship that the Little League practices. You also know we don't tolerate temper tantrums, shouting at the umpire, or abusive language. Do I make myself clear?" "Yes, sir," replied Larry. "Well, then Larry," sighed Coach Jones, "would you please try to explain it to your mother?"

Walton County Attorney Gives update To Commissioners
As reported by WZEP AM1460

Chamber Gives Update To DFS

As reported by WZEP AM1460

County Attorney Toni Craig presented information on spending public funds on private property. This is in response to a question about whether or not the commissioners can continue to assist private residents when they have a dire emergency need such as a onetime road paving. Craig said a public purpose means the property work has to serve the county. She told the commissioners the key is what is a public purpose. The States Attorney has provided an opinion that, just because an ambulance, fire truck, mail truck, school bus or other service cannot get down your road, this does not qualify you for public funds repairing or maintaining. One residence is a home providing assisted living. The drive is dirt and very rough. It wears out and the ambulance and public transportation has a hard time making it up the roadway. They have come before the commissioners and asked for help with getting the roadway back in shape. Should public funds be spent on private property? Craig said no. She did say the commissioners have the ability to make emergency repairs and it is up to them to determine when. She said the emergencies are generally severe, generally a life safety issue. Commissioner Sara Comander noted you can pay and have the county grade your road. This is a program where the professional county road grader drivers will grade you road or drive when they are in the area. You should go to Public Works or a commissioner office and fill out a right of entry and a form to show where to grade. The cost is $25 for 30 minutes or $50 an hour. If your street sign is green, then you are on a county maintained road and it should be already taken care of. If your street sign is blue, then you are on a private road and public funds cannot be spent to work your road. Craig also presented an ordinance on improving property on county rights-of-ways. The ordinance would require engineer plans and a bond to do work on the county easements. Commissioner Larry Jones said they do not do a lot of fancy entryways in Mossy Head, but residents do put in culverts. Craig said those would be covered. He asked to look at the issue, saying they do not want to put the additional burden on the residents. Mike Judkins said the rights-of-ways are already being used for businesses that do not have enough room for trucks to turn around, so they use the county property. He told commissioners more of these are coming up. He also said people would not put up a $5000 bond to plant a tree. Commissioners agreed to advertise for a public hearing on May 8th. Craig also talked about buying real property. She gave an outline of what she feels should take place when the county is buying property. Commissioner Brannon noted this is basically a due diligence process.

Speaking to the DeFuniak Springs City Council, Mitzie Graff and Kitty Whitney with the Walton Area Chamber of Commerce gave an update. Graff said the Progressive Missionary Baptist Convention is highlighting our area for their upcoming convention in Panama City. Students from Marianna are coming for a tour about architecture and Dennis Ray will give the walking tour. She said the Chamber and City are working to educate locals on the Enterprise Zone. The Chamber had 179 walk in visitors during March. Some were recumbent bikers from Oregon, who liked it so much they stayed for three days. Whitney showed a rack card for the city. She called it a snazzy flashy fun piece and said it will be given to those asking for information about the city. She also talked about better interaction at the Chamber Breakfasts. Whitney says the Chamber has had a good retention rate. The Marvel of Flight is getting more and more displays and aircraft with 87 aircraft already booked to show up. Florida Chautauqua Assembly President Christopher Mitchell said they estimate 6,500 people came to the 2012 Assembly. The Walton Area Chamber is working with the Chautauqua and asked to put some of the history items on display at the Chamber office. The next Assembly will be January 24-27 of 2013. Whitney will be leaving the Chamber. She told the Council she is blessed to be part of what is going on in the County. She says it takes someone who can be available all the time. She said she has a seven year old and needs to concentrate on doing what is right for him. They are now down to five applicants. Whitney says she is only leaving the position, not the community and is staying on several committees. Council member Ron Kelley said they need a Kitty clone. She said when her son is 17, she will be back.

Letter to the EDITOR: Hello Walton County citizens - this is just another reason
that Comander, Jones and Brannon, need to resign or be fired from their commissioner positions WALTON COUNTY IS ONCE AGAIN THE LAUGHING STOCK - Below are two articles written about our lovely commissioners, talking about that the commissioners are now being once again dragged back into court, and our county name being splashed across headlines throughout the South - IT IS DISGUSTING!!! The Daily News and The Panama City Herald, are both demanding Brannon's resignation and I have already made a call to the Florida Supreme Court, and the Governor's office. Please do your part and email the Walton County Supervisor of Elections, Bobby Beasley bbeasley@co.walton.fl.us Another email from Walton County Commission chairman Scott Brannon has found its way into the hands of his critics. This one which contains the comment Help a nigga out! has sparked calls for Brannon to resign. Read the e-mail in question Brannon, however, said the controversy has been blown completely out of context and proportion. He said he was quoting Tupac, a music artist he listens to. The email, which discusses county business, also violates a judges order stating Walton County commissioners cannot send such emails from private email accounts, attorney Matt Gaetz said. It provides further proof that Brannon should be held in contempt of the order, issued in 2009, the first time county officials got caught violating the Sunshine Law, Gaetz said.I have seen the email. It is contemptuous, Gaetz said. Gaetz, a Fort Walton Beach state representative and public records attorney, is suing Walton County on behalf of condominium association head Suzanne Harris. A hearing is scheduled today to discuss Gaetzs call for commissioners to be held in contempt for using private email accounts to discuss county business, something Gaetz argues the 2009 judges order expressly prohibits. The latest email in question, from a stack of Brannon emails obtained through public records requests, is a message sent out after 3 a.m. on Nov. 28, 2011.The email, sent to Walton County Tourist Development Council executive director Dawn Moliterno, states in the subject line Prepare a memo/email the same.It asked Moliterno to add information from a GM to the body of another email that would go out to other county officials. Brannon typed in the salutation Dawn and the request, Can you finish this with the text if sent u from GM. Help a nigga out! After seeing Brannons email, community activist Mary Nielson on Saturday emailed Brannons fellow commissioners, County Administrator Greg Kisela and County Attorney Toni Craig, notifying them that she was offended by much of Brannons email. But the final straw for me is the racial slur in this email from a sitting commissioner and from the Chairman of the TDC Advisory Board, Nielson said in her email.[T]his email is an affront to all of us, as citizens, tax payers, bed tax collectors and hosts in our tourism industry, not to mention our visitors and guests, many of whom are people of color, Nielson said in her email. Brannon, who declined to answer questions, responded to the controversy via a faxed statement. The slang phrase referred to is a line from a song by Tupac, an artist that I listen to, the faxed message said. I quoted it like I also quoted Ben Franklin in the same email. That quote Well Done is Better than well said Benjamin Franklin appears to be part of Brannons automatic email signature.Working at 3:15 a.m. in the morning it was at worst a poor choice of a quote, Brannons faxed message continues. Even though it was directed at myself and was not for publication, I apologize if I have offended anyone which was certainly not my intent.Nielson demanded in her email that Brannon resign his seat on the TDC Advisory Council and that he immediately resign from the county commission.Do the good people of Walton County deserve to have any negative branding fall upon us by commissioner Brannons racial slur and the publicity it may provoke? Nielson said in her email. Harris also said Brannon should resign, but only after acknowledging that his actions have embarrassed fellow commissioners and county residents. Efforts to reach individual county commissioners were mostly unsuccessful last Monday. Commissioner Sara Comander did return a call to her office, but only to dispel Nielsons assertion that she was working to convince Brannon to resign.I would never ask another seated commissioner to resign his commission, Comander said. Asked about Brannons email, Comander said, I cant comment in light of everything going on right now. Walton County commissioners will be called to court June 12 to explain why they shouldnt be held in contempt for violating a 2009 judges order regarding management of public records. And attorney Matt Gaetz said he intends to ask the state attorneys office to investigate whether the commissioners, and particularly Commissioner Scott Brannon, so blatantly disregarded the order as to have committed crimes.I have every confidence there will be, there ought to be, a criminal investigation, Gaetz said. Gaetz, who is suing the county on behalf of resident Suzanne Harris, maintains commissioners violated an order that they use only county email accounts to conduct county business. The order was issued in 2009 after commissioners argued against producing public records by claiming those records were scattered across too many accounts to be manageable, Gaetz said. The 2009 order was issued by County Judge David Green, the same judge who ruled Tuesday that a show-cause hearing was warranted to allow Gaetz to produce evidence that violations have occurred. Gaetz said he has stacks of emails he will use to prove that Brannon violated the court order, including one made public Monday in which Brannon emailed Walton County Tourist Development Council Executive Director Dawn Moliterno. In that email, sent from what appeared to be a private email address to Brannons county gmail account address, Brannon discussed county business and closed with the phrase Help a nigga out! The county fully intends to admit emails were sent if the evidence presented by attorneys for the other side show that to be the case.It is what it is, he said. Green said the civil show-cause hearing will answer a fairly simple question in my mind, what did the order say and was it violated. C. Hinson

You're feeling a bit crazed early this week -- but in a good way! You're feeling eager and excited, almost as if you can sense the big, positive changes that are coming your way even though they're not even on the horizon quite yet. You've got to deal with lots of people and should be able to handle them in bunches without any problem. It may take longer than you like, but you have enough time for everyone. Spend the first few days of the week with your most important people. Your need for close ties is strong, and you may need to duck out of work if your obligations aren't too pressing. You turn inward on Thursday and Friday, and should use your amazing energy to either get started on your weekend to-do list or to find some other way to make yourself happy. The weekend is a great time to just hide out and recuperate. You need plenty of social stimulation during the first half of the week, even if you're buried in work. Make sure to surround yourself with good people and try to get plenty of input for any projects you may be trying to complete. Things may be a bit fuzzy at the dawning of the new year, but if you can give as good as you get when it comes to ambiguity, you should be able to make it through to the weekend just fine. It seems as if the people in your life are all trying to top each other with their own brand of freaky behavior. Most of them are just trying to get attention or provoke a response, so you can ignore them. The next couple of days should energize you, and you may want to project yourself out in the world to do some good. Your altruistic side is fully engaged. You've got some great ideas this week, and you may want to tackle the bigger ones first to better align yourself with your goals. On Thursday and Friday, it's too easy to get frustrated with the pace of change in yourself or your family, but try hard to just let things happen for the time being. This weekend does offer a golden opportunity to get people moving at a rate that you can accept, so take the initiative and get going! It may be entirely too easy for you to fly off the handle or otherwise head in the wrong direction, thanks to some pretty intense emotions from down deep. Avoid the small stuff for the next couple of days -- otherwise, you may overlook what seems like a minor detail that ends up having a major impact. That may make you want to rush through things this weekend, but you should do your best to slow down, take things as they come. It might better suit you to mix it up, though, as things are looking a little sketchy right now and you want to feel more solid these days. A lack of clarity at home leads to massive confusion on Thursday and Friday, but it's nothing that signals long-term troubles ahead. Try to just ride this situation out. You should have a blast this weekend doing almost anything that your friends suggest. From Monday through Wednesday, you should try to just accept that people around you are slacking a bit and might be busting out with all sorts of crazy ideas. Thursday and Friday see them even more scattered than usual, but your own energy makes you twice as organized and much better able to clean up their messes (if there are any).

Things You Never Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival. FIRST (Emergency) The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly, this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. SECOND (Locked Keys in Car) Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys In the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Free Directory Service for Cells

April Awareness
In honor of National Sexual Assault Prevention Month (April) I am straying from my normal review of a newly released movie, and digging out some old favorites to get everyone in the mindset of April. This list may step on some toes, but remember, Sexual Abuse is a real thing. No race, religion, or age is exempt from the epidemic; parents take the time to learn the signs and proper education for your kids on this topic. I found these movies from a movie database called listal.com, their movies are tagged so you can virtually find any movie you are looking for with a tag line. I am sure that most of you are familiar with Mystic River, this film is dramatic and highlights the wonderful directors eye of Clint Eastwood. This film keeps you on edge, and is an all-around great dramatic film. The English version of the film, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was just released on DVD, if you love high volumes of action, girl power, and a good mystery, then this film is for you. Both the Foreign and English film adaptations from the best seller book series share the dark image that this story demands. We all love the classic Forrest Gump, we all remember Jennys father, and how she prayed for God to turn her into a bird. This film shows just how long the effects from child abuse can haunt a person. The Breakfast club may not be the first film you think of in this category, but this 1985 classic shows how children can act out, one of the biggest signs that a child is being abused is a drastic change in personality, rebellion and acting out are more common, but a child may also start to act too perfect. Although this is a sci-fi film, Carrie showcases the drastic effects child abuse has on a person. Now there are plenty of children movies that you can use to educate your children on unacceptable ways to be treated. Lemony Snickets: A Series of Unfortunate Events, is about three children whose parents die in a house fire and they are forced to go live with a distant relative, Count Olaf. Matilda is another film that shows unacceptable examples of adult behavior in both a home and school setting. Take this month to get educated and to educate your children on abuse, learn the signs and be aware. If you have any comments or suggestions email be at beckerica2@gmail.com See You All at the Movies!!!
