The Happy Camper

Whats new at Wenonah?

A Special Visit On Tuesday August 7th, Camp Wenonah had a very special guest, Roberta Bondar. Dr. Bondar was the rst Canadian woman in space, and a distinguished neurologist, scientist, author, and photographer. She was also an honours student in Professional Nature Photography at the Brooks Institute of Photography in California. Dr. Bondar wrote the book Passionate Vision, in which she photographed all of Canadas National Parks. She has taken many photographs! This summer, Wenonah is taking the Roberta Bondar Foundations Summer Camp Challenge, the goal of which is to help campers foster an appreciation of nature through photography. Dr. Bondar instructed the Digital Photography PIC on Tuesday. She talked about her experiences and showed campers how to best capture the natural beauty of Wenonah. One digital photographer, Emma Murray, said that Dr. Bondar was very intelligent and taught them a lot about the earth. Dr. Bondar encourages each camper to send in a photo that shows their appreciation for nature through photography. Winners will be chosen by the foundation in mid October.

Super Fantastic Mystery Surprise Day Super Fantastic Mystery Surprise Day was on Monday instead of Wednesday - surprise! The theme was Shrek. First we went around to different stations to compete for onions. Now you might ask, why onions? Well, when we got to wide game there were evil trees and witches and if they caught you, you would be frozen. Somebody would have to hand you an onion then you would be unfrozen. But there were also these little containers of potion you had to nd to stop the bad guys. But if Prince Charming or Lord Farquaad caught you, you would be frozen and have to give them your onion or potion. In the end, camp saved the kingdom of Far Far Away by passing the potion all the way up Driftwood Hill!

Camper Opinions

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are. -Theodore Roosevelt

Cabin Clean-Up I dont think you need to have a competition to make sure the cabin that you sleep in is clean, I think that everyone should keep their cabin clean all the time. For another perspective, I interviewed Gail from the Red Pine cabin. Gail thinks that cabin clean-up is both good and bad. She also said that she wouldnt want to change it and she thinks its good to give something to work for. But she also said it was hard to do well because people might not have the time to clean every day. Tuck I think were lucky for the amount of tuck we get now, but I think we should get it every day. Sugar gives you energy and tastes great. Its not fair that some campers bring their own food plus tuck. If no one was allowed to bring food from home then you could have tuck every day and still have snack. You could also have more healthy choices for tuck. Like sugar-free things or different types of fruit. For example, we could have cherries or oranges but still have some candy on the list. I also talked to Andres, who thinks tuck is awesome. He said he would not want tuck every day and that he would run out of money really quickly. But he does want to add Pringles to the list!
