Review of Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Joint Australian/New Zealand Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any amendments thereto. Full details of all Joint Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazines The Australian Standard and Standards New Zealand, which subscribing members receive, and which give details of new publications, new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards. Suggestions for improvements to Joint Standards, addressed to the head office of either Standards Australia or Standards New Zealand, are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in a Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard should be made without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 92024.

PREFACE
This Standard is issued as a Joint Standard under the terms of the Active Cooperation Agreement between Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand. This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee on Electric Wires and Cables to supersede AS 3166 1976, Approval and test specification for PVC insulated cables for electric signs and high voltage luminous discharge tube installations. The nominal cross-sectional area of the conductor specified is taken from AS 1125 1993, Conductors in insulated electric cables and flexible cords, and is identical with the value recommended in IEC Publication 228:1978, Conductors of insulated cables. This Standard differs from the 1976 edition as follows:

(a) The cable insulation has been changed from V-75 PVC to silicone or ethylene propylene elastomer. Only one conductor size of 1.5 mm2 has been specified. (b) The braided copper screen and non-metallic sheath have been deleted. (c) Cable marking requirements have been altered and Appendix A of the previous edition has been omitted. (d) Tests have been revised. A long-term breakdown test and corresponding new Appendix B, stating the method of test, have been added. (e) Installation requirements have been provided in new Appendix A. In the preparation of this Standard, consideration was given to BS 5055 1991, Elastomer insulated cables for electric signs and high voltage luminous discharge tube installations , and acknowledgment is made of the assistance received from this source.

1 SCOPE This Standard specifies construction, dimensions and tests for single-core flexible cables for operation at voltages up to and including 7.5 kV to earth, used for the wiring of high voltage luminous discharge tube installations. Installation requirements are given in Appendix A.
NOTE: This Standard is intended to apply only to high voltage cables of the types and size which are included. It is not intended, however, that other types or sizes of high voltage cables should be precluded from use, subject to approval by the regulatory authorities.

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this Standard: AS 1125 1429 1660 3000 3178 NZ ECP 5 Conductors in insulated electric cables and flexible cords Polymeric insulated cables for electricity supply at working voltages 1.9/3.3 kV up to and including 19/33 kV Methods of test for electric cables, cords and conductors SAA Wiring Rules Approval and test specification Electric cables Silicone insulated For working voltages up to and including 0.6/1 kV rubber

3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions given in the referenced Standards and those below apply. 3.1 Routine teststests made by the manufacturer on all completed cable to demonstrate the integrity of the cable. 3.2 Special teststests made by the manufacturer on samples of completed cable or components taken from a completed cable, at a special frequency so as to verify that the finished product meets the design specifications. 3.3 Type tests tests made by the manufacturer before supplying on a general commercial basis a type of cable covered by this Standard to demonstrate satisfactory performance characteristics to meet the intended application. These tests are of such a nature that, after they have been made, they need not be repeated unless changes are made to the cable materials or design which might change the performance characteristics. 3.4 Sample tests tests made on samples of completed cable or components taken from completed cable, adequate to verify that the finished product meets the design specification.
