Business raises funds for K-9 team
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Shamong Sun
Nicole Yohnson and Kara Pre-
vost originally began Southern
Scents and Specialties eight
months ago to fundraise for the
K9 unit their dogs are a part of.
The two have since split, but the
business is still going strong and
currently run by Yohnson.
She left the team because of
personal reasons. Shes doing her
own thing. Yohnson said. She
was on the K-9 team with me
when her business took off in her
own way and mine kind of took
off in another.
Yohnson made the business an
LLC and continues to use a dollar
from each sale of her homemade
products to help fund the K-9 unit.
Were not county funded, she
said. People absolutely donate,
we do it on my website or the
team website. Were always look-
ing for donations.
The training and care for the
dogs on the squad is a family proj-
ect.
My husband Tom and I actual-
ly co-founded the team three
years ago, and we didnt want
county funding. We wanted to do
it on our own. All the team mem-
bers help out as much as possi-
ble, Yohnson said.
The funding goes toward edu-
cation, supplies and equipment

Rich Vosler is a seven-year resi-
dent of Shamong, and a widowed
father of nine children. Following
the death of his wife, Joanne, his
struggle with grief led him to tell
his story.
His second book A Beautiful
Love recounts his marriage and
their journey following her diag-
nosis of a rare form of liver can-
cer.
She got sick in 2009, when my
youngest was six weeks old. We
wanted to move back into the
area, Vosler said. Its beautiful
out here. We were in Atlanta for
10 years, then Bergen County, and
finally in New York,
Following the final move to
Shamong and closure on the
house, Joanne lost her battle with
cancer.
After some convincing, a friend
persuaded Vosler to record all his
grief in a journal, which began as
little pieces and eventually
evolved into a book.
I began to put the journals to-
gether and things I was reading,
and it became a book, said
Vosler.
A Beautiful Love follows his
first book, The Voslers Nest: 45
Short Stories of Faith, Hope, and
Encouragement based off inspi-

State Sen. Dawn Marie Ad-
diego, Assemblyman Scott Rud-
der, and Assembly Chris Brown
welcomed the announcement that
the Burlington County Division
of Cultural Affairs and Tourism
will receive a grant for more than
$80,000 through the New Jersey
State Council on the Arts.
In this difficult economic en-
vironment, we are relieved that
this badly needed funding will
flow through the county and on to
worthy organizations in our area.
This funding will help assure that
some deserving art programs will
continue to flourish and provide
cultural entertainment for our
residents, Addiego, Rudder and
Brown said in a joint statement.
In the past, groups that benefit-
ed from the funding included:
Burlington County Footlighters,
the Bridge Players, the Center for
the Arts of Southern New Jersey,
Friends of Medford Cultural
Arts, Mill Race Arts & Preserva-
tion, Whitesbog Preservation

rational emails he would send to
friends and family on a daily
basis.
When you lose someone, you
think about all the good times to-
gether. At least [the book] would
be a great thing for our family to
know about this inspirational
woman, he said.
The book was a substantial
task for Vosler as the project was
put off due to the immense grief
he was experiencing, giving him
time to release his first book. Late
last year, he returned to A Beau-
tiful Love.
If you read this book, the best
value is not so much knowing
this couple but what you can do
when you turn back to your
faith, Vosler said.
Vosler is involved with the
local parish, Church of the Holy
Eucharist located in Tabernacle.
Most recently, he and his children
donated their time to the Pine
Barrens Festival, helping out
wherever it was needed.
Its amazing how you look at
the whole [Pine Barrens Festival]
and see how its run, he said.
Vosler works from home as
sales professional, and as a life
coach helping those in need.
Vosler offers an array of coach-
ing, from small business to spiri-
tual, and previously put it off in
2009 to pursue a full-time job.
Lately, he has gotten back into it,
adding to the work he does from
home.
I also do spiritual direction for
clients and life coaching as well
as business coaching. So with all
those things, Im getting in deep
again, Vosler said. I love being
able to help people and to bring
them along and help them grow. I
keep them on the path.
Were all on a certain path,
he continued. And its about
learning the discipline to stay on
that path.
A Beautiful Love was a closed
chapter, figuratively and literally
for Vosler.
I felt like that chapter was
completed. I felt like my grief
truly came to an end, he said. I
feel at peace.
Voslers life coach edited
A Beautiful Love and saw poten-
tial in a third and final install-
ment.
The story was so magnificent
and at the end of the book, it al-
ludes to a third, Vosler said. But
nothing is written yet.

The Department of Communi-
ty Affairs recently announced
supplemental benefits availabili-
ty through the federally funded
Low Income Home Energy Assis-
tance Program.
Nearly 158,000 households heat-
ing their homes with gas will re-
ceive an added benefit of $100
while those that heat with electric
will receive a $250 benefit.
Approximately 28,000 families
that heat with deliverable fuels,
such as oil or propane, will
receive a $175 supplemental bene-
fit.
About 51,000 households re-
ceiving medically-required cool-
ing assistance will receive a $100
supplemental benefit.
The DCAs Division of Housing
and Community Resources ad-
ministers the LIHEAP program,
which is a federally-funded initia-
tive that helps low-income resi-
dents with their heating and cool-
ing bills, and makes provisions
for emergency heating system
services and emergency fuel as-
sistance.
To be eligible for LIHEAP bene-
fits, a household must be respon-
sible for home heating or cooling
costs, either directly or included
in the rent; and have gross in-
come at or below 200 percent of
the federal poverty level.
The LIHEAP application also
serves as an application for the
Universal Service Fund Program,
which is run by the New Jersey
Board of Public Utilities. USF
helps low-income households pay
for their electric and natural gas
costs. LIHEAP eligible house-
holds may also be eligible to re-
ceive USF assistance.

for the dogs, all personal pets of the team
members, said Yohnson. Its amazing all
the support we get from other team mem-
bers.
The teams headquarters is located in
the Yohnsons home and the team is will-
ing to take in dogs of people who are look-
ing to get rid of their pets, or puppies
looking to be trained. Granted, the dog
must qualify with the type of breed capa-
ble of maintaining the energy of a K9
member. The team doesnt allow pit bulls
or any type of aggressive breed.
They got their dog Patton, 2 years old, a
little over a year ago. They adopted him
from Prevost. Patton and Diesel, 8 years
old, are both the faces of the K-9 unit.
The dogs on the team are like a pack,
and Diesel looks over them. Its great to
see Yohnson said.
The K-9 unit is active in missing person
cases, most recently assisting in finding a
missing boy in Clayton.
The most rewarding part of all this is
finding someone on a search, and seeing
them on the news, Yohnson gushed.
At the shop, the candles are all hand-
poured, 100 percent soy candles, and burn
cleanly. Theyre green and available on-
line for purchase.
With soy you can reuse the jars, Yohn-
son said. All the jars I have [for the can-
dles] you can reuse, the soy is so nice to
use.
Yohnson can produce similar scents to
those of mainstream candles, in addition
to creating candle scents by request. Her
most unique request: vomit for a 21st birth-
day party.
She creates different scents for the dogs
as well, each with a unique scent for the
dog containing a biography of the dog and
are sold for $10 each. The money from
those candles goes directly to the team.
Recently, Yohnson added Hillbilly
Stemware, red cups and mason jars wine
glass-like stems, to her product line.
Were very country and southern like,
and I saw [similar stemware] online and
thought I can totally do that and I started
marketing them and theyve been selling
like hotcakes, she said.
Both products are reusable and the pro-
ceeds support the K-9 squad.
Its great for parties and gifts, people
get them for backyard barbecues, she
said.

ucts can be purchased at local businesses

N
ew Jersey does solar power.
Does it well. Does it too well,
as it turns out.
According to the governors office,
the state installed more solar capacity
in the first quarter of 2012 than any
other state and led the nation in solar
installations on commercial and indus-
trial properties in 2011.
Now, thats a source of pride. Being a
national leader in something other
than reality television shows is a good
thing.
But, as it turns out, you can have too
much of a good thing.
The supply of solar power has now
surpassed the demand, bringing the
market crashing down. And when the
market crashes, solar projects in the
construction phase can stop. Jobs can
be lost. The momentum of the solar in-
dustry can come to a halt.
The measure signed by Gov.
Christie, which had bipartisan sup-
port, aims to boost the market by re-
quiring power companies to purchase
more solar power. In other words, the
state is trying to increase the demand,
hoping that, eventually, it catches up to
the supply, thereby giving those in the
business of building solar projects a
reason to keep doing what theyre
doing.
We think the bill certainly cant
hurt, given the current market situa-
tion, but we also agree with experts
who think more might need to be done.
In a statement, the Mid-Atlantic
Solar Energy Industries Association
points out that the measure doesnt do
enough to prevent a recurrence of the
over-supply situation. It proposes con-
trolling the pace of solar project pro-
duction.
It might be a bit premature to take
that step, but, as the state has seen, this
is a market that, left to its own, can run
itself into the ground fairly quickly.
Give the new measure time to work.
See if the demand can catch up to the
supply. But be ready to step in if it be-
comes clear that more steps are needed
to avoid another crash.
in our opinion
Solar solution
Recent action will help the market, at least in the short term
A super-solar state
New Jersey is a national leader when it
comes to producing solar power. Oddly,
that is now a bad thing. Supply exceeds
demand, and the market has crashed.
A measure signed last month will help
to correct that.
