20 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE You probably already know a lot about the Declaration of Independence, so here are a few lesser-known facts about one of the United States' most important documents. 1. The Declaration of Independence wasn't signed on July 4, 1776. That was the day the wording was approved by the delegates to the Continental Congress. 2. John Adams wrote his wife, Abigail, that July 2, 1776 would be celebrated as Independence Day because that was the day the delegates to Congress voted in favor of independence. 3. The sheet of parchment the Declaration is written on measures 24-1/4 inches by 29-3/4 inches. John Hancock's signature is nearly 5 inches long. 4. Contrary to the movie, National Treasure, there is no map on the back of the Declaration. There is only a notation to label the document for ling. 5. The Declaration is housed in a bullet-proof case and is heavily guarded. When the Archives are closed, the Declaration is moved to an underground vault.
6. By the time the Declaration was written the United States had been at war with Great Britain for over a year. 7. Thomas Jefferson took on the duty of drafting the Declaration, asking John Adams and Benjamin Franklin for corrections. His 'rough draft' is in the Library of Congress. 8. The middle section of the Declaration is a list of grievances the colonies had against King George III or the British Parliament. The British people, on the other hand, were not held to be at fault. 9. The so-called 'fair draft' of the Declaration was sent to the printer on July 4, 1776. It has been lost and was presumed to have been destroyed in the printing process. 10. The rst printing of the Declaration was on the night of July 4, 1776. It was delivered to Congress on July 5. Copies were immediately sent to all of the colonial governments and to Gen. Washington to be read to the troops. 11. Only 26 copies of this rst printing, called the Dunlap broadside for its printer, are known to exist. Most are in government or university libraries and museums.
There was No United States in the Declaration of Independence. It was The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. America actually came into being on March 1, 1781 when the Second Continental Congress ratied the Articles of Confederation.

12. A copy of the Dunlap broadside was found in the British National Archives in Kew, England in 2009. The nd was revealed on July 4. 13. The engrossed or handwritten version of the Declaration that is now in the National Archives was ordered by Congress on July 19, 1776 and was signed by the delegates in attendance on August 2. 14. The Declaration was eventually signed by 56 delegates. About 34 delegates signed on August 2. A few who later signed were not delegates on July 4, 1776 and few who were delegates on July 4 never signed the Declaration. 15. John Hancock, as President of the Congress, signed rst. It was jokingly said later that he wrote so large to make it easier for King George III to read Hancock's signature without his spectacles. 16. The names of the signers, except for John Hancock's, whose name appeared on the Dunlap broadside, were kept secret until January 1777 to keep the signers safe from British reprisals. 17. No one knows the exact whereabouts of the Declaration from its signing until 1800 when the rst federal buildings were completed in the new capital, Washington, D.C. Then it was stored with other important documents in the Treasury building. 18. Since that time, the Declaration has only left the capital twice: the rst when the British attacked Washington during the War of 1812, and the second during World War II from late 1941 until the fall of 1944 when it was stored at Fort Knox.
19. The Declaration arrived at its present location when the National Archives took custody of the document from the Library of Congress in December 1952. 20. The painting by John Trumbull called Declaration of Independence was commissioned by the U.S. Congress in 1817. Although many people think it commemorates the signing of the Declaration, its subject is the presentation of the nal draft of the document to the Congress. A reproduction of the painting appears on the reverse of the two-dollar bill. This was one of the best summers ever! This summer I went to las vegas. Julie and I stayed at Excalibur. We went on a roller coaster called New York, New York. I can't wait to go back. I had a great time. I also got to go to a T.V. singing contest show called Duets! I went with my aunts Mindy and Heidi (Julie's sisters) and cousin, Aidan. We got to see famous singers Kelly Clarkson, Jonh Legend, Robin Thicke, AND Jeniffer Nettels (from the band Sugarland). On the commercials we got to ask them questions. I had a great time and I can't wait to go back again!!!

REFLECTION
This year I wanted to put into context the experience that I had at my grandparents. This is the place where Jason, Brant, and I hunted eld mice and let Sky-Lab eat them. This is the place where we made forts out of the bails of hay. This is the place where I learned how to hunt, sh, and work hard. This is the place where, as a kid, I had the most freedom. There are many wonderful stories that our family has and shared with one another and where many holidays were celebrated. How can I forget the ThanksGiving dinners? Afterwards, I reclined in a chair staring at the TV with one eye open watching the football games dozing in and out of consciousness to the background sound of laughter from family members in the kitchen playing cards while my belly tried to make more room for the families traditional green Jello dish... How could I ever forget that? This is the reason for our trip.
I wanted to share a story of my memories of the ranch. Tracy once published my story that I wrote in the Cuzzette many years ago.
Ever since I was a cute little boy, the times spent at my grandparents house have become some of my happiest memories. I can remember every little detail about their house I can remember the woodshed where wood was stored for the winter. I remember my great grandfathers part of the house, in which my grandfather skinned, cleaned, and plucked the geese and ducks after hunting them. It was an old fashioned kitchen with a wood burning stove. I remember the little shed converted into a room, where my grandmother stored goods and created her artistic pottery. I remember the gardens as being full of lifesustaining vegetables. Each part of the house and even the land around it had many memories for all my family members. Its a place every aunt, uncle, brother, sister, and all cousins in our family will remember.

Its a place where we all shared holidays together, playing on the frozen pond while uffy snowakes danced in the air. My grandparents house is the most distinctive place where I can rest my soul, my family comes together for holidays, and where my mother, aunts, and uncle grew up. This house is memorable to me because of the love expressed to me there. My grand parents house is rst visible when the highway descends from the mountains. The land seems as if its a lost city surrounded by mountains inhabited by trees. Thousands and thousands of acres are visible now. I can see across the crystal blue sky to the other end of the mountainous shore. The yellow grasses are sea waves rippled by the gentle wind. Scoping the sea, I see an island, which is visible from my position. I see a course to land on this island. Getting closer to discovery, my heart pounds with anticipation. Now visible are two barns side by side, as if tied to a dock on the side of the island. The island is a brick red two-story house. There is a gate that surrounds the house protecting a garden from unwanted native, who try to eat them. There are always natives each summer grazing on the sea of grass. I get off my ship with both feet condently planted on the ground as if I were claiming this land with a ag. I stretch out with relief and exhale the last of my tension in my body for the cool breeze to take. I know alls well, and my soul can rest and heal because it will be refueled and bandaged by love here. Once inside the gate I feel that I have entered the Eden as I take an apple from the apple tree of life; knowing that I have no worries now that my journey is over. My grandparents tell me many things about how life was around the house and what my mother, uncle, and aunts used to do while growing up. When I hear these stories, my mind slips back in time, as if I were in a time machine traveling back in
time to observe life then. I can see my mother getting up before the crack of dawn to feed the chickens, sheep, and collect the eggs, before she went to school. After my mother does her chores, she sits at the table for breakfast. I can see my mother sitting down at the table with a warmhearted smile knowing she did her part to contribute to the breakfast. Her bright eyes shine with the reection Where in the USA is Bieber of love that comes from her heart, which is directed to her family. I can smell my grandmas eggs and bacon. She always made her own bread with thick slices to sop up the sunny side egg yolk. A pitcher of milk, refrigerated after my uncle had milked the cow the day before, was on the table as well. The kitchen was warmly lit by the country sun from the windows that run horizontally across the wall and a quarter of the way up from the ground to the ceiling. I can see my mother walking to catch the bus at the end of a long dirt road, with my uncle and aunts. While walking down the red lava paved road, they stirred up dust as if these were memories from the road of their journey. I am watching them leave my sight from the front porch. Then I hear my grandfather bitching and griping about something, while walking off to attend the ranch. I guess history repeats itself more often than I thought.

to hunt duck and geese. There is a need of such thing up there and it could make a prot. I also was encouraged to pursue this idea from the Ryan Wilson and the bar tender that grandpa spent numerous hours with. They both have fond memories of Kenny Holl. However, John told me it would take $100,000 to restore it and it wasnt worth it.
I went over to the McCarthers house to speak to them about what is to come of the ranch. It is now Rods property. He sat down and told me that he will level the land and keep the well for the cattle. This was hard for me to hear and made me frustrated, but what could I do- its his property.. I told him I thought about taking out a business loan to turn it into a bed and breakfast for people that wanted

IN TOWN
I have waited 38 years to nally go into grandpas favorite bar. Every one inside
remembered Ken Holl and missed him. I met Rayan Wilson who found a logging plate while hunting. The plate has both his and my grandfathers name on it dated 1935. Through conversation, it was discovered that the black smith shop that was in town was his grandfathers. This was Kens rst job according to my grandmother. I was touched by the towns kindness and affection for Ken Holl.
I also met a close friend of grandpa when I turned in to ask for the nearest gas station. This use to be the Chevron before headed down the lava road to the ranch. When I pulled up to ask for directions, he and two others were drinking Bud Light. Continued on page 17

Left to Right: Some dude, Dr. Dally, and Mike the mechanic.
Of course being hospitable country folks, they offered me a cold one. I accepted gladly, for the sun was out that day making a bit of a fuss amongst its subjects. I was entertained by the bantering of the two men about Marines (Mike) being this and the Army (Dr. Dally) being that... They used their colorful vocabulary that they learned in service to tease one another. The mechanic, Mike, gave me an old pic of grandpa and Rod McCarther with a 6 point buck antlers. He was one of many that constantly helped sh grandpas car out of many ditches and mud holes. The two of them were really close. When he reected upon the time that has passed since Ken died, he almost teared up. Another man that was there was Dr. Dally. He was the man that took care of grandpa until his last breath. He is a wonderful man with a kind disposition. I was taken back that I met this man and had no questions to ask him. I can think of some now. He also helped grandpa's favorite hunting buddy into medical school and is now practicing
I have not been to the grave site since we buried our grandfather. I dont believe in talking to graves and so forth, but I did. It was a way for me to say my peace and bless them. I was able to share things that were on my heart that I did not get a chance to before. I also wanted to bless the WWII vet. James and my uncle that I never met John Brandt Holl. I have to admit that I gave Charles a piece of my mind... I always wondered why.....
Ken Holl is in the middle and Rod on the right... Im not sure who dude on the left is.

Dear Grandparents, I just want to start of by saying that I am grateful for your love and what you did to get me where I am. I am blessed to have such memories. Grandpa, many miss you and your personality. You brought laughter to many, but your family missed who you were. I too have struggled with similar things as you did. I promised not to let my light go dim from this world. I wonder what your pain was and what was hard to confront in your life. I say this because it is tough being a man in this world. Our masculinity is always challenged and it seems we have to be tougher than what we are to save face. This tends to build a callus around our hearts that doesnt let others in. I know there was another side to you when you looked me in my eyes and said you loved me. I was shocked to hear this, because this is not your typical way of showing it. You are a mans man and there is no one manlier than you in my book. I have a picture of you in the corn eld hanging on my wall over my dresser. It also has along the frame two pictures of you: one when you went to SF to look for work and another when working in the woods. You and I are similar in many ways. I promise to be the best man I can.
I remember many of your stories grandma. You are truly a strong woman for what you had to deal with in your domestic life. I want you to be proud of your children. They turned out wonderful and have strong bond with each other and with God Almighty, Blessed is He... You have wonderful great-great grand-children as well. We are all well educated in your honor. This is a characteristic that we will pass down to our children. I have every birthday card and letter that you sent me to this day. I have married a woman that is tough as nails as you were. I will always honor and cherish her and my family. You are the reason that I value family so much. Your stories and emphasis on family inspires my strong grip on each member. You have taught me that relationships are the most valuable thing we can possess in our lifetime. I want you to know that I am an administrator in education and have dedicated to making a difference in others lives. Love, Dustin Hunter
P.S. I wish we could have kept the ranch in the family, but Ive learned the ranch will always live because the family made the memories that live in my heart.
Psalms 103:15-18 15As for man, his days are like grass; As a ower of the eld, so he ourishes. 16 When the wind has passed over it, it is no more, And its place acknowledges it no longer. 17 But the lovingkindness of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to childrens children, 18 To those who keep His covenant and remember His precepts to do them.
