PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Small Tools. It is one of a
series of three Standards for hand hammers. The other Standards in the series deal with general
requirements for hand hammers and specific requirements for heavy hammers.
In the preparation of this Standard consideration was given to BS 876, Hand hammers, and
acknowledgment is made of the assistance therefrom.

Part 3: Specific requirements for light hammers

1 SCOPE This Standard specifies the requirements for the design, construction, and testing of light
hand hammers intended for striking of wood, metal, concrete, masonry, or stone, and for singlehanded use.
General requirements for hand hammers are specified in AS 3797.1.
Designs and nomenclature of light hand hammers are given in Appendix A.
NOTE: Guidance on the safe use of light hand hammers is given in Appendix B.
2 APPLICATION Light hand hammers shall comply with the applicable requirements of AS 3797.1

NOTE: Light hand hammers of types not specif ically defi ned herein should comply wit h the applicable requir ements of this
Standard and AS 3797.1.

3797.1 Part 1: General requirements
4 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions given in AS 3797 and the one below
apply:
4.1 Nail claw — a curved extension of the head, opposite the striking face, of a carpenter’s claw hammer
designed for the pulling of nails from timber and similar material.
5 MATERIALS Materials for light hand hammers shall comply with AS 3797.1.
6 MANUFACTURING REQUIREMENTS AND HEAT TREATMENT
6.1 Design and construction
6.1.1 General The design and construction of light hand hammers shall comply with AS 3797.1 and
with the specific requirements of Clause 6.1.2 where applicable.
6.1.2 Nail claw The nail claw of a carpenter’s claw hammer shall have a smooth radius, and shall
comply with the performance requirements specified in Clauses 8.4 and 8.5.
6.2 Heat treatment
6.2.1 General The heat treatment of light hand hammers shall comply with AS 3797.1 and with the
requirements of Clause 6.2.2 where applicable.
6.2.2 Nail claws Nail claws shall be hardened and tempered to comply with the performance
requirements specified in Clause 8.5.
7 FINISH
7.1 General The finish of light hand hammers shall comply with AS 3797.1 and the specific
requirements of Clause 7.2 where applicable.
7.2 Nail claws The back of the nail claw of a carpenter’s claw hammer shall have a finished surface
to minimize damage to the work surface when pulling nails.
8 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
8.1 General Light hand hammers shall comply with the performance requirements specified in
AS 3797.1 and with the requirements of Clauses 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5, where applicable.
8.2 Hardness The hardness of the striking surfaces of light hand hammers shall comply with AS 3797.1
except that the hardness of the striking face of a carpenter’s claw hammer shall be not less than
510 HV 30 (50 HRC).
