COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH August 5, 2012 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

SAN DIEGO

Pastors Corner ~
BREAD OF LIFE SERIES - PART 2
From last Sundays gospel, the crowd who has witnessed the multiplication of the bread and fish and the feeding of the multitude now pursue Jesus, not because they believe in Him, but because they want to receive more favors from him. So Jesus reminded them, Do not work for food that perishes but for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. This saying of Jesus compels us to check our inner motives in our prayer and in attending Mass. What do we pray for? Why do we attend mass? Some people come to Mass to ask favors: healing for the sick, a job for the unemployed, material blessings, solutions to problems and other answers to human needs. While these things are good, God wants us to be more mature and deep in our way of dealing with Him. Seeking the Lord in prayer is not just about obtaining answers to our needs. Prayer and the Holy Mass should be our way of expressing oneness with Him in faith and love. He wants us to ask for the grace to do the work of God, to believe in Jesus and commit our entire life to Him. It is our salvation that is the main reason why Jesus demands that we have faith in God and in Him. The crowd recalled when God rained down from heaven manna in the desert during the time of Moses. That experience points to a greater reality that it is God who feeds His people, not Moses. In the same way, the multiplication of the bread sends a deeper message that Jesus will give food that is not only for physical satisfaction but also for obtaining eternal life. So every time we attend Mass, we should not just be concerned about our earthly needs but more for our salvation. As we say, We become what we eat. So in receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, we should become like Him in holiness so as to deserve to enter His heavenly home.
