it and the revelation becomes deeper and more established within us.

Thats what separates those with a deeper revelation from those who have less, and those who are able to make the scriptures work for them from those who arent. Most of us have busy lives and it may seem a tall order to meditate on the word of God to such an extent. However, we should realise that when God told Joshua to meditate on the book of the Law day and night, he had just appointed him leader of three million Israelites. Joshua was an extremely busy man! So how was it that he was able to meditate on the Word day and night? Well, the answer is that we all can meditate on the Word while doing other things. In the midst of very busy lives most of us manage effortlessly to worry about the things which trouble us and in the same way as we keep those worries active in the back of our mind, we can keep chewing over the Word of God in the back of our mind, too. We can think about it while we are doing housework, going shopping or just going for a walk continually letting our mind go back to the Word of God. Even when we are focussing on our work, our subconscious mind can be thinking about what the Lord has been showing us. As we do that, more and more revelation about the scripture were meditating on, will come into our mind. We can meditate on Gods Word all day, no matter what our duties and responsibilities are. It wont hamper our effectiveness it will increase it. As we keep our mind on those promises of God which promise victory in the areas where we are having most problems, (rather than thinking about the problems themselves) well gain more and more revelation and understanding and see our needs

met. Then we will find we are having good success and prospering in the very areas where we were failing. Conversely, if we allow ourselves to meditate simply on our problem and all the reasons it looks impossible to solve, we will begin to believe that its bigger than God, because whatever we meditate on, we magnify. So by meditating, we can either magnify the problem or magnify the Lord!9 Of course, meditating doesnt actually increase the size of the problem or the Lord, but when we meditate on the Lord we see Him as bigger and greater than all our problems and the problems will shrink by comparison. It comes down to this when we have a problem, we also have a choice. We can meditate on the problem or we can meditate on the Word. Meditating on the Word brings the solution, for if we keep our mind stayed on the promises of God, and believe that nothing is too difficult for Him,10 Hell show us the way forward11 and give us perfect peace.12 So what are you going to think about in future? Your answer to that question will decide your future to a large extent.2 In many ways, our life is lived between our ears, for its here where thoughts are pondered and lifes decisions made. Whether you think on the world or the Word will determine whether you are carnally minded or spiritually minded and the decisions you make and the paths you take. If you choose to meditate on the Word it will be a lamp to your feet and a light to your path.13 That is the choice you should make.

MEDITATION ON THE WORD

Meditation is very important in the Christian life. There are many scriptures that tell us to meditate and there are huge benefits to be gained from it, but many Christians have been dissuaded from meditating because of its association with Eastern religions. However, the meditation God wants us to engage in, doesnt involve sitting on the floor with our legs crossed and chanting or emptying our minds of everything. In fact its just the opposite. Godly meditation involves filling our minds with the things of God, focusing our attention on a given subject and giving ourselves to it completely.1 Meditation is a transforming mechanism. How it transforms us depends on what we meditate upon.2 If we meditate on the things of the world, we will become worldly. If we meditate on Gods Word, our minds will be renewed in godly knowledge, understanding and wisdom and as we put that into practice, our lives will change completely.3 In fact after were born again, its we who determine whether our hearts and minds are changed and renewed by meditating on the Word of God, or whether we stay worldly (carnal) by thinking about worldly things.4 What we spend our time thinking about determines what we become. In the Bible the Hebrew word haga, which is usually translated as meditate is sometimes translated as imagine and to meditate, we need to use our imagination. Meditation involves taking the words of scripture and pondering them until they

create a picture in our imagination. Then the picture we see on the inside, will dictate what happens on the outside.2 Gods will is that we should meditate on His Word. If we do that, speak it forth and put it into practice, God promises success and prosperity. It will happen as surely as night follows day! Lets look at what God said to Joshua.5 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. The Book of the Law that Joshua had was the first five books of our Bible. Today we have the complete Bible, so we can say that the entire Bible is Gods Word and that it shall not depart out of our mouths. The Lord instructed Joshua to speak the Word of God and meditate on it day and night. Reading the Word was never mentioned! Of course, we cant speak or meditate on what we have never read, but many people stop at the mere reading of Gods Word, thinking that it will produce everything they need. Thats not the promise of these verses. Meditation is not the same as reading. Meditation is taking a truth that we read in Scripture and thinking about it over and over again until we see its fulfilment or truth in our imaginations. Then, as we think in our heart and speak forth Gods Word in faith, thats what we will have.2 However, for that to occur, we have to be so strong in our convictions of what we have spoken and meditated upon that it also fuels action on our part. As James tells us, Faith without works is dead.6 and when weve meditated on the word and

spoken it forth in faith, we need to go forward and follow through with action! Its only when we have meditated, spoken, and acted on Gods Word, that we will make our way prosperous, and have good success5. Whilst everyone would like to have the prosperity and success that this verse promises, few are willing enough or dedicated enough to do what is necessary to get these results. The bottom line is, if we arent getting them, we arent doing what these verses say. Meditation takes effort! To reap the benefits of meditating on the word we need to be doing it consistently. We can receive an intellectual knowledge of the truth simply by reading the Bible and many people have done that. They have heard biblical truths and can recall them, but they dont dwell upon them to such a degree that those truths change their attitudes. They may, for instance, know that it is Gods will to prosper them financially, but if they dont start seeing themselves with their needs met, then their attitude hasnt changed and a poverty attitude will cause them to stay poor even though they know God wants them to prosper. Its also true that the deep things of God arent always apparent at first glance. To get full understanding, we have to give a great deal of thought to the scriptures.7 For a permanent transformation of our mind to take place, we have to meditate on the truths of Gods word until our outlook, feelings, sentiments, dispositions and perspectives have all been renewed to Gods way of thinking and we are truly changed. We dont get all the revelation of any truth all at once, and like a cow repeatedly chewing the cud8 we have to meditate on it over and over again. Each time we do, we get more from
7. 2 timothy 2:15, 3:14-17 8. the word ruminate which means meditate comes from the way a cow chews its food which then goes into its rumen (stomach) and then is returned to its mouth as cud to be chewed over again!
