Lesson Topic: Summarizing and Context Clues Length of lesson: 20 minutes

Grade level: 4th Grade

Curricular Context / Overview: This lesson will be completed in a small guided reading group. The purpose of this lesson is to continue working on reading comprehension skills through summarizing and context clues.

Stage 1 Desired Results Goals/Content Standard(s): RI.4.2. Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text. RI.4.4. Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.

Understanding (s)/goals Interpret text for meaning

Essential Question(s): Why do we summarize what we read? How can summarizing help you become a better read?

Students will know definition of summary defintion of vocabulary words summarize a paragraph in one sentence use context clues to define vocabulary and unknown words

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task(s): (Grasps) Goal: The students will be able to summarize key events throughout the text and use context clues to define vocabulary. Role: The students will be storytellers, summing up what they read. Audience: Small guided reading group

Other Evidence:

Situation: The students will be summarizing each paragraph in chapter one of the reading. Product: The students will summarize each paragraph in the chapter, by writing a sentence for each paragraph. Standard for Success: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to summarize a paragraph with one sentence. They will complete an exit slip at the end of the lesson to demonstrate this understanding.

Stage 3 Learning Plan Learning Activities: Gagne 1-Gain Attention: Use a map to gain students attention. Ask for a volunteer to find Washington state on the map. Tell them this is where they story they will be reading takes place. 2- Inform learners of the objective: After gaining attention, let the students know they will be working on summarizing. 3- Simulating recall of prior learning : Students will predict what they think the story is about. This will require them to recall and prior knowledge they know about rain forests and Washington. 4- Presenting the stimulus: After reading the first paragraph of the story, tell students you will be summarizing the paragraph. Read a summary of the paragraph in one sentence. 5- Providing learning guidance: Model for students another paragraph, by narrating how you would summarize. Then allow the students to write out a summary of the next paragraph as a group. 6- Eliciting Performance: Individually,

students will summarize the next paragraph on their own. 7- Providing feedback: As a group, have each student read their summary. Talk about what each summary includes, and what makes each summary valuable. 8- Assessing performance: Students will complete and exit slip, but reading the first paragraph of the next chapter. They will write a one sentence summary on a piece of paper before leaving the guided reading table. 9- Enhancing retention and transfer: Before students leave, ask them to continue practicing summarizing during free reading and while at home.

Differentiation Techniques: I will use modeling and narrating of summarizing to help students become more clear on the skill. I will also have directions written as well as orally explain them, to cater to different learning styles.
