Teenage Psychology Theory

Introduction Now days, we always hear over the TV and Radio about adolescences or children who are below 18 years of age committing crime. Since they are minors they are being called conflict with the law. In addition adolescents struggle with issues of independence and self-identity. There may be experimentation with drugs and alcohol or sexuality. Peer groups and external appearance tend to increase in importance. Although teens are typically healthier than either children or adults, they wind up in the hospital a lot. They crash cars because they're drunk or driving too fast. They shoot each other. They take foolish risks texting and riding bicycles. They get pregnant because they have unprotected sex with condoms in their pockets. Teens do dumb things but they are not stupid .
Adolescents are AWARE of risks. If anything happens they are more aware of risk than adults

(probably because parents keep warning them about danger) and overestimate the negative consequences of their actions.

Parenting style

The teenage years are often portrayed as stressful for both parents and teens. Many researches demonstrate that teens undergo a number of developmental adjustments including biological, cognitive, emotional and social changes on their way to becoming adults. Parenting effectively during the teen years, as in any developmental period, requires a thorough understanding of these normative developmental changes. Parents can benefit from an understanding that how they parent, or their parenting style, provides a basis for many healthy developmental outcomes during adolescence. Although being a parent is not easy its their responsibility to raise their child. Parents should be a good model to their children. For an instance, youre a smoker, you have vices and irresponsible Father then when youre wondering that when your son grew up he is not performing well in school, and He is always with his pals, being addicted to computer games and start smoking too. When you start to Discipline your son, you had a confrontation and he blamed you. Thats an example on why parent should be a

good model to their children. For Children thinks that what their parents do is right. Responsiveness and unresponsiveness are measured by the attention that parents pay to the needs, wants, and emotions of the child. A parent that takes a keen interest in what the child expresses to them is responsive. On the flip side, parents that dismiss a childs need for attention are considered unresponsive.

Demanding parents set high expectations for their children, and attempt to guide or even force them to follow the parents sets of rules and tell their children when they are not living up to those expectations. Undemanding parents, on the other hand, will often let their children do whatever they want without much guidance or even care for what theyre doing.

According to Diana Baumrind there are Four Basic Elements Combine to Create Four Primary Parenting Styles these are: Authoritative parenting styles

A parent who implements the authoritative parenting style combines the basic elements of being demanding and responsive.

Experts consider this to be the most effective form of parenting. The parent considers the childs feelings and problems above all else, and guides their child to make their own choices and solve their own problems. They do this in a way that lays out boundaries for their child, but allows their child much freedom and independence to create their own path in life.

The authoritative parent will expect a certain level of maturity and age-appropriate behavior from their children. If a child steps outside of these expectations, the parent will discuss the problem with the child and let the child know what theyve done wrong. Typically, the parent will not punish the child.

As stated above, experts believe the authoritative style is the best of the parenting styles to adopt. Children tend to develop higher self-esteem and independence, and this will carry over into their adult life. We will revisit this parenting style later in this article.

Authoritarian parenting styles

Parents who adopt this parenting style are demanding of their children, but not particularly responsive to their childrens needs and concerns.

These parents have high expectations for their children to conform to a rigid set of rules of behavior. When their children violate these rules, the parents are extremely strict and punish the children, most often without any discussion. Generally, the parents wont listen to or try to understand their childs point of view.

The authoritarian parent likes to remain firmly in control and rarely lets their children make his or her own decisions. Children raised under this kind of control often have less social ability. They are also more likely to experience a nervous breakdown, become runaways, or otherwise rebel against their parents.

Indulgent parenting styles

This type of parent is responsive to the emotions of their child but is not demanding.

Indulgent parents are exceedingly lenient and do not set behavioral expectations. Their children often become spoiled brats, as they most often get what they want. If their parents always give them whatever they want, they will expect others to do the same. Because of this, they can become impulsive and in their teen years even reckless. They are more likely to become drug users and thrill seekers.

Neglectful parenting styles

A parent who is neglectful is neither demanding nor responsive.

The worst of the four primary parenting styles, neglectful parenting sees a parent who doesnt pay any attention to their children. At the same time, this parent will let their children do whatever they want without any guidelines to follow.

These parents dont show much affection for their children and are not involved with their childs life. They dont take their childs emotions and wants into account, and the child usually feels unwanted. Often, children with this type of parents will force themselves to become independent, as they cannot depend upon their parents.

This has a substantial impact later in life: they may have considerable difficulty with social situations and become delinquents.

II.

Family Style

Broken Family is mostly the reason why adolescence intends to be rebellious. There is no parent to love and guide them. Family background and context of a child affect his/ her reaction to life situations and his level of performance. Although, the school is responsible for the experiences that make up the individuals life during school periods, yet parents and the individuals experiences at home play tremendous roles in building the personality of the child and making the child what he is.

A. Single parenting The Single parent is busy working for the livelihood of the family thus, He / She do not meet or give time to his/ her children B. Adopting Style It is very visible that when parents separate and have another family with them. They forgetting that they have kids left alone. They just let their kids be adopted by their relatives C. Season style There is a type of parent that let his / her child stay for a period and let his / her child move to hi/ her another parent for example Charlie Swan and Renee of Twilight

III. Disciplining Methods To discipline child is a tough job for parents but disciplining much harder makes something wrong about the child. Here are some methods that parent usually do: A. Close fisted method - parents use physical contact to punish their child, for them; using their heavy fist ( spanking, punching), or by materials (belt, stick or any hard materials) will teach their child to be disciplined Although common method used by parents; this method is not advisable this bring so much effect to the growth and maturity of the child thus, this may be the reason why teenagers are violent and wild. B. Wordy method Parents are usually called armalites especially the mothers because they are the ones who always give reprimands. Parents often tell their experience about their past which can help their kids reflect upon. Opposite parents do the other way. They utter words that should not be told that can demoralized and can cause the downfall of their kids
IV. Peers pressure/ Groups

Teens are not babies anymore they are more on peer attention seekers. For them teen can understand them, they have same situations and dilemmas. They are just complete when they with their friends. They also consider their friends family as well. But sometimes teen does not make all good choices / selection of good set friends. They just friend a person because they want to be named in school or just for kakampi in times of trouble.

V. Emotional and Social incompetencies and insecurities

Some emotional and behavioral Disorders that causes Teenage conflicts:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Panic disorder Bulimia nervosa anorexia nervosa Obsessive-compulsive disorder hyperactivity disorder Adjustment disorder Narcissistic personality Hypochondriasis

VI. Abused Now days can hear news about teens that are being abused whether physically, emotionally and socially. Although some undergoes therapy like counseling that thought of being abused cannot be removed in the memory unless amnesia will happen to the victim. Teens lose their self worth, dignity and morality when their life is being stepped on or being degraded.
