Owen Roe Expands into Washington State
It’s not an unfamiliar sight to see Oregon winemaker David
O’Reilly driving around the hills surrounding the Yakima Valley in
his high-mileage Ford Explorer, scouting out vineyards and
vineyard locations for possible fruit sources. O’Reilly is expanding
his winery operations in Washington State, and his number one
goal is to locate the best vineyards for wine production.
The winemaker who co-founded Sineann Winery and is the co-
owner and winemaker for Owen Roe Winery in Newberg, Ore, will
be introducing new wines and bringing a new Washington winery
to the market.
O’Reilly’s new winery location is not a pretty sight at first, but the
potential to restore the old dairy office and five acres of storage
tanks and outbuildings is huge. Prior to the purchase, the location
was the site for Apex Cellars and Washington Hills winery.
O’Reilly is restoring and cleaning up the compound to build a
high-end, custom crush facility and a new winery, temporarily
named Cream Winery of Yakima.
The winery will produce quart-sized milk containers, filled with
wine and only for sale at the winery and in limited restaurants.
The containers will be recyclable—a constant thread throughout
all of O’Reilly’s endeavors. He is also creating several new labels
for value-priced wines—Mirth (Chardonnay) and Lenore (Syrah,
named after the Edgar Allen Poe poem) and another red wine
blend, all produced at the Sunnyside facility with Yakima Valley

2007. Tyson's trained "on the job" at Erath,

his first vintage, 2005, made a Pinot noir. The
2006 vintage wines are a Chardonnay and a

This is incredible Pinot. Hands down one

of the top 20 Oregon Pinots of the 2006

note, providing freshness to the ideally
ripe fruit. Grace and power merge in the

from the Mineral Springs estate, this wine
offers an impressive combination of power
and purity. Its ruby-red hue previews a
nose of wild strawberry and cranberry
while the palate shows bing cherry, red plum, clove and sandalwood with
an undercurrent of black fruits reminiscent of marionberry and crushed
blackberry. Layer upon layer of depth and complexity are revealed in a
velvety texture and lingering finish. The wine tells the story of the vintage
as well as the vineyard, delivering a core of varietally correct Pinot Noir
fruit characteristics coupled with a unique personality that can only come
from Mineral Springs".

Mineral Springs is a 32-acre vineyard, planted in 2002 on an east- west

ridge just east of Carlton. The soils, derived from fractured siltstone and
sandstone, are ancient marine sediments that drain well and are thus
perfectly suited to viticulture. The vineyard sits just under 400 feet and
faces south and southwest on a highly uniform and gentle slope. We
think this is a perfect spot for Pinot Noir.

In 2006, Mineral Springs was harvested under clear skies during the
very last days of September. A warm, dry growing season and
meticulous vineyard management contributed to the desired yield of 2.0
tons per acre. Resulting fruit was packed with flavor and lush with
ripeness. All of these grapes were farmed without pesticides or residual
herbicides and certified as sustainable by Oregon’s L.I.V.E program.oast
and baking spice aromas, highlighting copious dark fruit elements,
suggestive of Oregon blackberries and blueberries, with lively top notes

Sauvignon 06 opens with aromas of
caramel-inflected rich, dark cherries, ground
cinnamon, and barrel toast that usher in a
concentrated palate of plush, dark currants,
black cherries, and blackberries. Savory
notes of vanilla bean, barrel spice, dried
sage leaf and mint come together with
sappy fruit, fine tannin, and Dubrul Vineyard
earthiness on the finish, exuding power.

Best to cellar this for another couple years, then drink over the next decade.

Fidelitas

Bordeaux Expert
is Charlie Hoppes
Charlie Hoppes counts on faith,
loyalty and a family name to
carry his Fidelitas Bordeaux
style red wines to fame.
Fidelitas is the Latin word for fidelis—meaning faithful, loyal and true.
It also happens to be a version of his wife’s family name—Fidelas.
The name has been in Terry Hoppes family for six generations.
Hoppes (pronounced hop-pas) uses the name as a mission
statement. He is faithful to producing Bordeaux-style blends, true to
traditional winemaking and loyal to the terroir of the Columbia Valley.
“That says it all for me,” Hoppes said. “It says so much, and it is still a
family name”.

From Consultant to his own Winery:
Hoppes began his adult career as a test engineer for Boeing in
Seattle. But he wanted more creative work, and began exploring
winemaking after making wine in the basement of his in-laws house in
Pasco.
In 1984, Hoppes applied to the University of California at Davis. He
quit Boeing in 1985 and began life as a full-time student in Northern
California. After three years, he had a degree in viticulture and
enology. His wife Terry supported him while he studied and Hoppes
worked on campus to bring in a little money.
Mike Januik hired Hoppes in 1988 while he was making wines for
Snoqualmie Winery. Stimson-Lane purchased the winery a few years
later and Januik brought Hoppes with him to Chateau Ste Michelle.
In 1993, Stimson-Lane opened its red wine facility at Canoe Ridge
near Patterson, WA, not far from Columbia Crest Winery in Eastern
Washington. Hoppes moved his growing family (by then he had two
girls) to the area.

Although Hoppes said he was happy with his work, and the
learning opportunities, the idea of working in a large
company was still unappealing and he longed to work for a
small label. His goal was produced wines under his own
label.
“Anyway you looked at it, it was corporate winemaking and
I wasn’t enjoying it anymore,” Hoppes said. “I also wasn’t
THE winemaker—just one of many.”
Charlie Hoppes released his first wines under his own
Fidelitas label in 2003. from 300 cases, his winery has
grown to over 5000 cases per vintage.
Winemaking
Charlie Hoppes has something that can’t be taught in the
wine industry—a gut instinct that nudges him when grapes
are ready to pick, alerts him when he reaches the “ah-ha”
point of blending wines and intuitively informs him what a
wine will taste like a year or two down the road in the bottle.
“Great wines begin in the vineyards,” Hoppes said. “That’s
the best beginning a winemaker can have. After that, it is a
combination of being patient and letting the fruit hang as
long as you can—and knowing when to pick. Lots of people
let it hang too long. There is a balance and a gut feeling of
knowing, after tasting, when you’ve got it right.”

Matello Pinot noir 06 $22
Matello Pinot noir is produced by one of the smallest
wineries in Oregon, the Mad Wines Company,
producing four Pinot Noirs and a Pinot noir rose.
Total production hovers around 500 cases per
vintage. Owner and winemaker Marcus Goodfellow
is a star of the “indie” wine set in Portland, well-
known among Portland's "foodies".
Goodfellow has developed his winemaking skill
through working closely with Amy Wesserman and
David Autrey of Winery. Matello sources fruit from
several locations in the Willamette Valley, but in
particular from one vineyard, Whistling Ridge in the
Ribbon Ridge AVA, which lies directly above Beaux
Freres Vineyards.
Marcus’ philosophy in winemaking is to let it be. That
is a goal to allow the natural beauty of the fruit to be
center stage and build up a perfectly balanced wine
around it without manipulation. As such, Matello
does not inoculate their fermentation with yeast, and
they use little new oak for aging to add texture,
without overwhelming the wines. This all makes for
more interesting wines, even if it is a little more
risky!
Purple Hands Red 07 $19
Purple Hands Red Wine 07 is a rollicking, fun red
wine full of juicy and approachable flavors and
scents from young newcomers Cody Wright and
Matt Giannone. An unconventional blend of 85%
Merlot, 10% Pinot noir, and 5% Cabernet Franc.
Purple Hands is about connecting with the grape
and its environment. It's about handcrafted wine,
handpicked grapes, hand work as the wine is made,
and a hands-on relationship to the vineyard, the
vine, and the wine. The partners tell of their deep
awareness of the environment in which the grapes
are grown, and of the way their relationship to the
wine grows in the process of picking and sorting the
grapes, of handling, pressing, and working with the
pressed grapes and juice during fermentation, and
in choosing the blend and completing the process
with bottling and labels.

Celebration is a slurp-able crowd pleaser. Bring it out for football games and pair
with a great burger (and don't forget Mark's fries!). I don't usually think of wine
for tailgating, but Celebration converted even dedicated beer drinkers. (They
drank it from mugs).
Like Beaujolais, it shares the quality of tasting great when chilled. It cut through
the smoky fat of a T-bone, and even paired well with pulled pork sandwiches.
You might think of Gamay noir as a summer wine. Don't limit yourself. Celebrate
with Celebration this holiday season.
Famous British wine expert Jancis Robinson, OBE, Master of Wine (MW), and
editor of the Oxford Companion to Wine, describes Celebration: "Very fresh
Gamay nose with lovely pure fruit underneath. Again lots of acidity, like the
Chardonnay, with a dry finish. Crunchy crisp. Seriously appetising. This would
make a great summer drink and is yet another non-French Gamay that
encourages us to look at Beaujolais again..."
Cowhorn Viognier 07 $21
An intense scent reminiscent of a very good Condrieu made me quite excited
when I first tried this Viognier. I’m a lover of the Viognier of the tiny French wine
appellation of Condrieu, where the best Viogniers in the world are made. The
Cowhorn Viognier is the closest to Condrieu I’ve found outside France.
This is a real Viognier, with the intense floral and pear scents that mark the best
examples of the varietal. The wine shows a glorious mid-palate of minerals,
white peach and citrus. The finish is refreshing and uplifting, with just about
perfect acid-fruit balance. Made from 3 year old vines, the Cowhorn Viognier is
one exciting wine. It says all kinds of great things about the winemaker and the
vineyard. - Jean Yates
Cowhorn Vineyard is planted with five varieties: Syrah, Grenache, Viognier,
Roussanne and Marsanne. In their first harvest, 2007 they released this
outstanding Viognier and a Marsanne. The winery is “committed to the holistic,
ecologically sustainable principles on which our biodynamic farm is based”.
Cowhorn winemaker Linda Sue Donovan is a 14-year veteran of the wine
industry with a degree in Fermentation Science (Enology and Viticulture
emphasis) from the University of California, Davis. Linda has assisted in the
production of highly prized wines from Flowers Vineyard, Pierro Vineyard
(Western Australia), Beaulieu Vineyard, and Schramsberg Vineyard.
