Background
The GMO Laboratory in the Department of Chemistry (DOC) was designated as the ASEAN Reference Laboratory for GMO testing in 2004 by the European Union under the EC-ASEAN Economic Cooperation Programme on Standards, Quality & Conformity Assessment; and also the Regional Training Centre for GMF Testing by Special Senior Official Meeting of the 30th Meeting of The ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry (Special SOM-30th AMAF) on 10th August 2009. Within the framework of the Regional Training Centre for GMO Testing, the DOC in collaboration with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) will organize two training programmes on GMO testing in Malaysia. The training programmes which will run concurrently are as follows: 1. Basic GMO detection course 2. Method validation & measurement uncertainty (MU) course The programmes will be held on 10th 14th October 2011, from 8.30am-6.00pm (Friday until 1.00pm). Interested participants are advised to choose only one course based on their experience and technical competency in GMO testing. Selection of participants will be on first-come-first-serve basis. Participants will not be allowed to switch course during training. Training will be conducted in English.

Training Programme 1
Basic GMO Testing Course Tentative course content 1. Sampling and selection of analytical sample (theoretical) 2. DNA extraction (different matrices) (hands-on) 3. Evaluation of DNA quality (hands-on) 4. Introduction to normal and real-time PCR (theoretical) 5. Normal PCR (hands-on) 6. Agarose gel electrophoresis (hands-on) 7. Qualitative real-time PCR (hands-on) 8. Introduction to quantitative real-time PCR (theoretical) 9. Quantitative real-time PCR (hands-on according to availabilities). Training objective At the end of the training, participants will be able to: Learn molecular detection techniques for GMO testing Identify the fundamental r e q u i r e m e n t s f o r G M O t e s t i n g Help their control laboratories properly implement facilities & expertise Promote the use of validated & harmonized methods for GMO analysis Disseminate the knowledge within their institution

Trainers
Dr. Etienne Jaccaud and Dr. Geoffrey Cottenet Nestle Research Centre (NRC), Lausanne Switzerland. Assisted by experts from DOC and MARDI

Accommodation
Participants will need to make own arrangement for hotel and airport transfer. Three hotels which are all within walking distance from the DOC are suggested.

Fees
The training programmes are provided free of charge. However, participants will need to bear the cost for traveling, lodging and after-training meals. No daily allowance is provided.

Application
The completed registration form (form may be downloaded from the website below) should be e-mailed to gmo_pj@kimia.gov.my and bio1_pj@kimia.gov.my before 12th July 2011. The DOC will inform the successful candidates shortly after the submission deadline.
