In view of the growing number of factors with a disturbing influence on power systems and the ever increasing sensitivity of devices and installations on the consumer side, simple monitoring criteria such as undervoltage or overcurrent are no longer adequate. Reliable registration of all the relevant processes within the electrical power system calls for constant observation of a wide variety of derived parameters, such as individual harmonic content, system unbalance and interharmonics, and the swift identification of even slight deviations from the norm. Modern power system monitoring equipment should be capable of comprehensively logging the mode of operation and the interaction of all the component parts of a power supply system. Only comprehensive and continuous monitoring of the entire power system enables all resources to be used purposively and effectively for the restoration of system operation should a disturbance occur. The recorded data can also be used as the basis for extending power networks and optimising primary and secondary technology. Not only the security of supply, but also the quality of electrical power is important for the smooth operation of electrical equipment in industrial, medical and electronic data processing environments. Because of this, power quality is increasingly being brought into play as a price criterion. So it is imperative for energy providers and customers alike to monitor and log power quality constantly. The need to record a very large number of electrical parameters simultaneously and continuously over sometimes very long periods of time places extreme demands on measuring equipment.

Innovation, growth and dependability are the principles which drive the day-to-day activities of the KoCoS team and govern the development, manufacture and marketing of KoCoS products. Not without reason have KoCoS technologies won a number of prestigious awards. What began as a small business developing load optimisation software solutions for municipal utilities is now a medium-sized group of companies providing highly innovative, quality products for electrical power companies and industrial concerns across the world. We are proud of what we have achieved and look forward to consolidating and building on that success in the future. Our thanks go to our customers, employees and partners for their continued confidence in us.
Product overview
Event recording
Event recording provides information on the time, level and duration of limit value violations and a classification of events to EN 50160, for example. If required, the event signatures can also be recorded with a time resolution of half a period. To keep memory requirements to a minimum, the sample rate can also be controlled dynamically. Fast signal changes are recorded with a higher resolution than slow signal changes.

Time synchronisation
Power quality analysis and fault analysis with full area coverage call for precise time synchronisation. Only when measured values are recorded by a number of devices absolutely simultaneously, is it possible to compare them with one another and evaluate them correctly. This makes it possible to identify weak points in the supply system and remedy them efficiently. EPPE and SHERLOG systems can be synchronised with GPS, DCF 77 and NTP and for seconds or minutes pulses, so all common time synchronisation methods are available. Using the KoCoS synchronisation bus, any number of devices can be synchronised using a simple 2-wire connection. This leads to significant cost savings as only one measuring device per location needs to be synchronised against a precise time basis. This master system then synchronises all the other KoCoS measuring systems.

Energy meter
EPPE C8 features an integrated energy meter with an accuracy class of <0.2 which can be used to further optimise energy consumption. The energy consumption of installations can be monitored online and trend analysis can be carried out over long periods. Active, reactive and apparent energy can be recorded and analysed extremely precisely.

Data memory
With 2 GB of flash memory, the EPPE C8 power quality analyser stands out from the crowd. This large memory capacity allows measurement quantities to be recorded at very high resolutions for long periods of time, even when there is no permanent data connection to a mass data storage medium (server). Another advantage of the flash data memory is that measurement data is not lost during interruptions to the power supply or when the device is switched off - the data is completely safe, even without additional battery support.

Fields of application
SHERLOG systems are used in all the parts of an electricity supply network, from power generation and transmission right on through to the end user. They are suitable for all voltage levels.
Examples of applications:
n
Fault recorders for power stations, transformer substations and transmission networks at low, medium, high and extra-high voltage levels. Two simultaneous sampling frequencies of between 100 Hz and 30 kHz can record even extremely short events with precision and allow comprehensive analysis as well as fault location Capture of slow events such as power swings and transient phenomena. Continuous recording of all power system parameters with up to 8 simultaneous density levels for applications such as:
Power quality recording to EN50160, for example Load and frequency recording Analysis of power consumption Assessment of the capacity utilisation and stability of supply systems Capture of influences resulting from a constantly fluctuating generator and load structure Monitoring of general or individually agreed connection conditions for compliance with limit values
n
Documentation system for commissioning and service tests Chronological event recording and logging of binary status signals. Individually definable event classes, message texts and acknowledgement requirements make SHERLOG a fully fledged sequence-of-event recorder.
Because SHERLOG fault recorders contain no parts which are subject to wear and tear, such as hard disk memory or fans, they are 100% maintenance-free. Galvanic separation of all measurement inputs and communication interfaces for maximum flexibility and safe operation. Measurement data is saved reliably in the internal data memory and is not lost in the event of a power failure or when the device is switched off.

Trigger criteria can be set independently of protection relays and are much more comprehensive, so that even very slight anomalies in the supply system can be recorded High sample rate for detecting transient faults, malfunctioning transducers, defective switching contacts or resonance phenomena Recordings include information on all the component parts of an installation and their impact chain By recording data continuously in order to monitor power system operation comprehensively, proof of how a power system is operating can be provided at any time, even if no disturbances are detected during the period in question.

Power supply
The standard SHERLOG delivery package includes a wide-range power supply unit for flexible powering. Alternatively, SHERLOG can also be equipped with DC power supply units. Wide-range power supply unit (85 to 265 VAC / 90 to 350 VDC) Optional power supply units (9 to 18 VDC, 18 to 36 VDC, 36 to 72 VDC) SHERLOG can optionally be equipped with two independent power supply units for redundant mains operation. Because each power supply unit uses its own voltage input, two different power supply units can be chosen (e.g. a wide-range power supply unit and a 24 VDC power supply unit).

SHERLOG CRT
SHERLOG CRT has been specially designed as a decentralized monitoring system and is primarily used when the measurement points to be monitored are physically remote from one another, as is the case in switching stations or transformer substations. Installation requires no external components, such as voltage or current sensors, which would need extra mounting. The connection technology used is also geared towards simple, space-saving, low-cost installation, making the system ideal for use in protection cabinets, to mention just one example.

Detailed event recordings are available shortly after the occurrence of a fault. The integrated message management features comprehensive notification functions for faults, enabling immediate action to be taken even when more than one department is involved. Cost reductions result from the early detection of power system disturbances while detailed information on faults and automatic initial evaluation with fault location lead to shorter power system downtimes. Power systems become transparent thanks to the continuous recording of power system activity. Sources of disturbances can be identified and potential energy savings revealed. Proof of power system faults and of disturbance-free system operation in particular can be provided to customers at any time.

Setting parameters
The configuration module takes into account the actualities and requirements of modern power supply systems in a very practical way. Measuring range parameters can be entered in the form of transformer ratios, while lines and bus bars can be configured using appropriate network models. The device parameters and specific configurations for individual measurement locations are saved and managed in a database.

The powerful fault locator can be used to locate recorded disturbances. It can quickly characterise faults to support maintenance personnel as well as calculating the fault loop and detailing the fault type, fault impedance and distance from the measurement location. A formula editor can be used to make further mathematical calculations within fault records. The results are added to the fault record as an additional signal. Import and export functions enable data to be exchanged between different systems using standard COMTRADE, CSV and PQDIF file formats.
Evaluation
The software contains a comprehensive range of powerful analysis tools for the assessment of recorded data. Values can be displayed both numerically and graphically in each evaluation mode. Events are classified automatically according to pre-defined guidelines.
