Field of application
3 4 5 7 8
In view of the growing number of factors with a disturbing influence on power systems and the ever increasing sensitivity of devices and installations on the consumer side, simple monitoring criteria such as undervoltage or overcurrent are no longer adequate. Reliable registration of all the relevant processes within the electrical power system calls for constant observation of a wide variety of derived parameters, such as individual harmonic content, system unbalance and interharmonics, and the swift identification of even slight deviations from the norm. Modern power system monitoring equipment should be capable of comprehensively logging the mode of operation and the interaction of all the component parts of a power supply system. Only comprehensive and continuous monitoring of the entire power system enables all resources to be used purposively and effectively for the restoration of system operation should a disturbance occur. The recorded data can also be used as the basis for extending power networks and optimising primary and secondary technology. Not only the security of supply, but also the quality of electrical power is important for the smooth operation of electrical equipment in industrial, medical and electronic data processing environments. Because of this, power quality is increasingly being brought into play as a price criterion. So it is imperative for energy providers and customers alike to monitor and log power quality constantly. The need to record a very large number of electrical parameters simultaneously and continuously over sometimes very long periods of time places extreme demands on measuring equipment.

Product overview

Recording functions of EPPE and SHERLOG systems

Fast fault recording
When a limit value violation occurs, all analog and binary signals are recorded with a configurable resolution of 100 Hz to 30 kHz. The recording includes separately configurable time windows for pre-fault, fault and postfault periods. A special mode can be used to control the length of the fault recording period in accordance with the actual duration of the limit value violation. This method provides maximum information with minimum data volume.

Event recording
Event recording provides information on the time, level and duration of limit value violations and a classification of events to EN 50160, for example. If required, the event signatures can also be recorded with a time resolution of half a period. To keep memory requirements to a minimum, the sample rate can also be controlled dynamically. Fast signal changes are recorded with a higher resolution than slow signal changes.

Stationary measuring systems

Slow fault recording

In addition to the analog and digital signals which are measured directly, the RMS recorder function also records all the quantities calculated on the basis of these signals, such as frequency, unbalance, positive sequence system, negative sequence system and zero sequence system, active power, reactive power and apparent power, harmonics etc. The sample rate can be set between 1 Hz and double the system frequency (100 Hz/120 Hz). Each recording can include up to 30 seconds pre-fault time and 15 seconds post-fault time. This method is ideal for detecting and assessing slow processes such as power swings.

Power quality recording

The continuous recording of all power system parameters allows comprehensive power quality analysis to DIN EN 50160 or quality criteria defined by the individual user. Characteristic values are captured and calculated to IEC 61000-4-30 class A, IEC 61000-4-7 and IEC 61000-4-15. Because quality reports can be created automatically as PDF files, it is easy to provide proof of quality whenever required, even without specialist knowledge.

SHERLOG CRT / CX

SHERLOG C8

Continuous data recording

The data logger function records measurement data continuously. The recorded data can be downloaded to a central computer without interrupting the measurement. As a result, data can be recorded continuously for a number of years. The averaging intervals can be set between one second and 24 hours. For each averaging interval, the mean RMS value and the largest and smallest single RMS values are recorded with an exact time stamp. Up to 8 different averaging intervals, each with up to 500 selectable measurement quantities, can be recorded simultaneously. Long-term recordings provide comprehensive information on the entire power system, expose slow changes, as can result from a changing load or generator structure, and reveal potential for energy savings.

Recording digital events and states

Binary inputs are primarily used to read in signals from protection relays and circuit breaker positions which are of decisive importance for the analysis of fault records. Event classes with and without an acknowledgement obligation and message texts which can be listed or printed out chronologically can be assigned to the binary inputs for the continuous recording of binary signals (SER function).

Portable measuring systems

EPPE W8

SHERLOG P8

Time synchronisation
Power quality analysis and fault analysis with full area coverage call for precise time synchronisation. Only when measured values are recorded by a number of devices absolutely simultaneously, is it possible to compare them with one another and evaluate them correctly. This makes it possible to identify weak points in the supply system and remedy them efficiently. EPPE and SHERLOG systems can be synchronised with GPS, DCF 77 and NTP and for seconds or minutes pulses, so all common time synchronisation methods are available. Using the KoCoS synchronisation bus, any number of devices can be synchronised using a simple 2-wire connection. This leads to significant cost savings as only one measuring device per location needs to be synchronised against a precise time basis. This master system then synchronises all the other KoCoS measuring systems.

EPPE power quality analysers

Whatever processes are currently underway in your power system, the power quality analysers of the EPPE series will register even minor disturbances or alterations. All the parameters of an electrical supply system are recorded continuously and precisely. Detailed quality evaluations reveal even the slightest of deviations and help identify the cause of disturbances. Precise time synchronization of the measuring systems via GPS allows the measured data from a number of different devices to be consolidated in order to comprehensively monitor an entire supply system. EPPE systems continuously capture all power system parameters for the analysis and documentation of power quality to standards defined by the individual user or international standards such as EN 50160 or IEC 61000. High storage capacities and effective data compression methods enable long-term recordings to be made which can last for up to several years. As well as continuously recording all the quantities relevant to power quality, the integrated fault recorder module allows the eventtriggered capture of transient processes with sample rates of up to 30 kHz. EPPE measuring systems are available as table-top devices, for cabinet installation or in a portable housing for harsh environmental conditions.

Inputs and outputs

All analog and binary outputs and all interfaces are galvanically isolated and meet stringent occupational health and safety requirements. They also feature excellent immunity from electro-magnetic disturbances. Because of the absolutely linear frequency response, all the analog inputs are suitable for ac or dc quantities however they are configured and provide high accuracy across the entire measuring range. The special input circuitry of the binary inputs is designed for operation with voltages between 24 V and 300 V and effectively suppresses the detection of transients which can be caused by switching operations, for example. Freely configurable relay outputs can be used to indicate status signals, alarm signals or limit value violations to control systems, for example.

SHERLOG fault recorder systems for professional event analysis

The measuring devices of the SHERLOG range combine the monitoring functions of a high-class digital fault recorder with the features of a power quality analyser in a single system. They can be used to comprehensively monitor power engineering equipment such as lines and busbars and associated protection devices and switchgear equipment. As well as detecting faults and making high-resolution recordings of the signal characteristics in fault records, SHERLOG systems can also make long-term recordings of RMS value characteristics and calculate all the relevant power system parameters needed in order to determine and monitor power quality. Because SHERLOG devices can be easily networked, it is possible to create highly complex measuring systems which are capable of monitoring any number of bus bars and lines. SHERLOG can be used to monitor power systems precisely and reliably. As SHERLOG systems are entirely digital, their functioning is fully software-controlled. All processes and functions are freely programmable. New function modules or algorithms which meet new standards can easily be added during manual or automatic software maintenance. The NRGCenter software package is used to configure and control SHERLOG measuring instruments and to read out, archive and evaluate the recorded data.

Fields of application
SHERLOG systems are used in all the parts of an electricity supply network, from power generation and transmission right on through to the end user. They are suitable for all voltage levels.

Examples of applications:
n

Fault recorders for power stations, transformer substations and transmission networks at low, medium, high and extra-high voltage levels. Two simultaneous sampling frequencies of between 100 Hz and 30 kHz can record even extremely short events with precision and allow comprehensive analysis as well as fault location Capture of slow events such as power swings and transient phenomena. Continuous recording of all power system parameters with up to 8 simultaneous density levels for applications such as:

Power quality recording to EN50160, for example Load and frequency recording Analysis of power consumption Assessment of the capacity utilisation and stability of supply systems Capture of influences resulting from a constantly fluctuating generator and load structure Monitoring of general or individually agreed connection conditions for compliance with limit values
n

Documentation system for commissioning and service tests Chronological event recording and logging of binary status signals. Individually definable event classes, message texts and acknowledgement requirements make SHERLOG a fully fledged sequence-of-event recorder.

Safe and efficient

n

Because SHERLOG fault recorders contain no parts which are subject to wear and tear, such as hard disk memory or fans, they are 100% maintenance-free. Galvanic separation of all measurement inputs and communication interfaces for maximum flexibility and safe operation. Measurement data is saved reliably in the internal data memory and is not lost in the event of a power failure or when the device is switched off.

Power supply
The standard SHERLOG delivery package includes a wide-range power supply unit for flexible powering. Alternatively, SHERLOG can also be equipped with DC power supply units. Wide-range power supply unit (85 to 265 VAC / 90 to 350 VDC) Optional power supply units (9 to 18 VDC, 18 to 36 VDC, 36 to 72 VDC) SHERLOG can optionally be equipped with two independent power supply units for redundant mains operation. Because each power supply unit uses its own voltage input, two different power supply units can be chosen (e.g. a wide-range power supply unit and a 24 VDC power supply unit).

A formula editor can be used to make further mathematical calculations within fault records. The results are added to the fault record as an additional signal. Import and export functions enable data to be exchanged between different systems using standard COMTRADE, CSV and PQDIF file formats.

Evaluation
