William Martn (Billy) Joel (nacido el 9 de mayo de 1949 en Bronx) es un cantante, compositor y pianista estadounidense. Billy Joel ha grabado muchos xitos populares desde 1973 (empezando con el sencillo "Piano Man") hasta su retiro para grabar msica pop en 1993. Primeros aos
Billy Joel primero viva en el Sur del Bronx, en la Ciudad de Nueva York, pero su familia pronto se mud a Long Island, especficamente, a Levittown seccin de Hicksville. Sus padres posteriormente se divorciaron, y su padre regres a la Europa del Este. Su hermanastro Alexander Joel es un aclamado pianista clsico y director de orquesta en Europa.[4] Desde una temprana edad, Billy Joel tuvo un intenso inters en la msica, especialmente la msica clsica[5] . Al xito de Piano Man, el cual hizo que llamara la atencin del pblico, le sigui una tercia de discos considerados como de lo mejor de la historia del rock/pop, The Stranger, lbum que Joel public en 1977 lo hizo acreedor a un Grammy[14] por Mejor Disco del Ao mientras que Just The Way You Are, cancin que aparece en el Disco, se convertira en el clsico de Joel, The Stranger incluso apareci en la Lista de la Revista Rolling Stone dentro de los mejores 100 lbumes de todos los tiempos,[15] al igual que el lbum siguiente de Joel, 52nd Street que termin de situarlo en la cima del estrellato[16] .

Los 80
Durante los 80 la msica de Joel cambi, de aquel rock/pop alegre, virtuoso, y pegajoso acompaado de letras que hablaban de experiencias en bares, contando historias de viajes y regresos como "Seen The Lights Gone Out On Broadway", "New York State of Mind" o "Allentown"[17] , tuvo un radical cambio al entrar los 80 donde su estilo y sus letras cambiaron para hacerlas un tanto ms romnticas, introspectivas, y tranquilas, sobre todo al inicio de la dcada[18] . Joel tuvo que cambiar la pasividad de sus letras y de su msica, que no por ser pasiva dej de ser brillante, y tuvo que adecuarse al estilo predominante de los 80[14] , la desmesurada alegra en la sociedad explcita en las canciones de cada artista[14] . El primer disco de Joel en los 80 "The Nylon Courtain" trata temas introspectivos, y en cierto punto, rayando con lo poltico, como las guerras[19] , que deja ver en su tema "Goodnight

Billy Joel Saigon" una de sus mejores canciones y que significa un homenaje a aquellos soldados perdidos en la Guerra de Vietnam[20] . A finales de la dcada Joel volvi a cambiar su apariencia, y su msica de nuevo volvi a ser el clsico contador de historias de los 70, con sus descripciones nicas y con sus ritmos pegajosos en cada cancin que escriba[21] . En 1992, el crdito que deba en la materia de Ingls fue dispensado por la junta de la escuela Hicksville y recibi su diploma en una ceremonia de graduacin tras 25 aos despus que dej la escuela[14] . Se ha casado 3 veces, una vez a la modelo Christie Brinkley, y tiene una hija con Brinkley llamada Alexa Ray Joel de 23 aos que ya ha sacado un disco y es una destacada pianista y cantante soul[22] .
