Author of "Fixed Sirs end Constelatons in Astrology”PREFACE For many years there has been a demand for an up-to-date, concise and comprehensive text book of Astrology that is complete in itself and does away with the necessity of pur- chasing one or more additional volumes, and it is primarily to meet this need that the present work has been undertaken. The method of arrangement that has finally been adopted is in some respects new, inasmuch as it has been my endeavour to make each chapter complete in itself and so dispense with the: usual annoying necessity of turning back to the introductory chapters in order to find the influence of the planeis and signs on the particular matter under consideration. Each chapter is, therefore, arranged so as to include the general rules applicable to that section, the specific effects of planets and signs, and a number ‘of special rules or aphorisms. “By including the latter T am aware that I lay myself open to the charge of treating the subject in too cut- and-dried a manner, but I have endeavoured to correct any such view of astrology itself in the chapter on general principles of judgment, and moreover, many of the rules are of such value that it seemed a pity to omit them, es- pecially as accuracy and definition of judgment are the qualities most needed in present day astrological practice YA good deal of hitherto unpublished material will be found scattered throughout the book, and as much detail in every case as could be conveniently compressed in a manner consistent with clearness. Had space been no object I should have endeavoured to have illustrated each important statement by an example nativity but this would have expanded the work to an unmanageable size, and was found to be impracticable. In conclusion I take this opportunity of ex- pressing my thanks to many friends and pupils for their helpful interest and suggestions, and in particular to Mr. Clifford Bax, without whose Kindly offices the work would never have been produced.
