En 1564 se descubri el grafito, en Cumberland, (Inglaterra, cercana a la frontera con Escocia). Esto permiti la invencin de los lpices de grafito, que se introdujeron en Francia, en la corte de Luis XIII. A partir de la mitad del Siglo XVII, las minas inglesas de grafito eran explotadas por la corona, y servan tambin para la fundicin de caones y su produccin estaba muy reglamentada, por lo que se penaba con pena de muerte al obrero que llegara a extraer un fragmento de dicho material. En 1792 se cortaron las relaciones entre Francia e Inglaterra. Esto hizo que el ingeniero francs Jacques-Nicols Cont, ideara unos lpces de grafito y arcilla, rodeados de madera de cedro. Pronto se impusieron en todo el mundo. Aunque otras documentaciones indican que el verdadero inventor fue el hijo de un carpintero, el austraco Josef Hardtmuth, del cual se habla en detalle en la nota periodstica incluida al pie de la pgina. La dureza de los lpices depende de la proporcin entre grafito (una variedad del carbono) y arcilla: cuanto ms grafito se utilice, ms blando u oscuro es el trazo del lpiz. Se mezclaba polvo de grafito con arcilla, cortando en pequeas barras que luego se cocan.
