APQ 5. Optical pumping and optical molasses.

(a) Optical pumping with transitions. Draw a diagram to describe the optical pumping process with light driving transitions for a F = 1 F = 1 transition. Use solid lines to indicate the absorption, and wiggly lines for spontaneous emission. State where the population accumulates. [2 marks] (b) Scattering rate. An alkali-metal atom at rest is placed in a laser eld with intensity I/ISAT = 1.0 which is tuned on the principal resonance to an excited state with lifetime = 30.55 ns. How many photons (to the nearest integer) does the atom scatter in 1.0 s? [2 marks] (c) Force-velocity curve for 1-D optical molasses. Draw a graph of the force versus velocity for 1-D optical molasses. Assume the laser frequency is detuned by three quarters of a linewidth to the red (i.e. / = 3/4), and that the intensity of each beam is I/ISAT = 0.05. Use the dimensionless variables 2F/( k) for the ordinate and h (kv/) for the abscissa. [3 marks] (d) Maximising the optical friction. Derive the detuning at which the optical friction is maximised for 1-D optical molasses. Assume the weak-eld limit (I/ISAT 1). [3 marks]
