Nursing Process- Assessment
(Pre-administration assessment)
Apical pulse and blood pressure prior to
and throughout therapy. Watch for
tachyarrhythmias and chest pain
Lab value alterations caused by medicine
Monitor thyroid function studies prior and during therapy.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this
medication
Take as directed at the same time each day. Take in
morning before breakfast to prevent insomnia. Take missed
doses as soon as remembered unless almost time for next
dose. Teach pt and family correct technique for checking
pulse. Do not give dose if pulse is >100bpm. Have thyroid
function tests done at least yearly.
Talk to your health care provider if… more than 2-3 doses
are missed, you decide to discontinue therapy, you
experience headache, nervousness, diarrhea, excessive
sweating, heat intolerance, chest pain, ↑ pulse, palpitations,
wt. loss >2 lb/wk, you are taking other medications.
Assessment Evaluation

Resolution of symptoms of
tachycardia, chest pain, nervousness, hypothyroidism: dieresis, wt. loss,
insomnia, diaphoresis, tremors, weight ↑ sense of well-being, ↑energy,
loss. pulse rate, appetite, psychomotor
activity. Normalization of skin
texture and hair. Correction of
constipation, ↑ T3 and T4 levels.
