Although in recent years a considerable number of texts of the Muzu rabi« liturgy have heen published, there has been no serious attempt to reconstruct the Breviary on the basis of extant manuscripts, The text of a Toledo Psalter with canticles and hymns was published by Lorenzana ': a similar manuscript from Santo Domingo de Silos was edited for the Henrv Bradshaw Society"; the monks of Silos have recently published the indispensable Leon Antiphnuarv", and the Orotionalc has long been available in Bianchini's edition'. However, thes,' texts an: not sulflcicnt 10 give a clear idea of the Mozurahic choirservices, and if. is still necessary to tum to Cisneros' Breninriutn Goiliicum ". which is at best a confu~ed and uusutisfacturv compilation, 'I'll,' late 'V. C. Bishop's article, The Breviary ill Spain ''. gives an idea or the problem, which can only be clurifled hv a studv of the uumerous manuscripts which contain Ikeviary texts. . , The admirable analysis of Mozarabic liturgical manuscripts illeluded hy DOlH Ferotin in his Libel' Mozarobicus :'iuCf(UllentOI"f11ll f is obviously the starting point for such a study. However, his description of manuscripts conta ining the Psalter and Liber CanticOtl1lH is not sufficicnllv detailed. l n the pusl seven years I have pho[ugrapiled or collated these manuscripts with a view to making eventually a new text of th~ Mozurabic Psalter and Liber Calilicomm, but the desirability ol publishing now a brief account of them recently became app~rent \~hen mv Iricnd l\nd 'V. S. Porter began a study of the Mozaruhic canticles ar~d their us«. and found lhal tlu- available descriptions were quite inadequate. Mr. Porter has kindly given me a eopy of lhc manuscript of his article in Ephemerides Liturqicae ·W (l\J;l5) 12(}·45, "Cantica mozuruhici officii". wich contains a compurutive tablc 0[' the Mozarahic canticles. I have therefore adopted the numbering of his comparative table and indicate oulv bv that means ."~ for example "Porter 72" ~-~ the canticles which ~IPI;e~!l:in the manuscripts. as details of their origin und lise will he found ill his sludv. Of the eight manuscripts the first is the most complete . .'ldd . .')O851 lacks many Ieuvcs, but is of primary importance because of the richness of Iiturgicul formulae which accompany the psalms. The Nogent-surMarne and the Aeudcuiiu de In Historia manuscripts are all incomplete. The Santiago Diuruo and the Madrid Libel' CUllliconrm are roynl Books of Hours rather than officiul Iiturgicul texts, but both contain unusually large collectious of canticles. The Escorial manuscript is also essentiully a hook of private devotion, hut is included as it contains the complete Psalter. In origin the manuscripts are representative, as one is known to come from Toledo, two from Santo Domingo de Silos and two from Sun Millan de fa CogoUa. :1 eight an' written in Visigothic minuscule, and all have i\iozarabic initials or varying quality. The most beautifully illuminated is the Santiago Diurno, but its decorations relate rather to its royal owner than to its text. In Part II of the Nogent-sur-Marne manuscript and in Aemi/. ().iter a miniature illustrating the text Dominus de Sino urnict pl't'eedcs the lirst canticle: as in four other manuscripts there

S c rip t. The manuscript is written in a beautiful and careful Visigothic minuscule. Dr. Lowe dates it "suec. X-Xl ut vid.", and notes the observance of the ti distinction, regular use of i Ionga (even before tall letters at the beginning of words) and the presence of a prefix to the tops of the tall letters. The captions of the psalms are in red minuscule; those of the larger divisions of the text are in red and black capitals. There is a considerable amount of Mozarabic neumatic notation throughout the manuscript. . I II u 111 ina t ion. There are illuminated initials for each psalm, canticle and hymn; the drawing is fair, but the colour is poorly applied. A good idea of their style may be obtained by consulting the plates of Archer M. Huntington's Initials and Miniatures ... from the Moza-

rabic Manuscripts of Santo Domingo de Silos, although the colours of the reproductions are sometimes too bright; the originals are often almost muddy. Con t c nt s. The text of the entire manuscript has been published so scrupulously hy the late .J. P. Gilson that any detailed analysis of the contents would be superfluous. Although it is so incomplete that many psalms and canticles are wanting, its richness ill liturgical formulae makes it of extraordinary interest. The psalms are accompanied by antiphons (with musical notation) and appropriate prayers, and at the end of the manuscript arc a number of minor offices. I give only the main headings with rel'crenccs to Gilson's edition. 1"01. I". Incipil: Inc nobis uias uite el propter donum gratie tue ... (fol. G') EXPLICIT LIBEl'!. PHIMUS. Gilson, 1-9. rot. Genealogical note on the Kings of Leon written in gold letters on a purple ground. f'ol, 208'", The following inscription, also in gold letters on a purple ground, enclosed by interlaces:

The opening iriitials of the psalms and canticles are Iinelv decorated, with a lavish use of gold that is quite uncommon in ~'isjgothie manuscripts. The D of Ps, ci, Domine e:nmdi orotionem meam is particularly elaborate, and as the leaf that contained Cant. i is wanting it is to be supposed that it was decorated with a miniature that made it worth stealing. Floral and animal ornament predominate, but human figures are introduced in folios 21", 25v, 29", 57\ 6W', ~)8r, 107", 170". 18;F and lHW. A hart forms the initial S of Ps, xli (Iol. 41").
