Naci en Scranton, Pennsylvania, en 1943, poco despus de que su familia emigrase a Estados Unidos huyendo del rgimen nazi.

Estudi en la Universidad de Harvard, donde se orient hacia la psicologa y la neuropsicologa. Sus lneas de investigacin se han centrado en el anlisis de las capacidades cognitivas en menores y adultos, a partir del cual ha formulado la teora de las 'inteligencias mltiples' (Frames of Mind, 1983). Profesor de psicologa de la Universidad de Harvard y de neurologa en la de Boston, es presidente del comit gestor del Project Zero (Escuela Superior de Educacin de Harvard). Participa, asimismo, en el GoodWork Projetc, destinado a mejorar la calidad y la autoestima profesionales, en el que se toman en consideracin, fundamentalmente, los factores de la excelencia y la tica.
