History Day Annotated Bibliography

Primary Sources: Books:

Frank. "Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe (1958-62)." Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe (1958-62). Wed. 23 Dec. 2011. <http://www.newstatesman.com/books/2010/09/mao-china-famine-western>. This was a pretty good source. Franois Mitterrand, someone who visited China during Mao Tse-Tungs rule. He described what he had seen with great detail. Geyer, Flera. Mao Zedong: A Rebel Who Led a Revolution. National Geographic, 2007. Print. This source gave really good information on Mao Tse-Tungs background. Because of this, you can really tell how Maos personality is, like how when his mom and dad fell ill, and died, he never even went to visit them after leaving his house in 1911. He loved bloodshed, violence, and blood. In 1921, he described with cold-heart fascination as hundreds suffered and starved to death. This source was one of the best ones I ever used. Liu, Heung Shing. China after Mao "Seek Truth from Facts" New York [u.a.: Penguin, 1983. Print. This book helped me a lot. Inside it, it explained the Cultural Revolution, Great Leap Forward, and the Great Chinese Famine. It also explained the impacts after Mao TseTungs ruling. It included pictures in it to help the reader understand the story better. I would recommend this source. MacFarquhar, Roderick, and Michael Schoenhals. Mao's Last Revolution. Harvard UP, 2006. Print. This book also helped me a lot. Inside it, it explained the Cultural Revolution, Great Leap Forward, and the Great Chinese Famine. It also explained the impacts after Mao Tse-Tungs ruling. It included pictures and graphs in it to help the reader understand the story better. This source also included many quotes of what Mao said, after being interviewed by Roderick MacFarquhar. I would totally recommend this source, it has excellent information.

Videos:
Chairmen Mao - The Untold Story. Dir. Jeremy Bennett. London: Antelope Tele Images Production for BBC, 1993. Videocassette. This is one of my most important sources. This source explained, with great details, of how Mao Tse-Tung came into power. This source contained videos of the Cultural Revolution, Great Leap Forward, and the Great Chinese Famine. It also included interviews with some of the people alive during that time, like Chen Yi Zhi, a student during the Cultural Revolution who was harassed, beaten, and tortured. I would recommend this source to you guys, it gives excellent information.

Secondary Sources: Books:

Becker, Jasper. Hungry Ghosts: Mao's Secret Famine. New York: Free, 1996. Print. This is one of my most important sources. The book was mostly about the Famine, which during that time in my research; I did not have much information about it. This book really did help me. It a lot of quotes and even supported its story with pictures. It gave statistics of how many people died during the Famine. Former Communist Party Chen Yizi says that 80 million died unnatural deaths-most of them in the Famine following the Great Leap Forward. Excellent information. Corrin, Jay, June Grasso, and Michael Kort. Modernization and Revolution in China: From the Opium Wars to the Olympics. Armonk, NY: M. E. Sharpe, 1991. Print. This book is very useful if you are trying to learn about the Opium Wars in China. This source really explained the Opium War and how it affected China. Though, this source would be better if it had charts, pictures, and quotes to further help explain the story. This book is pretty good, with good information. Poole, Frederick King. Mao Zedong; An Impact Biography. New York: F. Watts, 1982. Print. This was a pretty good source. This source was basically about Mao Tse-Tung and how he got power. It had pictures which really help me get the image of Mao. I really got to understand his personality even more due to his. This source could be better if it had more pictures and maybe even quotes.

Interviews:
Dodgen, Randall. Personal phone Interview. January 25, 2012. This is one of my most important sources. Professor Randall Dodgen really did help me. He answered my questions to the best of his abilities, and helped me find evidence for places that it was needed. He also recommended a book that helped me find more evidence for my story.

Websites:
"1950: The Land Reform." China.org.cn. Web. <http://www.china.org.cn/features/60years/200909/15/content_18530605.htm>. 06 Jan. 2012.

This site was pretty useful to me. Even if it didnt have a lot of information, this source explained what the Land reform was, one of the good things that Mao had actually done. It would be better if it had pictures, quotes, and even graphs if possible. "BBC - History - Chiang Kai-shek." BBC - Homepage. Web. 27 Sept. 2011. <http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/chiang_kaishek.shtml>. I basically used this site to research about Mao Tse-Tungs enemy during the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Kai-Shek. I researched him because I felt like I needed to know his side of the story, and what his battle tactics was. This site was pretty good, I learned a great deal about Chiang. This site has pretty useful information. "China-Taiwan Relations." Cfr.org. Web. 27 Sept. 2011 <http://www.cfr.org/china/ china-taiwan-relations/p9223>. I basically used this site to research about Taiwan and China Relationships, after all Chiang Kai-Shek lost and ran to Formosa Taiwan. This site was pretty good, but I did not really find anything useful for my History Day project.

Wachtel, Katya, and Vincent Fernando. "10 Horrific Economic Crises Where Nations Emerged Stronger Than Ever." Business Insider. Web. 20 Dec. 2011. <http://www.businessinsider.com/10-horrific-economic-crises-where-nationsemerged-stronger-than-ever-2010-9?op=1>. I basically used this source to find pictures for my website. This was a pretty good source, though I would be happier if they have even more pictures, graphs, and maybe even a couple of quotes would be good.
