From Roman settlement to Docklands regeneration, this 200 year old warehouse reveals the long history of London as a port through stories of trade, migration and commerce. Discover a wealth of objects from whale bones to World War II gas masks in state-of-the-art galleries, including Sailortown, an atmospheric recreation of 19th century Wapping, and London, Sugar & Slavery, which reveals the part the capital played in the transatlantic slave trade. The Museum is fully accessible to wheelchair users. The Galleries of Modern London include induction loops, Braille panels, touch objects and audio guides for the visually impaired. Until 10 June 2012 Celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens with the UKs first major exhibition on the author for over 40 years. Recreating the atmosphere of Victorian London, youll be taken on a haunting journey to discover the city that inspired his writings. Paintings, photographs, costumes and objects illustrate themes that Dickens wove into his works, while rarely seen manuscripts written in his own hand offer clues to his creative genius.

The Dispossessed: poverty in London


Mon 12 Mar, 7-8.30pm With almost half of Londons children living below the poverty line, in 2010 the Evening Standard launched a fundraising campaign to help the capitals dispossessed. Join the papers editor, Geordie Greig, alongside David Cohen, the journalist who spearheaded the campaign, to discuss how hardship can be alleviated in our city and discover the initiatives supported by the fund to date.

Simon Callow on Dickens

Occupation, protest, riot: documenting social unrest

Lomography workshops
Sat 7, 14, 21 & 28 Apr, 1.30-3pm Discover the thriving world of analogue photography! Lomography experts will show how to achieve vibrant results with old-school cameras and film, before leading participants on a walk to capture the capital. The alternative Diamond Jubilee

Stories of the city with Craig Taylor

Dickens on the Thames: a literary boat trip


Sat 5 May, 2-5pm Spend an afternoon boating down the Thames, discovering Dickens London and the river at its heart. From Embankment Pier to Greenwich and back, experts Alex Werner and Tony Williams (co-authors of Dickenss Victorian London) will uncover the key sights of the authors life and works from the blacking factory where he worked as a boy to the Limehouse pub in Our Mutual Friend.

DOCKLANDS CINEMA CLUB


Watch a great film every month screened in a Grade I listed Georgian warehouse, with introductions by leading writers, directors, critics and fans. The Story of Lovers Rock (2011) 12A


Fri 11 May, 7-9pm This ground-breaking study of Lovers Rock or romantic reggae explores the black British sound of the 1970s and 80s which developed against a backdrop of riots and racial tensions, and went on to influence a huge number of musicians, from Gregory Isaacs to UB40.
