LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Title (or focus) of the Lesson: _____________________SOHCAHTOA___________________________ Grade Level(s): _9-11____ Time Required for Lesson Delivery: _30-45 min_____

Purpose(s) for teaching the lesson:

A2.A.73 Solve for an unknown side or angle, using the Law of Sines or the Law of Cosines A.A.42 Find the sine, cosine, and tangent ratios of an angle of a right triangle, given the lengths of the sides A.A.43 Determine the measure of an angle of a right triangle, given the length of any two sides of the triangle A.A.44 Find the measure of a side of a right triangle, given an acute angle and the length of another side A.A.45 Determine the measure of a third side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean theorem, given the lengths of any two sides

Objective(s): Given a teacher presentation of guided notes, the student will be

introduced to the properties and guidelines of sine, cosine, and tangent. T.S.W. solve a geometric problem sheet of 20 questions with an 80% minimum grade using side and angle properties of right triangles given SAS, SSA, and ASS properties.

Materials:
A. B. Materials for Teacher Use: PowerPoint Presentation and Chalk Board Materials for Student Use: Packet Hand-Out with Examples and Problems

Instructional Strategies:
I. Opening: Review of right triangle properties: ask students to write as many properties about right triangles as they can in 2 minutes. Then review their findings for 3 minutes among students. II. Body: Review of which sides are the adjacent, opposite, and hypotenuse corresponding to a certain angle. Student introduction to the SOHCAHTOA property of right triangles using sin, cos, and tan. Teacher will provide and assist students through 510 examples of each situation with differently orientated right triangles. The use of sampling, signaling, and directed questions will occur during examples until adequate knowledge can be proven. Then student will do 5-10 examples of each situation independently with teacher monitoring progress and reactions.

III. Closing: Students will be reminded about the acronym SOHCAHTOA and the role it plays in relation to right triangles. Students will be given the ability assessment sheet with the 20 questions on it for homework that will be collected the following day.

Assessment
I. Assessment Methods and Evaluation A. Assessment: The use of sampling, signaling, and directed questions during the lesson to assess student progression. The use of monitoring student behavior during independent practice in class to gauge understanding. The 20 question homework grades will assess overall competence of lesson and method. Evaluation: Students homework will be evaluated based on the use of the right law (sin, cos, tan), the use of the right sides corresponding to opposite, adjacent, or hypotenuse, and the placement of the sides corresponding to the angle in their law ratios.

II.

Self-assessment/reflection: A. Teacher self-assessment: Was the lesson long enough? Did the students understand the material? What could be done to better student understanding? Were students actively involved throughout the lesson? Student self-assessment & Student Assessment of Instruction: After collecting homework the next day ask students to form small groups of 2-4 and create a written evaluation of ideas and aspects that could be added or improved upon from the previous day.
