Roosevelts Square Deal Vocabulary Concept Card Assignment Objective: Students will create concept cards for 4 words

from Chapter 8, Section 1 to illustrate their knowledge of the meanings of these words.

Directions: Pick 4 words that you either feel very comfortable with the definitions of or that you want to more thoroughly understand the definitions of to include in your concept cards. Divide your paper into 4 sections, 1 section for each task. For each word you choose, you must include: o the words definition from the book, o a picture to illustrate its meaning (with color), o the word used in a sentence o a new title for the term. We will vote as a class to determine who created the best card for each word. .

Roosevelts Square Deal US History- Y202 Smoovley 1. Square Deal- Roosevelts program of reforms that kept the wealthy and powerful from taking advantage of small business owners and the poor. 2. Hepburn Act- law passed that gave the Interstate Commerce Commission strong enforcement power over railroad shipping costs. 3. Meat Inspection Act- law passed after Sinclairs The Jungle came out, allowed federal agents to inspect any meat sold across state lines and required federal inspection of meat-processing plants. 4. Pure Food and Drug Act- allowed for federal agents to inspect other foods and medicine like the Meat Inspection Act. 5. John Muir and Gifford Pinchot- leading naturalists at the turn of the 20th Century who influenced Roosevelt to create a vast majority of the national park system. 6. National Reclamation Act- gave the government power to decide where and how water would be distributed. 7. Progressive Party- the split between the Republican Party and the Progressives led to the creation of the Progressive Party for the election of 1912. 8. New Nationalism- a program to restore the governments trustbusting power. 9. Theodore Roosevelt- 43rd President, focused much of his time on making America more fair for the disadvantaged and unprotected.
