The Reader and the Scholar 10:45-10:55 RA Hamlet and the Region of Death.

Students underline passages that strike them. 10:55-11:20 Tri-column Response Journal Students copy down 2 underlined passages in left column. Students respond to first quote in middle column. (4 minutes) Pass journals left. Students respond to second quote by considering why care? in regards to this quote. (4 minutes) Pass journals back. Original student responds to the question of why care? (4 minutes) Choose 5 students to read either the middle or the right column for the response to why care?. Students respond by writing down the words or phrases that stand out as the center of gravity of the response. Have 5 students quickly share their CoG for each response. Open for discussion if more students want to discuss. 11:20-45 (time depending on previous discussion) Re-read Moretti's final answer (When I read...) Silently, read Dickinson's Parting as a reader. Respond to the poem in notebook. (5 minutes) Silently re-read Parting as a scholar. Respond in notebook (5 minutes) PW: What did you notice about your responses? (5 minutes) Choose 5 students to read their process write. Students respond by writing down the words or phrases that stand out as the center of gravity of the response. With remaining time: RA In Praise of Not Knowing (if limited time, read final 3 paragraphs) Bring out an object (could be regular, could be odd).
