Bouchaine Vineyards
by Charles Neave
If you start making a list of hidden gems those wineries that come as a surprise and a delight and remain in your memory for years to come, but in all reality are just minutes off the road more travelled (to paraphrase) then put down Bouchaine Vineyards in the Carneros region of Napa County. Perhaps 15 minutes from the City of Napa and, at the most, five minutes from Route 121, the road that connects Napa and Sonoma counties, this amazing place of vineyards and gardens and sweeping views is nothing short of exceptional. The fact that I did not discover it until a few weeks ago makes me wonder, but the fact that I finally did, after living in the heart of Wine Country for coming on to two decades, makes it all worthwhile. At some wineries you never see the winemaking area itself, or you miss the plantings and the grapes. Not here. You park your car, walk past the winemaking crush pad on the right (the buildings in themselves are worth photographing since they are both purpose-driven and sensitive to the locale and environment) and all about you, on both sides, are beds of indigenous plants of more kinds than I could ever name. You will also see a sign that says that pets are welcome by appointment. Since between two and four winery pups inhabit the spacious property they are sensitive to the fact that not all canines get along with each other. Your own is welcome, just call first and they will take care of the pet logistics. The winery itself is the oldest continuously operating winery in the region. The original winery was built in 1899, and today is a champion of using sustainable vineyard practices to make distinctive wines. Their winemaking philosophy is both succinct and admirable. As winemaker Michael Richmond explains, it is all about using the cool and often (and almost always in the morning) foggy climate to craft Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the varietals that thrive here. We want out wines to show lingering flavors and depth, a smooth texture, and just the right level of acidity to pair with many foods, from the simple to the sublime. He adds, The Pinot Noirs are redolent of cherries and berries, roses and coffee, smoke and spices. The Chardonnay is all about fragrance, texture and finish, and about combining the best of Los Carneros and Napa to craft a wine that he describes as all about yellow flowers, lemon cream and ginger. The Chardonnay is all from estate fruit from their own vineyards. What it comes down to is the taste. In this case, you can have

J Vineyards & Winery Commemorates 25th Anniversary with Special Visitor Center Event, September 17
Russian River Valley wine producer, J Vineyards & Winery, kicks off its 25th Anniversary with a special public celebration and harvest party on Saturday, September 17. The festivities will be held at the winerys Visitor Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature products from specialty food producers such as Hog Island Oyster Company, Tsar Nicoulai Caviar and the Savory Spice Shop in Santa Rosa. There will also be live music and tastings of past and present J wines. Founder Judy Jordan will be signing bottles and Js new Winemaker, Melissa Stackhouse, will be giving fans a sneak peek of the 2010 vintage wines. Im looking forward to meeting everyone who attends, says Judy Jordan, Founder and President of J Vineyards & Winery. This is a major milestone for J and a wonderful occasion to toast those who have helped in the success of J. In 1991, J launched its first wine a 1987 Vintage Brut just as the Gulf War in Kuwait began. It was not exactly the perfect time to encourage Americans to celebrate, but every bottle was sold 4,000 cases in 32 cities within six months. From day one, J was embraced as the essence of style, an allAmerican alternative to French Champagne. J Vintage Brut has been a welcome fixture on high-profile restaurant wine lists and top hotels around the world. Queen Elizabeth sipped J at the White House, Mikhail Gorbachev spoke of world peace with a glass of J in hand, and J sparkling wines were the official celebratory bubbles of the Academy Awards Governors Ball for four consecutive years. Admission is $40 per person for Club J members and $55 for nonmembers. Included is a commemorative glass and inspired culinary creations by J's Executive Chef Mark E. Caldwell. Tickets are now on sale at the Visitor Center. To purchase tickets by phone, call (707) 431-5430 or go online at www.jwine.com. J Vineyards & Winery Visitor Center and Bubble Room is located at 11447 Old Redwood Highway, south of Healdsburg. The winery focuses on Brut and Brut Ros sparkling wines, as well as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris Estate varietal wines, produced from grapes farmed primarily within Sonoma County's Russian River Valley appellation. Founded in 1986, J Vineyards & Winery is an independentlyowned Sonoma County winery. To learn more, or to join the J Wine Club, go to www.jwine.com. Todd Crowell
by Sue Straight, The Wine Wench
Let the wine make itself is what Todd Crowell, Winemaker for Christopher Creek Winery told me when I asked him what his personal winemaking philosophy was. This hands-off style of winemaking is really working for Todd and Christopher Creek the medals (including several gold medals, a best of class and a sweepstakes!) and accolades have been pouring in since Todd started working at Christopher Creek back in 2008. Houston, Texas, is where Todd grew up. He graduated from Texas A & M with degrees in Horticulture and Chemistry. He worked for a couple of Texas wineries during college, then wines siren song lured him to Sonoma County, where he worked for Stonestreet Winery and White Oak Winery respectively, before finding a home at Christopher Creek Winery in 2008. Todd is the kind of guy that everyone likes he has an easygoing, laid-back vibe, hes quietly articulate and intelligent and he really loves what he does for a living. He tells me with a megawatt smile, Its a job, but its not work. For fun, Todd gardens, rides his mountain bike, cooks, bakes and takes advantage of all of the great live music happening in Sonoma County he loves going out to see local bands play. Todd is also a devoted single dad he loves spending time with his 3-year-old-son. When you come to Christopher Creek Winery to taste some of Todds fantastic wines, chances are youll see him working around the cellar and hear strains of reggae, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead and other eclectic music in the wine-scented air. Todd also loves answering visitors questions and welcomes them to watch him working his craft on the crush pad during harvest time. Lets talk about the wines I tasted a handful of wines during my visit with Todd and I loved them all, but only have room to write about a couple of them here. The following wines were my favorites: 2009 Viognoer, Caties Corner $28: Absolutely gorgeous! This wine is so aromatic that I wanted to splash some behind my ears! Aromas of ripe peach, nectarine, apple, honeysuckle and lemon blossom leap out of the glass and lure the taster into a luscious mouthful of consistent flavors (Double Gold San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition). 2008 Reserve Petite Sirah $32: I can see why this wine won sweepstakes at the Riverside International Wine Competition it is fantastic! Aromas and flavors of blueberry, blackberry and peppery spice abound, all wrapped up in a richly textured mouthfeel. If you are visiting Sonoma County, stop by Christopher Creek Winery, taste their wonderful wines and say hi to Todd. Youll be glad you did! Christopher Creek Winery is located at 641 Limerick Lane, Healdsburg. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For more information, call (707) 433-2001 or visit their website at www.christophercreek.com.

Perfect Pairs
Enricos Cioppino Paired with VJB 2008 Estate Syrah
Cioppino is a hearty classic seafood stew that my husband simply loves. It has loads of fresh seafood and while it does take some time to prepare, its one of those lovely Sunday afternoon meals that sits and simmers on the stove while filling the house with delightful aromas that you cant wait to taste. This recipe is from Henry Belmonte, owner of VJB Vineyards & Cellars and son to Vittorio and Maria. While Vittorio and Henry oversee all aspects of the winery and winemaking, Maria has taken her passion for food to the next level. She is the Executive Chef at the winery creating amazing dishes for lunches, dinners and special events as well as written a cookbook. She has also created a line of sauces, pestos and tapenades which are sold in their tasting room and online. Henry has followed in her footsteps and is a phenomenal cook! He says, Italian families, like mine, traditionally feast on seafood on Christmas Eve. This is one of my all-time favorite recipes and if I am hosting Christmas Eve dinner, this seafood stew is always on the menu. This dish allows for so many variations that it is really simple to do. The VJB 2008 Estate Syrah brings flavors of plum, blackberry, coffee and cocoa with a lingering finish of spice notes and licorice. The firm fruit tannins and acidity round out the tomato base of the cioppino making for a beautiful pairing. If you havent visited VJB Vineyards & Cellars yet, then you are in for a treat. They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for general tastings and when you arrive, you will experience the charm of an Italian family winery. If you would like a more intimate setting, you can book a reserve seated tasting for $15. This tasting includes samples of their limited production wines and small plates of Italian bites made by Maria. They also offer a Private Estate Tasting for $25 that includes a tasting of six to eight different traditional Italian and California varietals with a wine educator. Be sure to call in advance (707) 833-2300 to book your next tasting or stop by to sample some of Marias delicious sauces.

ENRICOS CIOPPINO

Add the wine and simmer for 15 more minutes. Add the chopped and pureed tomatoes and simmer for 30 minutes. While the stock is simmering, prepare the seafood. In a large saut pan, cook 1 clove of minced garlic in cup of the white wine over high heat until garlic is soft, about 2 minutes. Add the fish filets and cook until flesh stars to blanch, about 2 minutes. Flip the fillets and add 8 tablespoons of butter to the pan. Reduce the heat to low and cook fish until medium rare, about 5 minutes. Remove fillets and add them to the stock where they will finish cooking and break into hearty chunks. In the same saut pan, add the remaining garlic and cup wine and cook over high heat until garlic is tender about 1 minute. Add the prawns, scallops and clams and cook until the scallops begin to turn pale white. Flip the prawns and scallops, add the remaining butter, reduce to low heat and simmer until the flesh is medium rare, 2-3 minutes. Remove the prawns and scallops from the pan and add them to the stock. When the clams have opened, in a few more minutes, add them to the stock along with all their juices. Gently stir all the ingredients together, season with salt and pepper to taste and serve immediately in large soup bowls. Garnish with grated parmesan cheese and serve with a crusty loaf of bread to soak up all those great juices.

family-owned properties, you will have plenty of opportunities to learn about each propertys history and winemaking philosophy. Any wine purchases made throughout the day will be picked up by their van and waiting for you back at their shop. After visiting two or three wineries, a gourmet picnic style lunch in the vineyards will be served. After lunch, the tour resumes and you will visit a couple more wineries before heading back to their shop. If you arrive back and arent ready to turn in the bikes, they will provide you with a self-guided tour map where you can continue riding until 5 p.m. At that time, you can call it a day or book another tour as the routes change daily. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, the self-guided tours are for you. Once again, after being fitted in gear, their knowledgeable staff can help you plan your own route. Just tell them what your preferences are and they will make sure that you have a great tour in the vineyards. You can still pedal at your own pace, stopping at the wineries you have selected. They will also make sure that a catered box lunch is delivered to your choice winery for a private picnic and pick up your wine purchases for you. Now thats a perfect way to bike in wine country! For those that want to rent bikes and helmets for a few hours, its a great option. But once you start cycling, you will understand why more people opt for the tours. Welcome to
CALISTOGA
So
dents said Mark Mathewson, Sterling Vineyards Visitors Center Manager. Remarkably, we have fans that plan their summer getaways around our screening schedule. Bring friends and family to Sterling, watch a great movie over a glass of wine and benefit two local causes. Each screening offers wine tasting and festival seating on the Sterling Vineyard Meadow at Sterling Vineyards, 1111 Dunaweal Lane in Calistoga. All Sterling Silver Screen films are suitable for informed family viewing; however, parents are suggested to review MPAA advisories online in advance of attendance. The grounds open at 7 p.m. and guests are encouraged to arrive early, dress in layers and bring a blanket or low backed beach chairs to sit on. A pre-show of classic cartoons, followed by the feature presentation, begins at dusk. Admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children (under 16). All proceeds from tickets sales and a percentage of wine sales benefit the non-profit Stars & Vines Fund. More information is available online at www.sterlingvineyards.com, or by calling (707) 942-3322.

Sonoma County Cultivates New Events and Programs for Three-Day Harvest Fair
In its 37 years of showcasing the abundance of harvest and Sonoma Countys passion for world-class wines and the people who make them, the Harvest Fair has entertained, educated, and just plain delighted hundreds of thousands of people from Northern California, and around the globe. And for 2011, the fairs board has retooled key elements to enliven the festivities and give people even more reason to gather with friends at this premier event. Sonoma County Vintners. The new Wine Awards celebration creates an opportunity to honor our winemakers and growers, and salute their hard work and contributions to our community.
Unsurpassed Quality
The Harvest Fair is the largest regional wine competition in the United States, and celebrates Sonoma Countys heritage as a worldrenowned agricultural and wine-producing region. According to Comfort, Its the only event in California with a professional competition solely for the regions wines, judged by an international panel of experts. The three-day schedule is bursting with exciting activities for all ages. Along with the events mentioned above, there will be farm and harvest Ag-tivities for children and adults, wine seminars, chef demonstrations, microbrew tasting (Saturday only), continuous live jazz, an art show and sale, a kiddie carnival area, exhibitors hall, puppet show, farm animals, a bee-keeping display, apple tasting, and much more. In addition, attendees receive special case discounts at the Harvest Fair Marketplace on any of the gold medal-winning wines. People can also bring home a variety of locally made food products available at the newly expanded Marketplace. For information on how to purchase tickets for the Harvest Fair, visit www.harvestfair.org, or call (707) 545-4203.

from Mendocino, Albarino and Tempranillo from Lodi, his wines truly represent the best that the vines offer. Luse took his instruction from a rather unusual source. As he relates, My ninety year old Italian neighbor once told me after properly following his instructions for growing, Now you gonna have tomatoes! Respecting agricultural guidelines that generations of farmers have perfected is the cornerstone of his philosophy as a winemaker. A visit to the winerys tasting room in Glen Ellen enables visitors to enjoy both the stunning photography and magnificent wines of this renaissance artisan. Oversized prints of vineyard scenes dominate the tasting room and showcase the spectacular beauty of the wine country. But wine is not just an artist endeavor; it is

After multiple showings of their distinctively unique works, 14 members of the Photo Irregulars are now featured in a new exhibit at the Charles Creek Tasting Room and Gallery through September 30th, 2011. The Photo Irregulars started as a small group of friends who share a mutual love of photography. Today, they have grown into a larger group who get together to exchange information on technical and creative aspects of their art, encourage each other to produce active work and put together group shows. They chose Photo Irregulars as their name because of the diverse interests and styles of their individual members styles ranging from commercial and product photographers, portrait and wedding photographers, photojournalists and fine art photographers, environmental and architectural photographers, educators and students; some of whom specialize in black and white film, some in digital, some who prefer traditional darkroom printing, some who prefer high-end inkjet printing, some who explore alternative processes, some who explore mixed media, some who eschew digital photo enhancement, and some who embrace it. What they all have in common is a serious commitment to their art. Specializing in high-quality Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (as well as microscopic quantities of Pinot Grigio, Grenache, Sangiovese and Tempranillo) each from great vineyard sources, Charles Creek produces wines that are fruit driven, food friendly and easily paired with the courses of a meal. The winery tasting room is conveniently situated in a charming 1890s-era storefront on the historic Sonoma Plaza. In addition to wine tasting and sales, the tasting room also provides space to show the work of local artists. The Charles Creek Vineyard Tasting Room and Gallery, open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., is located at 483 First Street West, on the historic Plaza in downtown Sonoma. For more information, call (707) 935-3848 or email alan@charlescreek.com.
