Excel in Mind, Body and Character

George Mason High School Newsletter
Tyrone Q. Byrd, Principal June, 2011

Dear Mustang Parents & Guardians: It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end. Ursula Leguin Congratulations to the entire George Mason High School community for the completion of another outstanding school year. The 2010 -11 school year was filled with scholastic, artistic, and athletic success from beginning to end. We truly distinguished ourselves as a leader among schools, and I could not be more proud to be first servant of this amazing institution of learning. Earlier this week we celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2011. This group of exceptional young people continued the Mason tradition of excellence in Mind, Body, and Character and set the bar just slightly higher for future classes of talented and dedicated Mustangs. During our graduation ceremony School Board Chair, Joan Wodiska, challenged our graduates to live a life of service to others; our superintendent, Dr. Lois Berlin, reminded them of the opportunities they have before them; and our commencement speaker, former Secretary of the Army Mr. Pete Geren, encouraged our entire community to value integrity first, serve others, and achieve excellence in all we do. Daniel Drawbaugh, Anne Briggs, and Matthew Baker, Valedictory Scholars, vividly reminded us of how talented our students are with rousing speeches to their classmates. The bittersweet ceremony was also filled with performances from our amazing music and choral programs. Each speech, song, and musical piece raised our collective spirit and left us excited to welcome the next step in our lives as members of the global community. We will miss the class of 2011, but we eagerly look forward to the promise of the Classes of 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and our newly arrived Class of 2016. These classes are filled with inquiring and knowledgeable risk-takers. Principled, open-minded thinkers who seek balance and are caring, reflective communicators. Our teachers are steadfastly dedicated to provide each of our students with relevant, engaging, and challenging educational opportunities. The members of our outstanding counseling department are prepared to work collaboratively with our children and their parents to develop and implement a plan to successfully accomplish academic goals. We are confident that we can reach our long-term academic and social goals through careful attention to that very next step. The nature of our close-knit community compels us to rely on the contributions of each member. I challenge you to do your part and help us make George Mason the best that it can be as we collectively strive for Excellence in Mind, Body, and Character. Your child’s final report card for the 2010 - 11 school year will be mailed on Friday, June 24th. If your student took the writing and/or non-writing SOLs in the spring, their scores will be included. We are quite pleased with the preliminary reports of our students’ collective performance on the SOL battery of exams which show that again we have surpassed state accreditation targets. We are very proud of our students’ performance and the superb level of instruction they are receiving in the classroom. Have a great summer and please look for another letter from your partners at Mason some time in August. SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOUND IN THE REPORT CARD ENVELOPE: --Summer School Letter with Registration Form (if applicable) --New & Returning Registration Instructions w/SNAPCODE --Summer Reading List Sincerely, Tyrone Q.
