Pentecost Sunday
June 12, 2011 Prayer for a New Bishop
Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

There appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. -- Acts 2:3

Living the Good News

Pentecost Sunday, Year A
First Reading -- Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm -- Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading -- In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). Gospel -- Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23).

Reflexin

Gospel Reflection
THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase "compare and contrast" that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the Church. Let's contrast, then compare. Luke's account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John's account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty acts of God.

Discussion Questions for Gospel

Mission is a very important word. We sometimes connect this word to working in foreign countries, but that is not all it means. The sisters in some religious communities refer to their places of work as "going on their mission." The Latin ending of the Mass was, "Ite, missa est"?"Go, you are sent." Mission and Mass have the same Latin root of missa. Now we say, "Go in peace to love and serve the Lord." Loving and serving is what mission, being sent by Jesus, is all about. And we each have a mission in life. We are each sent by Jesus to do loving service right where we are. What do you believe Jesus is sending you to do in this time of your life? You might like to put it into words. "Jesus sends me forth to can you keep this sense of mission alive in you each day?

"Jess, envame a ____________".

Gifts of the Spirit

Saint Paul talks about "different kinds of spiritual gifts" and "different forms of service, but the same Lord" (1 Corinthians 12:4). Yet spiritual gifts and service can be mismatched. Think of John, head of the finance committee for fifteen years. He was a successful businessman, and he dominated the finance committee meetings. John's abilities needed a different challenge. The new pastor invited him to begin a "Welcome Home" ministry for lapsed Catholics. John has new energy and enthusiasm in matching his planning skills with hospitality. Alice disliked teaching parish religion class. Chatting with another teacher, Alice said she had just arranged her third daughter's wedding. Her friend sympathized with all the hard work. Alice said, "Oh no, I just love weddings!" Alice now leads the parish wedding coordinators and enjoys the work very much. The spiritual lives of John and Alice are enriched because their service matches their abilities, and that service is adding new strength to their parish community.

Living Stewardship

"When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic, and faithful, and you will accomplish your object." --Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), American poet and essayist

S activo, energtico y fiel, y cumplirs tu cometido". --Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), poeta y ensayista estadounidense
