breed on Little Barrier Island (Hauturu)
and Great Barrier Island (Aotea Island).
The Black Petrel is the smallest memeber
of the Procellaria breed and is known to
be rather difficult to identify. The bird
is medium-sized, stocky, uniformly dark
petrel that is very similar to both Westland
Petrel and Flesh-footed Shearwater. In fresh
plumage, the paler underside of the tips of
the wings contrast with darker, less reflective
underwing coverts. The bill is the giveaway
when identifying the Black Petrel. The Black
Petrel has a dark tip to the bill, while the
bird’s bill plates are a yellowish brown.
