Monterey, CA: Centenarian's Tell Their Secrets To A Long Life: View From A Private Duty Caregiver

Our local paper, Off 68 (which serves the Highway 68 Corridor of Monterey Count), had a cute story in the
May 13 issue about a 100-year old woman who celebrated her birthday at the Landing Zone Restaurant
at the Salinas Municipal Airport. Eileen Rhyner hit the 100-year mark in May, and Noreen Vincenz, who
celebrated her 100th birthday last November was one of the guests. Rhyner celebrated her birthday with
a bacon burger and curly fries. "We should all look so good for their age," said Theresa Giottonini, a 95-
year old guest at the birthday bash. Thyner and Vincenz met many, many years ago at the Corral de
Tierra Grange, an organization that supports family farming. Rhyner shared memories of churning their
own butter and hunting game at will. Fresh venison was often on the table. Deer still run wild here in vast
numbers, but shooting them is a big no no in current times. Both of the 100-year olds live very active
lives, and they both cited activity as being a key to longevity. I agree whole heartedly. At Family inHome
Caregiving of Monterey we provide seniors with a vast array of activities to keep their mind and body
active. This, along with good nutrition (although a nice bacon cheese burger is a must once in a while)
keep the elderly healthy and happy. Social stimulation is another key. Many seniors, particularly those
who have recently lost a spouse or don't have a lot of family nearby, become isolated and don't get out of
the house much. It's a function of being in a safe place and not having to worry about much, but it can be
dangerous because without exercise the muscles can become atrophied, and without social interaction,
memories begin to fade and seniors aren't as sharp. Most of my Clients are in their 90's although one of
our newer ones is a 104 year old gentleman who keeps in shape by having a personal trainer come in
and work with him. Bravo to the old in years but the young at heart.

About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:

After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family
member Richard Kuehn was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. He became
convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to the elderly and founded
Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula. Please visit my blog where I talk about
important senior issues at:
