Defensive Line-is not. a position, but a way of life, 'We must be the foundation on which our defense is built. We must have a warrior's mentality-thatmeans once we step 'onto the-field, wearegoing to relentlessly attack our opponents for 60 minutes and take no prisoners. Just as Samurai Warriors we will hone our skills daily both mentally and physicaJly, we will attack the offense in waves and not give them a chance to catch their breath. We must continue to build our strength and 'stamina so that no matter what we can always; always GO! To a man we must have a sense of camaraderie. and pride that is built thru working and striving together. We' must develop

. a focus that is impervious to distractions whether it be class, practice or . during a game. We must have a trust in ourselves and in each other that cannot be shaken by any outside influence what so ever. We will play smart, physical, aggressive. and. uninhibited football. Each man that steps on the field will play to a .standard of excellence So that there win never be a drop off in intensity or competitiveness; and because of our bond there

, should be absolutely no (ear offailure. We are-in this together always and we live for the battle, and thrive on the competition and the chance to test"

. ourselves every game, every practice, everyday. We hate failure, but we never fear it! And because of this we can acceptany challenge with . enthusiasm and contidencei

NO FEAR

As a Defensive Line we first 'and foremost are dedicated to stopping the run:

We must take it personal when teams try to run theball on us. We must take care of our minimum assignment (First things first!). Wemust be sharp and disciplined in all our assignments and techniques, and then we can unleash a violent, physical brand of football that will demoralize an offense. By being disciplined and delaying ourgratiflcation we will get ahead of the downs

and put the offense into situations that they don't want to be in, namelyJ'"

and long And then w,e can truly enjoy unleashing all the weapons at

our disposal to try and destroy public enemy # 1 .... il• The Quarterback. He. will face a wave of relentless; skilled pass rushers like he has never seen.

DEFENSIVE LiNE ' .

Pass Rush Philosophy

. Our philosophy of rushing the passer is based on taking care of business; 1 st (~)

things 1 st, which means stopping the run. We cannot excel at both run and .'

pass ·equally well at the same time. We can however dominate early and get

ahead .of the downs and then. unleash a furious pass rush. We call this

delayed gratification; do the dirty work early on run downs and convert to pa,ss,ifnecessary.· Once we get them in obvious passing situations, we can

. unleash hell.

We have many objectives as a Defensive Line when it comes to rushing the' passer:

)

1. Sack the Ql3.

2. Divert his attention (Hurry his throw).

3. Batted Ball.

4. Force abad throw.

5. Force' him to run (Then punish him).

6. Disrupt his timing.

7. Force turnover (Interception/fumble).

8. Demoralize him with constant pressure and hits.

9. Change momentum. ,;

Methods of Pass Rush

Our method of rushing the passer is directly linked to first stuffing the running game, if we are able to do this we can create more predictable passing situations and work from. a position of strength .. Once we have teams in obvious pass situations we can then. get into predetemrined pass

.. rush mode (Garnes) or co1or rushes, 'The way we rush both as a unit and individually will depend on many factors:

1. Down & Distance

2. Formation

3; Field Position

4. Offensive Personnel

5. Stance/Splits/Pass .set of OL (Set Line)

6. Score

7. Time' left in a game

:'

,. "

We will use different combinations of speed, power and finesse to defeat

~--' blockers and the different protections we will face. We will then go thrua

-progression of identifying visual keys_(Launch Point), movement/react to blocker ana then play fast and physical.on contact. . '

STANCE & ALIGNMENT

Stance:

This is where it all' begins for our Defensive Line .. A .great stance allows us to play violent, uninhibited football with power, '. quickness and explosion. As 'a- Defensive Line we will often be playing in confined areas of extreme violence. Because of this we must be focused and 'disciplined at all times. By using the tools at our disposal, l~t-Step, 2 feet in tbeground, targetiDg,vioJent hands, and proper alignment, we will be able to effectively destroy any and all run blocks that the offense may attempt on us. The ability to control the Line of Scrimmage and dominate the

. Offensive Line all begins with a great stance. This is something that we will work on everyday. A great stance is the key to opening the box that holds our tools of destruction, and we will use these tools in our quest to become the best Defensive Line in the country."

Points of Emphasis

1. Balanced with the ability to go in any direction;

. 2. Good weight distribution (Avoid too much 'weight forward/sitting back),

3. Flat Back

4. Eyes Up

s. Cobra Demeanor (Ready to make a precision strike)

Alignment:

::.,'.

We .must be lined up correctly; this is 'part of our minimum assignment. Knowledge of OU~ alignments and assignments are part of our mental discipline, it requires great study habits, film study and note taking.iThis will allow us to take advantage of weaknesses in offensive schemes as. well as allow us to utilize different power angles to aid us in destroying blocks and wreaking havoc in the Offensive Backfield ..

BLOCKING' SYSTEMS .' &

DEFEATING BLOCKS

BloCking Systems:

On the Defensive Line we will face various blocking schemes aimed at disrupting-us at the L.O.S. and creating seams and holes in our front We will be aware of these different systems and have answers for all of them arid the tools to make them ineffective.

Types of Systems:

1. Basfc- Targets the core 7

2. Basic Lead- Targets the 8th defender

3. Insert- Blocks 7 man surface (Block Back with. 1 st uncovered)

")

J

._._ .....

4. Angle- Block 7 man surface; DownBlocks and bring ablocker

around (Pull) t' . .

Defeatioe Blocks:

The art of Defeating Blocks and destroying blockers is essential to our livelihood as Defensive Lineman, We will use all the tools at our disposal to get.thisaccomplished, Starting with proper stance and alignment and move to our 1 sr step (Minimum assignment) and our progression of face & fist, eyes &: targeting. and assignment and technique. We will use precision strikes to alter or destroy the "angles of departure" of the Offensive Lineman. We will use correct steps, body position, and violence to disrupt the power producing angles of the Offensive Lineman.

When we are able to get. the .O-Lines power angles

. segmented, we have destroyed his leverage and enhanced

. ours, now we can separate, escape, and hunt! down the ball . carrier and fmish him off with a violent action. (Throw.
