IIT Kharagpur is the only IIT in India pursuing an active
research programme in design and development in Farm
Power and Machinery, spanning the broad areas of
Design Theory and Methodology, Human Factors in
Design, Tillage and Traction, Offroad Vehicle Design,
Simulation and Testing. It has well established Farm
Machinery Design and Testing Facilities to cater to the
needs of Farm Machinery and Tractor manufacturing
industries and has an active laison with the industry in
R&D. The core competency of the Department lies in the
successful amalgamation of research and design,
Department firmly believes that product designers and
design researchers are complementary to each other
while designers create products to improve work
environment and economy of the society, design
researchers develop effective design methods and
techniques for betterment ofthe design
M.Tech programme in Farm Machinery and Power
creates professionals with a meticulous knovledge in
Tractor systems and Agricultural machinery: These
candidates have sound fundamental concepts of Tractor
systems design, Agricultural machinery, Power sources
and Ergonomic considerations and are highly capable to
tackle real-world problems in laboratory and field
conditions
‘The innovative ideas ofthe students coupled with proper
Inowledge of cutting edge technologies such as modern
instrumentation and simulation modeling enable them to
address the challenges faced by the agricultural sector in
general and tractor and machinery companies in
particular,
The students carry out a research project of one year
duration, The research project is rigorously evaluated
through satisfactory production of a thesis and several
seminars. The list of projects undertaken by the current
batch of M.tech (FMP) students is given atthe end of this
brochure.
