o matter what your background or beliefs, December has a way of reminding us that we are all human beings who appreciate being connected to others. With December’s limited daylight hours (the fewest of the year in the Northern Hemisphere) and the weather turning just wintery enough, this month has our Gulf Coast bones craving hot chocolate by the fire and homemade soup on the stove. The lack of warmth outdoors sends us looking for warmth indoors and in our hearts. Sweater weather brings a perfect storm of social energy that fuels festive occasions. Hosting holiday get-togethers and accommodating a houseful of relatives can push your kitchen and bathrooms to their limits. That’s one reason for our annual Kitchen & Bath Issue. While you’ve been gathering friends and relatives, we’ve been gathering the latest ideas and insights for updating and improving the look and function of these workhorse rooms. Efficiency is where it’s at in the kitchen. From conserving gas, electricity and water to streamlining food prep and clean-up efforts, smart choices make all the difference. Strategies such as reworking a layout, investing in new appliances, upgrading cabinets and countertops can help a kitchen work for you rather than against you. Bathrooms function better when carefully planned. Whether utilized for a prework shower/shave/skedaddle routine or for weekend pampering, specialized fixtures, faucets and floorplans can do wonders for a bath’s performance.

You’ll find major kitchen and bath improvements in our home feature this month. Lafayette, La. residents Natalie and Steve Schorr’s midtown loft is a fantastic example of how expert planning can turn a basic space into a rockin’, yet relaxing environment. I admit I was a bit stunned to see this Louisiana lady’s first email about the transformation of this loft. After speaking with Natalie by phone and hearing the enthusiasm in her voice, I knew her place would be something special. I think you’ll agree that she and Steve have created a knock-out urban escape. As you catch up and cut up with friends and relatives throughout December, it’s quite likely you’ll find yourself standing in a kitchen. We hope our Kitchen & Bath Issue inspires improvements that will make gatherings at your house less stressful and more enjoyable. Wishing you all peace and prosperity this holiday season.

Budget friendly Bath Redo

BY JOETTA MOULDEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

When I first saw Susan Rainbolt’s master bathroom, all that caught my eye was the incredibly busy wallpaper. The dated brass builder-grade shower enclosure with its mismatched chrome faucet set (repeated on the sinks), blue window treatments and lack of hardware on the cabinets made this a room feel like a time warp.
Susan had utilized my expertise with her kitchen remodel and wanted to keep her costs down with this bathroom remodel. She had lived in the house eight years, and since she was planning to sell soon, she needed my advice on updating the bath for resale—on a $9K budget. Susan wanted to enjoy the bath before she sold the house and not just fix it up for the buyer. I recommended she get bids from a few contractors and she chose Abiel Garza Fernandez from Rainbow

Contracting, who had also done her kitchen remodel. Obviously, the first step was simply to remove the wallpaper, condition and paint the walls in this ensuite bedroom and bath the same color as the master bedroom (Benjamin Moore “Dry Sage”).

tip>

When selling, do the work for the buyer and go ahead and remove the wallpaper and paint the walls. I always ask clients--what is the first thing you change when you buy a house? The wallpaper!

To save money, I advised Susan that she could consider keeping the vanity cabinet and original tile flooring (and buy an inexpensive rug to cover most of the floor). By splurging on a granite countertop and frameless glass shower enclosure and saving by keeping the existing, already-paid-for tile in the shower and floor, Susan got a lot of bang for her buck and really stretched her budget. I also suggested she add the same oil-rubbed-bronze knobs and bin pull hardware that she had used in her kitchen, which was featured in this column in Houston House & Home, May, 2010. Susan found the new cabinet hardware at Target and Lowe’s. “Keeping the original floor and cabinets were real money savers,” Susan noted, “and the rest of your suggestions turned this bath into a ‘silk purse’’, she smiled. Susan was unsure that the bath would look that much different with the same vanity cabinet and flooring. After looking at my emailed photos, she ‘got it’. “ I am a visual person, and if I wasn’t familiar with a term or idea, seeing an example was priceless,” Susan explained. “Your list kept me focused on the budget and I knew your experience with other remodels would be right on target,” she added. Susan was not thrilled with keeping the original floor tile and vanity, but she did not have any leftover floor tile and removing the old cabinet could have meant a change in flooring, which would have exceeded her budget. She kept hearing my mantra, “ if it’s paid for, let’s try to make it work”, in her head, which kept her focused and avoided “over-improving” the room.

When selling your house, pare down knickknacks and personal items so buyers can see themselves in your home. But this does not mean having empty rooms without art or accessories. Susan used an l880’s French mannequin and 40’s oil painting from Ebay to add punch to the tub area and a dramatic Jenny Lind spool chair adds drama to the recycled vanity. A new area rug from Pier 1 Imports dresses the floor and a 19thcentury bronze Victorian mirror and new Ebay garden cloche atop a

OPPOSITE: AFTER: Cabinet hardware is “jewelry” and adds style to the existing cabinets. A new granite countertop contrasts with the existing floor tile. BEFORE: Builder-grade four-inch-on-center faucet sets, a lack of hardware on the vanity and a boring white countertop were spoiling this room’s potential.

AFTER: Wallpaper removal and paint, a new frameless shower surround from Lonestar Glass, new bath and sink fixtures and plantation shutters that match the rest of windows in house updated this master bath on a budget. Antique accessories add the personality. BEFORE: Busy wallpaper, a dated brass shower surround, mismatched metals and colorful window treatments made this bath stuck in another time period.

TRADE SECRETS
• When possible, work with and retain already-paid-for expensive items like vanity cabinets and tile flooring. • Hiring a professional saves very costly mistakes (which effect resale later) and insures a successful outcome of your bathroomremodeling project. • Regrouting existing tile makes it look brand new. • Do paint the under side of the fur down and slanted walls, too, which are NOT the ceiling. (The flat area is the actual “ceiling”.) • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to add square footage onto your house, but to first rethink the space under roof that is already paid for.

stone rabbit dresses the countertop. On the tub surround, Susan bought a large blue American Shaker pantry box from Ebay and after studying the box, she purchased new papier mache boxes from Michaels and painted and aged them with stain and a light sanding to look “old”—a cheap trick we are sharing with you!

To save money, Susan’s contractor suggested regrouting the shower tile to match the new, removable tile tub surround, as well as the floor tile, which worked beautifully and made the room feel fresh and new. (The new tile tub surround serves as a removable access panel for the tub’s plumbing.) New, oil- rubbed- bronze plumbing fixtures bought online from www.faucetsdirect.com match those installed in the other wet rooms plus the hardware in the house.

tip>

For a professional look, be consistent with window treatments, hardware and plumbing fixtures from room to room in your home.

AFTER: Matching white tile from Lowe’s to the shower tile on the removable tub surround properly finishes the tub and is so much more practical than the busy wallpaper.

Susan actually came in under her budget and finished the project in two weeks. The result? Once she put her house on the market she sold it in less than a month. “Based on the many complements from visitors, potential buyers and my Realtor, I’d say your project ideas were perfect,” Susan noted. “Most of the homes in this subdivision have not updated their kitchens and baths, so remodeling these rooms made my house a stand out and helped with a shorter marketing time.”

INSPIRED Kitchen Appliances
By DEBI BRYANT

Smart, sleek, fun — you can have it all with today’s kitchen appliances

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: GE Profile™ SmartDispense™ dishwasher offers a steam option for a deeper clean. The GE Café series is restaurant-inspired and offers a professional look. GE recently unveiled its first HFC-free household refrigerator as part of its Monogram line. Though GE is awaiting hydrocarbon refrigerant approval from the EPA, it should be on the market in the near future. It is fully integrated and customizable with a convertible drawer.

Even as homeowners continue to downsize, kitchens consume a larger percentage of the overall floor plan. "The kitchen has become the new living
space, and it's expanding in both size and comfort to accommodate everyday life and entertaining," says Marc Hottenroth, manager of GE Appliance's Industrial Design Organization. "The attention to detail that once went into the selection of the leather sofa, plasma television, and Oriental rug in your family room is now going into the selection of appliances, countertops and accent lighting." NATURAL SELECTION Charles McHenry, vice president at Acceptance Appliances Centers, says, “With dishwashers, our customers are concerned about the amount of water used and how well it cleans.” GE now features a dishwasher option called SmartDispense™, a steam pre-wash that eliminates the need for rinsing and soaking before loading. It also stores the contents of a 47-ounce bottle of liquid or gel detergent and then economically dispenses the detergent based on water hardness, cycle selection, and soil in the load. McHenry also points out the improved functionality of GE refrigerators. Their solid cabinet construction eliminates lines and joints, thus providing better insulation. Also the ENERGY STAR compressors are more efficient and require less energy to operate. In the area of style, GE offers three fully-realized brands: the more professional look of GE Monogram, the sleek and contemporary lines of GE Profile, and the restaurant-inspired appearance of GE Café.

ITALIAN ELEGANCE
Bertazzoni Professional Series offers eight colors options, with coordinating stainless steel vent hood and backsplash available. The burners are designed for clean combustion with low carbon monoxide emissions. This means that pots are placed closer to the flame, giving a shorter time to reach boiling and reduced gas consumption while cooking. This in the Southside Place loft kitchen designed by Tokerud & Co. features a Bertazzoni Professional Series 36” Gas Range and is available with an electric self-cleaning oven has nine functions, from convection, baking and roasting to warming. The quadruple-glass door minimizes heat loss. The Big Chill appliances offer that 50s flashback with modern functionality and efficiency. Choose from eight standard colors or more than 190 custom colors. The Big Chill appliances are available in Houston through Brass Maiden.

Available in the U.S. since 2005, Bertazzoni ranges offer a marriage of engineering and artistic design – that balance of style and performance that works beautifully. This is most obvious with Bertazzoni’s brilliant color options, such as red, yellow, blue, green and burgundy. “The range is the centerpiece of the kitchen, says Paulo Bertazzoni, CEO of Bertazzoni. “We have addressed the need for a bold statement in the kitchen. This is enhanced by the paint finish, which is inspired by Italian sports cars. Our goal is for the design to be elegant and a pleasure for the eye - a tribute to Italian style.” RETRO RE-DO Are you in love with mid-century modern? Then consider the refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers from Big Chill. Eye-catching in all your favorite colors from the 50s—orange, cherry red, pink lemonade—these appliances are new bodies retrofitted with vintage exteriors. Or as Daphne Scarbrough, owner of The Brass Maiden, says, “It’s the new encased in the old.” For instance, the refrigerator has an up-to-date Whirlpool interior, which is important because it is easy to maintain and get worked on if anything goes wrong. ENERGY STAR features are also available. All of this functionality is wrapped up in authentic chrome trim and a stamped metal body, giving you the mid-century pop and verve.

Most people don’t think of generators as kitchen appliances—unless the memories of hurricanes past and being without electricity for days (weeks?) are still fresh. The American Red Cross suggests that permanently-installed stationary generators are better suited for providing backup power to the home than portable generators since an automatic standby generator senses an outage and responds immediately. No extension cords to plug in, no gas tanks to fill, no switches to flip. To this end, Generac has introduced its CorePower™ System, an affordable automatic standby solution starting at $1799. “The new seven kilowatt (kW) CorePower System consists of a generator and transfer switch conveniently packaged together at a price point significantly less than any other automatic standby generator and switch combination on the market. Its compact design is engineered for easy maintenance and serviceability,” says Jake Thomas, Generac product manager.

Broan’s compact QP3 EVOLUTION Range Hood features a diswasher-safe mesh filter and halogen lighting. Broan products are available in Houston at Gulf & Basco.

IN THE HOOD For range hoods, Karen Collins, marketing and communication manager at BroanNuTone, tells us that in the thousands of homeowner interviews conducted by Broan, the most prized features are style, quietness, ease of cleaning and good lighting. Broan offers a variety of hoods that fit with any homeowner’s preference, style and budget. Its pro-style Elite is professional looking and features an innovative filter that combines mesh and baffles to quickly pull away heat and odors while still being easy to clean. Broan’s Evolution™ line, that ranges from about $200-$400, comes with a seamless design for easy cleaning, a mesh filter that is dishwasher-safe, and four halogen lights. Adding or replacing a range hood is a great way to update the kitchen, enhance your kitchen’s environment and improve your indoor air quality. Plus, replacing a hood is an easy Saturday afternoon project for the average DIY-er, according to Collins. THE EXTRAS If you’re a purist about ice (and who in the iced-tea-loving South doesn’t have opinions about ice?), Scotsman has introduced a collection of residential ice machines called Brilliance. Perfect for the kitchen, wet bar or outdoor kitchen, these 15-inch under-counter models produce ice that enhances the quality of any cold drink. Brilliance icemakers are available at Gulf & Basco. For the coffee crowd, Thermador offers a built-in coffee machine with steam wand. Finished in sleek stainless, this machine has eight custom settings, six strength levels and 12 cup sizes so each family member can have it their way.

Use LIGHTING and HARDWARE to finish off your kitchen and bath projects

Looking for that final exclamation point on your kitchen or bathroom project? Then take a look at what the creative use of hardware and lighting can do.
A HARD LOOK According to Thomas Dunmire, vice president and general manager of Cornerstone Hardware, manufacturers have recently applied a lot of attention to functional hardware. Soft-close hardware and drawer slides are all about precision—quiet, smooth and clean precision. “They really affect the feel of cabinetry. The soft-close is a dampener mechanism that catches a door or drawer before it fully closes and pulls it gently closed, preventing it from slamming. You’ll see the under-mount drawer slides used especially with high-end projects. The hardware is concealed so that you only see the beautiful carpentry,” says Dunmire. Another trend of Dunmire’s clients is a preference for the “no-hardware” look where all hardware is completely hidden from sight. You simply push on the drawers and doors lightly to open them. “It creates very clean lines, which work especially well with contemporary designs,” he says. For hardware in the bath that’s a little showier, and wonderfully luxuriant, consider the Vola built-in towel warmer from Hastings Tile & Bath. Available in chrome, brushed chrome and stainless steel, the modular system allows any number of bars to be arranged in almost any position with a completely hidden heating unit. If you are outfitting your bathroom to age in place, there’s no need to give up style. Jaclo offers a series of designer grab bars and handles for the bath in a wide variety of styles and finishes. A LIGHT TOUCH The inspired use of light has been a significant trend in 2010. In the kitchen, for example, homeowners are using overhead can lighting with accent lights to create dramatic effects and interesting design elements. “We’ve seen a big transition from halogen and fluorescent lights to LED lights. LEDs reduce heat, reduce electrical usage and have really come down in price,” says Dunmire. Plus, LEDs are available in warm or cool colors. From the opulent to the understated, modern to traditional, today’s light fixtures for the kitchen and bath create just the

Troy Lighting’s Barrett Collection makes a strong statement over a kitchen island with geometric wrought iron against a sturdy white shade.

Troy’s French-inspired Roxbury sconces, featuring wrought iron over glass cylinders, illuminate a bath with plenty of panache.

Seeing the Light
“Lighting in a home is of utmost importance, particularly in high-end projects where architectural and interior details mean everything,” says Wayne Falk, vice president of sales at The Littman Group. “The value of the home should be reflected in the lighting fixtures. Lighting sets the mood for a home. For those considering style relative to the overall space-design in their purchase, lighting becomes very important. I firmly believe that proper lighting can help sell a home.” One lighting technique Falk suggests is layering. “Homeowners may want general lighting and then layer on some task lighting. An example of this can be found in the kitchen: one might opt to have under cabinet lighting in conjunction with general recessed lighting, and may include some decorative lighting such as pendants over a dining or nook area to add character and ambiance,” he says.

ambiance you want. Manufacturers like Corbett Lighting use unique materials, such as Japanese paper and bias-cut crystals, to craft memorable products. For example, Corbett’s Shoji design, with its handmade Japanese paper and hand-tooled iron in a bonsai bronze finish, produces a textured ambient light that provides the perfect Zen touch. The Vertigo, in a sconce or pendant style, is an asymmetrical swirl of bronze and gold leaf finish, perfect for a more modern decor. For those people in the midst of a preservation project, check out Hudson Valley’s Williamsburg Collection. Using historic Williamsburg as its inspiration, they have designed a collection of light fixtures that evoke that era while still using today’s technology. The Chesapeake sconce, for instance, showcases a delicate shell design finished in old bronze with two shaded lamps. As for task lighting, think of them as fixtures with purpose. They help you perform better—say, applying make-up at the mirror or chopping vegetables in the kitchen. And the very best designed task lighting also provides additional aesthetics, even helping to define a room. The Eco-Downlight Adjustable LED from CSL (Creative Systems Lighting) is one such light. It can be positioned perfectly for your task, creates accents and moods, and earns high marks for being “green.” Speaking of being smart, you can use creative lighting to save money. "Layering light and adding decorative task or accent lighting in the kitchen is a great way to highlight design features without dishing out the dough,” says Kathleen Sterio, general manager of consumer marketing for GE Lighting. Specialty bulbs, such as the GE Reveal, take any room from ordinary to extraordinary, by filtering dull yellow rays to produce clean, brilliant light. Now offered in a more energy efficient model, the GE Reveal CFL offers the same design benefits with less environmental impact. The CFL lasts up to eight times as long as incandescent bulbs and uses 75 percent less energy.

A midtown loft provides a Louisiana couple with a big city getaway

Story By SANDRA COOK | Photos by MIRO DVORSCAK

ABOVE: Natalie Schoor created a design plan for the living room around one white recliner from Adison Norland Contemporary Furniture in Lafayette, LA. Steve Schorr wanted a recliner that was positioned so he could enjoy the Houston skyline and watch football at the same time. Other design touches include a deep shag carpet and low-profile mirrored coffee table. Tall floor lamps with elongated shades eliminate the need for end tables. The simple-line sofa is small-scaled and features Michael Kors lavender silk pillows. LEFT: Stunning downtown view from the Schorrs’ balcony.

Lafayette, LA residents Natalie & Steve Schorr dreamed of a place where they could get away for long weekends that would offer a change of scenery and pace. While many of their friends have beach houses or lake cabins, the Schorrs wanted a big city experience for their R & R. “Steve and I often think about where we want to spend our retirement and I always had this idea of a fantastic loft in New York City,” says Natalie Schorr. “With the housing market taking a turn that benefits a buyer/investor, we felt that the timing may be right to consider a purchase. Houston is an easy drive and ultimately we really wanted to stay in the south.”
33

ABOVE & LEFT: The kitchen and dining area is sleek and contemporary. Stand-out features include the Equator marble island countertop installed by David Gardner of Canyon Marble and Granite, counter-depth cabinets by Siematic with a hidden, integrated Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer drawers, hidden double-drawer dishwasher by Fisher and Paykal, and the Viking stovetop and oven, hidden below.

So Natalie, with her fantasy loft in mind, got online and started researching lofts for sale. Dreaming of ultra-high ceilings, industrial concrete and brick with stunning views of the downtown skyline, Natalie found her ideal two-bedroom, two-bath loft very quickly. “What is so amazing is that I found The Rise with the absolute first search,” says Natalie. She immediately made an appointment with the listing agent, who showed her the loft and everything else the property had to offer. “I was hooked,” raves Natalie. “It was exactly what I had envisioned. Not only was the space itself perfect, but the fantastic vibe of Midtown and everything it offers was the icing on the cake! I remember telling my husband, ‘There are no negatives. It is perfect!’ I bought the property without him ever seeing it,” says Natalie.

QUICK ACTION The Schorrs quickly and easily rented the apartment to a tenant, who loved the place, but had to move out just six months later. At that point Natalie’s creative energies for renovating the loft took off and never slowed down. The existing kitchen felt awkward and didn’t take advantage of the dramatic skyline views through the expanse of 18-foot windows. The bulk of the original kitchen had been oriented toward the walls and a massive concrete column, which blocked the sightlines into the living area and the fantastic city view. The kitchen needed to be reinvented to become a fabulous and functional heart of the space. “It had to be fantastic,” says Natalie. “I wanted a sleek space where you could not even perceive where the fridge or dishwasher might be located. I did not want to see any clutter.”

ABOVE: The dining area was limited on space, so Natalie opted for an elongated Indonesian hardwood tabletop, bench seating and two end chairs. The table top was cut and reshaped by Gary Thibodeaux of Classic Cabinets and Furniture in Lafayette, LA. BELOW: The master bathroom kept its same footprint but was reconfigured. The shower was moved to the far end of the room, and a closet was added. The vanity features Aran cabinetry with pillow-puff doors and an Equator marble top. Marble and wall tiles are from Walker Zanger. Artwork is by Natalie.

As an admirer of the marvelously minimalist German styling of Siematic kitchen components, Natalie consulted with kitchen designers Micqui McGowen and Tiffany Edwards of Kitchen & Bath Concepts, located in the Houston Design Center. “We discussed the vision of reconfiguring the kitchen to maximize the amazing views,” says Natalie. “The timing was interesting because I learned that Siematic never discounts their product, but they were briefly offering a discount for the US market only. Being the prudent shopper that I pride myself on being, that was music to my ears! One catch: We had to create the design in four days to make the deadline for the price break! Tiffany Edwards, the kitchen designer, is amazing! The fact that we pulled all of this off together in a matter of days is still unbelievable. I found a great source for the appliances (which we had to have in order to create the specifications for the cabinets) and she worked diligently on the drawings. I think we made a great team – it was fun!” Natalie originally envisioned Quartz counter surfaces, but a trip to Walker Zanger made it clear that one marvelous marble was the way to go. “I was immediately convinced of this Equator marble, says Natalie. “Admittedly, it’s not the best choice for a kitchen. That marble, she’s a little devil. She looks beautiful but she will scratch you! The downside is that we have to be very careful, more careful than one would like to be in a kitchen, because it will scratch. I think I will just call it ‘character’!” Natalie was initially focused on the kitchen, but knew she wanted to tackle the entire apartment swiftly, so it wouldn’t drag on and on. “I didn’t want this to be an on-going project every time we came to town,” says Natalie. So she hired Cameron Hefty of Dallas-based Proformance Systems to manage the project in her absence. The entire process took just four months. COOL & CONTEMPORARY DECOR Without letting her husband or three daughters see the work in progress, Natalie pressed on to complete her sleek and chic dream loft. “I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and go for a grey color palette,” says. “I chose white, grey, lavender, and a touch of my old staple — black.” Natalie didn’t want to overfill the loft with too much furniture or overdo it with busy patterns. Husband Steve was happy to let Natalie make all the decisions on the décor, but his one request was to have a recliner for enjoying both the skyline view and football on the flat screen. A contemporary white leather recliner solidly anchors the living room without distracting the eye from the view. Following her keep-it-simple approach, Natalie let the industrial elements provide the drama. The red brick wall,

hefty concrete columns and double-height windows give the space literally tons of loft character, so she chose furnishings that are uncomplicated, yet elegant. IDEAL CITY ESCAPE Some of Natalie’s favorite things about the space include the stunning marble in the kitchen and Steve’s shared appreciation of the space. “I love the Equator marble and how David Gardner was so attentive to how the edges lined up,” says Natalie. “As dysfunctional as it is, it is beautiful! And I love the fact that Steve enjoys coming here and relaxing in the one thing he asked for — that recliner!” “Most of our friends in Lafayette have either hunting or fishing camps,” says Natalie. “We liked the idea of a cool big-city vibe where you can walk to restaurants and bars, enjoy the offerings of a bigger city, not to mention a place where you can just shut the door and leave when you are ready to head back home. We needed a getaway from our norm and have made a whole new set of friends in Midtown. This has been a very good decision for my family! Our ‘camp’ is in Houston!”

Simple steps for better looking bathroom mirrors

before
Do your bathrooms suffer from having plain, drab, builder-grade mirrors?
Good news! There is hope for even the most helpless of mirrors. And whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or would rather hire a professional, it is surprisingly affordable to achieve stylish mirrors, even on a shoestring budget. One simple trick is to update the look of the entire bath with framed mirrors. Here are some popular options. 2. WOOD TRIM 1. REMOVE & REPLACE This is especially easy if your mirrors are not glued, and the walls are painted behind the mirrors. If this describes your bath, this might be the option for you. Simply unscrew the plastic clips that fasten the mirror to the wall and (with a friend’s help) carefully remove the mirror off the wall. Choosing the ideal framed mirror can be One especially cost-effective way to spruce up your mirrors is to use wooden architectural trim to frame them. Trim purchased from your local home improvement store can be painted or stained to suit your tastes, and simply glued onto the edge of the mirrors. While this is a fairly simple job for the weekend do-it-yourselfer, it is also something a trusted trim carpenter can do. challenging. A few tips for selecting new mirrors: • Compliment your home’s décor with a similar frame (Traditional, Contemporary, Transitional) • Match hardware finishes with the color of the frame (Oil-rubbed bronze, brushed nickel, etc.) • Choose a frame that has ample contrast against the wall (darker frames on lighter wall and vice versa) 3. MIRROR FRAMING PROFESSIONAL For the non do-it-yourselfer who doesn’t have tremendous amount of time, but wants a beautiful and cost-effective solution, consider a local company that specializes in this service. A professional can frame bathroom mirrors without tearing them out. Offering a full-service approach, Mirror Makeover starts with an in-home design consultation. After taking measurements during the initial visit, Mirror Makeover then builds the frames offsite in their North Houston facility. A few weeks later, the finished frames are professionally installed onto the existing mirrors, usually in less than an hour.

For more information on Mirror Makeover, visit www.MirrorMakeover.com, or call 281.586.7785.

KITCHEN+BATH Planning Guide

WORKBOOK
Good planning makes for a great kitchen or bath.
Take the time to decide what you want, hire a professional who has experience and training in kitchen and bath design, determine a budget and go for it. Use this workbook to help you narrow your choices, and then give it to your designer or contractor so they can help you turn your dreams and ideas into reality. DECIDE YOUR GOALS Why do you want to remodel your home? Number your reasons in order of importance, with 1 being most important, 13 being least. I need more space for storage I have plenty of space but it’s inefficiently arranged. I need more lighting/windows. I’ve never liked my countertops and want new ones. A major appliance/fixture is broken, so I may as well go ahead and redo the whole room. My family is growing with more children/grandchildren and I want space for them. The flooring is cracked/warped/ peeling, and I need a new floor. My health status has changed, and I need everything more accessible. l have pets and want a place to feed them and keep their pet food handy. I need more wiring for electrical appliances. I’m a techie and would like my kitchen to have wi-fi and maybe even a flat-screen TV. It looks dated, I’m tired of it, and I simply want to change the look of the room. Other reason: _______________ What, if anything, would you like to keep? Determine your priorities so you know where to spend your money. What are your must-haves in the room? What can you live without? If you’re seeking a home equity loan for the remodel, don’t close on the loan until you know how much the entire project is going to cost.

pet of the month
Hi, I’m Purdee. That’s right, my
previous owners had an interesting knack for names. I recommend you use a “Suuthun” dialect to pronounce it correctly. Like another southerner, writer David Sedaris, I have a story to tell. At only two years old, I’ve seen my fair share of de hauts et de bas in my life. After what seemed like an eternity (in dog years), the ultra-caring folks at the Houston SPCA rescued me from a pretty bad situation. I don’t want to get into it right now, but let’s just say I am grateful to be starting a new chapter. I’m looking forward to having a permanent home and a laid-back owner. Although I may seem timid at first, I warm up quickly whenever there’s a lap and a good book nearby. Won’t you help me write the rest of my story? I promise I’ll be a good companion because I know how unrequited love feels. Now I’m ready to get as much love as I give. I’ve been spayed, microchipped and treated for heartworms. I’m ready whenever you are. ID# A09461471 HOUSTON SPCA 900 Portway Drive, Houston 77024, 713.869.SPCA (7722) Noon to 8 p.m. daily, www.houstonspca.org
