KEYNOTE Responding to the Gifted Reader
Guiding gifted learners in their learning is both important and necessary.
Guiding the gifted in their reading is perhaps even more crucial. Since
gifted students are usually proficient and highly motivated readers, their
reading needs and reading instruction are often overlooked or dismissed as
“they can handle it on their own.” It is our responsibility to guide our gifted
students into positive reading experiences. Today we will investigate the
reading needs of gifted learners and provide suggestions and strategies to
help strenathen and motivate gifted learners in their reading. |

What's New in Young Adult Literature: 2010 Edition
We are becoming aware that young adult literature is a highly appropriate
and rich literary resource for gifted students. The task is to make the right
match between reader and novel. This session builds a rationale for using
Young Adult Literature with gifted learners and reviews new novels. We will
book talk the latest novels, emphasizing middle and high school works but
not ignoring children’s novels, and hear how to apply and connect them to
students and the curriculum. A book list will be provided.

| Message Sent: Media Literacy in the 2ist Century
Kids spend an average of more than seven hours a day with some form of
| media. As a result, they sometimes grow up having more interaction with
| TV, the Internet, and computer games than people. “Media Literacy” refers
to the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media messages of
all kinds. This interactive presentation will explore basic concepts of media
literacy by examining TV and Internet commercials, print ads, and other
messages. We will discuss marketing to youth, tobacco advertising, social
networking, and the culture of consumerism. Parents and teachers will
discover untold stories, deconstruct ads, examine some of the implications
of living in a technological society, and walk away with resources that
caretakers can use to help kids become more critical consumers of media.
