for conservation of natural gifts.

Ecological work is not one person's work. It is everybody's work because all of us breathe, all of us eat and every one of us takes something from the plants and the planet.

The vision of Munshiji itself is a sapling which needs nurturing. Dr. M.L. Shrikant, a dynamic visionary himself has re-initiated, not as an activity to be taken up by any individual, but as a Campus movement. "Munshiji's vision is our mission".

Let us green our thoughts, let us lead a green life style and help repair the environment - the only environment that we have."

The students of Bhavan's College presented a short skit in Marathi in keeping with proram's theme.

Prof. Vijay Thorat stressed upon the theme of 'Go Green'. A special poster on the theme was released at the hands of Dr. M.L. Shrikant, Chairman - Bhavan's Campus, Andheri who was the inspiration behind such an initiative. The entire hall reverberated with thunderous applause.

Prof. Vinit Vaidya proposed a vote of thanks.

SPCE gets autonomy

Engg Institution In Andheri 2nd Under Mumbai University To Bag 'Freedom'

In fact, the statutes that encourage colleges affiliated to the Mumbai University to go in for autonomy, read that "the affiliating system is not the answer to excellence". "We will incorporate a lot of what modem India requires to grow in our curriculum," added Chitale. The college offers courses in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, but will now chalk out its growth and diversification plans.

Mumbai: Andheri-based Sardar Patel College of Engineering (SPCE) will enter its golden jubilee year as an autonomous institution. The University Grants Commission awarded autonomy to this college nearly seven years after they had applied for academic freedom.

Simply put, when classes start next month, students will have access to syllabus designed by top-rate faculty, who have picked up threads from industry captains and international universities. SPCE becomes first engineering institute under the Mumbai varsity and second after Xavier's to bag the special status.

College principal S Y Mhaiskar confirmed that he had received the UGC letter on Monday but added that he was awaiting a nod from the University of Mumbai. According to the statutes, the university needs to notify the autonomy, before the college can exercise it.

"We have committed faculty members and top-ranking students.

Sardar Patel is known to deliver quality education and I feel that the autonomy will allow us set even higher standards for ourselves. Whether it is designing our own curriculum or devising our own system of evaluation, or foraying into new streams at a later stage, everything will be done keeping in mind the fact that research and innovation have to be at the centre of all activities on our campus," added Mhaiskar.

Faculty members on campus are elated and they have been promised enough time to carry out research and grow. S G Chitale, campus director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan that runs the 48-year-old college, said, "The decision to go autonomous was taken because the institution wanted to improve its standard of teaching learning. When there were fewer affiliated colleges, they looked to the university for direction for curriculum. But now the system is unwieldy."

The autonomy was waiting in the wings. "But we have driven one lesson into our heads that we as faculty have not become autonomous; so we can't do just anything we want. It's the institute which has got autonomy. And it has to be handled with responsibility," added Mhaiskar, who said his faculty, management and university officials stood by him during the phase of getting autonomy.

Looking Back

Sardar Patel College of Engineering is considered among the top five technological institutes in the city. Set up in 1961, the college was inaugurated by the country's first prime minister. "During the course of his inaugural speech, Pandit Nehru stressed on the importance of engineering education and the training of a skilled cadre of technical personnel. He also referred to the extraordinary feat of the Russian 'T win Cosmonauts" and said that "all differences and distinctions which separate us would vanish and the world would become one". He affirmed that,'Trained men can rebuild a country; money cannot do it. It's only hard work, intelligently directed that produces results."

What Is Autonomy?

It will allow the engineering college to design its own curricula and hold its own examinations

What It Means For Students?

Fees will be fixed by the government, but curriculum will be designed by the college faculty. Students will continue to get their degrees from Mumbai university

-..: Towards Corporate Citizenship ...

Is the business of Business only to do Business? The debate continues ...

But if so ... than why are big corporate like, ICICI Bank Ltd, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hewlett-Packard India Ltd, General Electric, etc have given their contribution towards the society by organizing different activities like blood donation camps, vocational training, employee welfare, disaster relief, health care etc. Also smaller companies are making their mark in the field of CSR by conducting certain activities from time to time.

Today CSR has become a worldwide buzz word in the corporate sector Whereby the interest of the society is considered by taking responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, employees, shareholders, communities and the environment in all aspects of their operations. To help the organization being more socially responsible, they should scan the environment in which they operate & balance their economics effects on human welfare and society.

However the survey by CII in Tamil Nadu, published in Express Buzz dated 13th Jan showed that only 40 per cent of the companies practice CSR initiatives in India. The pilot survey, highlighted that a majority of the companies did not take CSR seriously and those who did, did it only with a philanthropic frame of mind. Mostly the corporate make the employee welfare activities as a part of their companies' CSR activates rather then focusing more on the society. More focus is given by corporate on areas like brand building & sustainability rather than the original charity based activities.

Multinational Corporate responsibility towards under developed/developing countries was debated at the panel discussion "Multinational Corporate Conduct in Asia," held attheAsia Business Conference on February 14 at Harvard Business School.

Ever since the public outcry in the 1990s over the wages paid by Nike to its Asian factory workers, the issue of multinational corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its impact on a brand image has become a permanent reality in corporate boardrooms-whether or not executives have a deep-seated passion for the social issues involved.

Mahatma Gandhi's Trusteeship Principle is all about an attitude of Developing Corporate Citizenship by the owners and the managers of Business.

Samagam with Mr Madan Padaki at FMB Center

On 20th July 2010 evening for our FMB 13 September batch at the Center for FMB we had a very interesting Samagam session by Mr Madan Padaki, who is an SP Jain Alumni of the PGDM 1999 batch. Madan is the Co-Founder & CEO of Mr. Madan Padaki MeritTracServices Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore.

Madan completed his engineering from the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore and joined Wipro Corporation. Attracted by the booming IT industry, he moved to Infosys Technologies into a Product Management & Marketing role. He then went on to pursue his PGDM from S.P.Jain Institute. On graduating, he joined BFL Software (now Mphasis/EDS) in a Business Development role and was posted to Tokyo, Japan. Bitten by the entrepreneurial bug in Aug 2000, he conceived and co-founded MeritTrac- as a pioneering idea in skills assessments. MeritTrac is today India's Largest Skills Assessment company and was recognized as a winner of the NASSCOM Innovation Award 2007 & Red Herring Top 100 Asia Award.

The key learnings that he brought out in the session were:

1) Be committed 200 % to whatever you do. If you need to convince somebody you need to be thoroughly convinced yourself first about your idea/proposition.

2) Primarily two questions for which one needs to know the

answers for: a) Who is the customer? & b) What is the need?

3) Have a strong belief in your plan; and work towards attracting top companies towards meeting your plan's ( sales) objectives.

4) Try to build a team comprising of people who want to do well for

themselves. It will be passionate, self driven people who will help the business flourish and grow.

5) Your customers, suppliers etc will do business with you when

they trust you. They basically invest in people whom they trust. So in the running of our businesses we need to invest in peoples and their ideas.

6) Passion is infectious! End of the day" fire in the belly" matters.

7) Always have a vision and dream big.

8) Trust in the power of networking. At times even the persons you

meet may not give you immediate work even then keep on building your network offriends and associates.

People who have done well for themselves had LUCK on their side where the word LUCK was given a new dimension:

L stands for Location (Area) and means your firm's objectives/plan e.g. H RTalents, Assessment

U is for Understanding (the business thoroughly)

C is for Connections (Friends, Associates ,Networking) & lastly

K stands for Knowledge.

A CUP OF COFFEE

A gathering of alumni, highly placed and established in their careers, got together to visit their college Professor. In their conversation they soon turned into complaints about the stress in work and day today life problems. Meanwhile, the professor went to the kitchen in order to offer coffee, to his students and returned with a large pot of coffee with a set of different cups made of different materials like steel, copper, plastic, glass, crystal and some expensive, and some plained shape. Professor asked his students to share the hot coffee themselves as to their choice of cups.

While the students had a cup of coffee in their hand, the professor said: 'If you notice that all the nice and good looking and expensive cups have been taken up, just leaving behind the plain and cheap

cups. In fact, it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress & agony. Actually, what all of you really wanted was coffee, but not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each other's cups.

Further, the professor said, "If life is like coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn't change. Sometimes, by concentrating on the cups, we fail to enjoy the essence of the coffee in it". Whatever, a job one ought to do, must be done always with self-satisfaction. "Doing well to others is not a duty, but it is a joy, which will enhance your own health and happiness".

Bhavan's Yoga Bharati GURUPURNIMA CELEBRATIONS

Swami Sivananda says, " It was not without reason that the India of the past carefully tended and kept alive the lamp of Guru- Tattva. It is therefore not without reason that India, year after year, age after age, commemorates anew this ancient concept of the Guru, adores it and pays homage to it again and again, and thereby re-affirms its belief and allegiance to it. For, the true Indian knows that the Guru is the only guarantee for the individual to transcend the bondage of sorrow and death, and experience the Consciousness of the Reality."

Students and trained Yoga ~_ Teachers of Bhavan's Yoga I!!IH_ Bharati celebrated 'Gurupurnima' at Yoga Kutir on 24th July '10. The function started with Nirali Shah , a student of Yoga Shastri Course, reciting Guruvandana, eulogizing the greatness of a Guru.

had imparted the knowledge of Yoga and trained them to face life.

Yoga Shastri, Hema Ravindran, expressed her gratitude by quoting the following sloka:

Dhyana moo/am gurur moorthihi Pooja moo/am guro padam Mantra moo/am guror vaakyam Moksha moo/am guru krupa

Which meant Guru's form is best to meditate on; Guru's feet are best to worship; Guru's word is the best mantra and Guru's grace is the root of liberation. A shisya requires openness and willingness to learn. That's why it is said that one should be an empty cup while going to the Guru.

Shri Dilip Tansavala, a visiting faculty at BYB was the guest of honour. Extolling the virtues of a Guru, he said, Guru is the epitome of knowledge who dispels darkness and that we must put into practice what we learn from the Guru.

The students and teachers paid their obeisance to Yogacharya Dr. Hnasraj Yadav. Flowers, sweets and 'angvastrams' were offered to Guruji with rich tributes. All expressed their sentiments towards the kindness with which Guruji

Yoga Shastri Certificates were handed out by Guruji himself to successful candidates on the occasion.

Jitendra Ramhotra, one of the oldest disciples of Yogachrayaji said one must totally surrender to the Guru and humbly sit at his feetto gain knowledge.

Criterion for selection of the right water purification system!!!

How do you evaluate competing, often contradictory, statements put up by Industrial bandwagons and determine which claims are accurate and which advertisements are nothing more than creative writing? When purchasing health related products, creative

advertising can be expensive for the consumer, not to mention downright

dangerous.

Have you been thinking about installing a water treatment device in your home? Are you confused regarding a carbon filter or a reverse osmosis system? Do you need a water softener or an ultraviolet system?

Whether you choose to work with a water treatment professional or do the job on your own, having an understanding of the various types of home water treatment technologies is critical to making a good decision. You will be making a substantial investment in equipment, and you want to make sure that investment is the one that is most appropriate to you r water treatment situation.

From consumer's perspective, shopping for a treatment system can be confusing. Different systems tackle different contaminants at different spots in the house which range from whole-house filters that clean water when it first enters the home to "point-of-use" devices such as filtration devices.

The purpose of using the above water treatment systems is due to groundwater pollution and contamination in different parts of India. The incidence of fluoride above permissible levels of 1.5ppm occur in 14 Indian states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra ,Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal affecting a total of 69 districts. High levels of salinity are reported from all these states. Pollution of groundwater due to industrial effluents and municipal waste in water bodies is another major concern in many cities and industrial clusters in India. It is thus necessary to have know-how of the different principles of water treatment technologies that science has offered to us. Following is a basic description of the most common household water treatment options.

Filters: Filters can be configured in many ways, and have varying types of mechanical and chemical reduction capabilities.

Water softeners: Water softeners use acation exchange resin to reduce the level of hardness in water. The resin exchanges sodium or potassium ions for the hardness ions (calcium and magnesium) as the water passes over the resin.

Reverse Osmosis Systems: Water pressure is used to force water molecules through a membrane that has extremely tiny pores, leaving the larger contaminants behind. A reverse-osmosis system is a good treatment option for people who have unacceptably high levels of dissolved inorganic contaminants in their drinking water which can not be removed effectively or economically by other methods. Water from shallow wells in agricultural areas that contains high nitrate levels is a good example of a situation where RO would make sense.

Ultraviolet Treatment Systems: Ultraviolet treatment systems use ultraviolet (UV) light to

kill microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses, although some systems on the 0 __

market are designed for treatment of heterotrophic bacteria only. The efficiency of

the UV system is affected by the clarity of the incoming water supply. Depending upon the design of the system and the strength of the UV lamp, ultraviolet light has been shown to be effective at disinfecting drinking water.

As described the different technologies vary in their abilities to handle specific types of contaminants. When choosing a specific make and model of a product or system, it is important to know that it is made from materials safe for water contact, that it is structurally sound, and that it will perform as claimed by the manufacturer. Many manufacturers will have their products certified by an independent organization, which offers assurance to consumers that the product meets the requirements of national residential water filter standards. It is important that systems be installed and operated according to the manufacturer's instructions. Thus, drinking water is too fundamental and serious an issue to be left to one institution alone. Safe drinking water can be assured, provided we set our mind to address it.

Bhavan's College Ranking

SIXTH among Science Colleges in Mumbai

Since last fourteen years, the India Today conducts an annual survey of Colleges and institutes offering Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering and Medicine, to identify the BEST COLLEGES in their respective fields. Rankings of the Colleges surveyed are computed, based on a Perception Score {from an option poll conducted among Academic experts} and a Factual Score {from the data furnished by Colleges} to determine the best undergraduate colleges in India. A total of FIFTEEN HUNDRED Colleges were considered in the six disciplines, and they were ranked under the following six themes, viz.

• Reputation

• Quality of Academic Input

• Student Care

• Infrastructure and

• Job Prospects. Overall ranks were based on perceptual and factual scores, not on perceptual and factual ranks. Therefore, the overall rank of a college may differ from its perceptual and factual ranks. Faculties were not considered.

In the latest overall ranking, published in the June 28th issue of the India Today magazine, of all the Science Colleges in India, Bhavan's College stood 30th for the All India Level, whereas, in the City-wise ranking of Science Colleges in Mumbai, Bhavan's College {Andheri} stood SIXTH.
