INTERIER 08 Design Competition

An initiative of the Interieur Foundation

INTERIEUR 08
17 – 26 October 2008
Kortrijk, Belgium

• Competition rules

The INTERIEUR 08 Design Competition is a biennial competition for creativity in interior

design. It is organised by the Interieur Foundation, located in Kortrijk, Belgium. The
Foundation undertakes to display all entries conforming to the rules received for the 19th
competition, in an exhibition which will be organised alongside the Biennale INTERIEUR 08.
This will take place in the Kortrijk Xpo venue, from 17 to 26 October 08. The competition
jury will award a number of prizes, and the winners will be announced during the
inauguration of the exhibition at the Biennale. Total prize money amounts to 27,500 euro,
not including 2 Workshops at the Vitra Summer School and 4 stands in
‘theyoungdesignersfair’.

1. Conditions for entry

The competition is restricted to objects which conform to the three themes as decided by
the Foundation. For the 19th edition of the competition the themes are ‘WORKING,
PLAYING, LIVING’. Projects concerning architecture and town planning will not be allowed.
In case of dispute, the jury will decide about eligibility. The decision of the jury is final.

Only prototypes are accepted for the competition, and entries may not be in production on
17 October 08, when the results of the competition will be announced. All designers, design
teams, students or schools, of any age or nationality, may take part in the competition.
Manufacturers are not eligible. Each participant is limited to 2 entries.

2. Jury

The members of the jury for the 19th INTERIEUR Design Competition are:

Louise Campbell (DK)

Adam Goodrum (AU)
Oscar Peña (CO/NL)
Marnick Smessaert (BE)
Alasdhair Willis (UK)

In addition, each sponsor will have a vote in the award of their sponsored prize.

The jury will judge entries according to the following criteria:

- The way the design contributes to innovation in interior design creativity. This will
include cultural, social, technological, economic, ecological and aesthetic criteria.
- The degree of finishing of the prototype and in how far it is ready for production.
- The way the design corresponds to the brief and the imposed theme.

3. Themes

3.1 ‘WORKING’
Work: in an open-plan office or in a secluded room? Are offices completely out of sync with
an increasingly mobile world? The work environment today is a world in transformation. A
must for some, a second home for others. Which solutions lead to better comfort at work?
Which objects can make that little bit of difference? Which ideas can help increase
motivation? The "Working" category is looking for designs which make the workplace more
pleasant, more practical and more intelligent.

3.2 ‘PLAYING’
The game as an adventure, as physical exertion, or pure distraction of the mind, can
transcend, be competitive or relax. Some games make use of the latest technology, others
survive generations, are re-discovered and transformed in a new packaging. The "Playing"
category is looking for designs which deliver a leisure activity which is not immediately
obvious, an unforeseen entertainment, or an innovative pastime for mind and body.

3.3 ‘LIVING’
Which chair, coat stand or lamp is different from the thousands of others already on the
market? Influenced by new colours, motifs, shapes and trends such as cocooning, lounging
and hiving, the interior is changing. New materials and production techniques, new ideas
and designs, new needs and solutions: they all contribute to an interesting and innovative
approach which influence life, work and play. The "Living" category is looking for designs
which transform the home into an inspirational environment, products which supply
practical answers to current questions, which make living at home more interesting.

objects will feature with a photograph alongside the winning prototypes in the INTERIEUR
08 catalogue. The 15 selected participants will also receive a personal certificate of
selection.

The jury reserves the right to split or combine prizes, and to award additional ‘Honourable
Mentions’. The jury also reserves the right to decide if an entry is congruent with the
competition criteria, and on that basis refuse an entry to be put on display. Decisions of the
jury are final.

D. Announcement of the results

Winners will be notified of their prize as soon as possible after the jury deliberation. All
participants will be informed in writing of the results of the jury.
