Marathons.
Paula was born in Cheshire, England in 1973. Her father was a runner in his
free time (he ran marathons) and when she was very young Paula started to run with
him. She wanted to be a runner and she joined a running club when she was nine.
Paula practised a lot, but she worked hard at school too. When she left school she
went to university and studied French and German. She married another runner, Gary
Lough, and he became her manager.
Paula is very, very fit of course and she runs four hours every day. She also
sleeps a lot. She usually eats healthy food – but her favourite food is chocolate!

VIDEO GAMES: LIFE AS A GAME TESTER
Mike Pierce is from the USA. He’s fourteen, so he goes to school – but he’s got
a job, too. Mike works at home. He plays computer games!
“I love computer games”, Mike says, “and my dad makes computer games. I
test the games, that’s my job”.
Mike is happy because he gets lots of free games.
“I don’t work in the mornings, I get up at half past eight and run to school. I don’t
even have breakfast!”, he says. “But I finish school at half past three and then I work for
two or three hours. I work again after dinner. I go to bed at about twelve or one
o’clock”.
What do his parents say?
“He doesn’t play sport and he doesn’t go out”, says his mum. “I know he loves
it, but I’m not happy about it”.
His dad thinks it’s great.
“He’s only fourteen, but he’s got a job”, he says, “I think he’s a star”.

Thank you for your letter. How are you, and how’s Earth? We’re all fine.
There are four astronauts in this station at the moment (three men and one
woman). We are from three different countries (the USA, Russia and
Japan).
There are five bedrooms (they’re called galleys). There is a small room
called the service module, too. Our personal computer (for e-mails) is in it,
and there is a big white table… and a bike.
My galley is very small, of course! There is a sleeping bag in it, but it isn’t on
the floor, it’s on the wall!
No, it isn’t cold. It’s very warm and cosy in here! And it isn’t dark. There are
a lot of colours on the walls, and there are fourteen windows.
