PMs polling day warning to British Jews:

We must stay in EU to stand up for Israel
campaign to leave the EU. It features a line
of immigrants passing through Europe and
was condemned as having echoes of 1930s
imagery.
When I look at that poster Nigel Farage
stood in front of for the Leave campaign, I
see the opposite of everything that makes
our country great, Cameron told more than

We should say to Farage and his campaign

THE PRIME minister has warned that Britain

can only influence European policies towards
Israel by remaining inside the EU and
called on the Jewish community to roundly
reject the divisive and intolerant Leave
campaign, writes Justin Cohen.
David Cameron used his only referendum
address to Anglo-Jewry delivered less than
72 hours before todays crunch vote to insist
the countrys influence is enhanced rather
than diminished by being part of the union
on issues from the economy and climate
change to preventing Iran getting the bomb.
He told Jewish Cares annual dinner:
When were fighting terrorism and Islamist
extremism, are we better doing that out on
our own or fighting together with our European partners? When Europe is discussing its
attitude towards Israel do you want Britain
Israels greatest friend in there opposing
boycotts or do you want us outside the
room, powerless to affect the conversation.
Cameron spoke of his love of the country and described Jewish functions as some
of the most patriotic he had attended. Invoking his predecessor Winston
Churchill, he said the wartime

than operate alone, when
he took the greatest decision in our history.

Leave MPs in last-ditch appeal to Jewish voters

THE CASE for leaving the European
Union has been made in recent weeks by
Members of Parliament for the Conservative Party and UKIP, with
appeals to Jewish voters
on issues of interest,
such as Israel.

Secretary Theresa
Villiers [pictured], a
member of Conservative Friends of Israel, has pointed
to
the
EUs
record
of
criticising
Israel and
warned that a federal European voice on

the Jewish state would be catastrophic.
One of the EUs ambitions is to
replace individual member states on
crucial international bodies, she told
Jewish News.
If it succeeds in doing that, the EU
will have a whole new set of opportunities to heap criticism on Israel as it has
done on so many occasions in recent
years.
She added: We can be certain that
hostility to Israel would pervade every
voting decision if an EU representative
replaced the UK government on such
bodies.

MICHAEL GOVE has apologised

for comparing economic experts
warning about Brexit with the
Nazis who smeared Albert Einstein in the 1930s.
It came after the prime minister said his friend and cabinet colleague had lost it and made a
"massive mistake" in making the
comparison.
Apologising for the comments, which he made on LBC
radio on Tuesday, Gove said:
Yesterday I was asked a question by Iain Dale about the predictions of doom for the
economy. I answered, as I often
do, with a historical analogy. It

was clumsy and inappropriate.
Obviously I did not mean to
imply anything about the motives
of those who have spoken out in
favour of staying in the EU.
Throughout the campaign
I've avoided making personal attacks, I'm sorry for speaking so
clumsily and apologise for giving
offence.
I think Britain will be more
prosperous if we end our connection to the euro project and I
should have answered this question directly.

No ban on Hezbollah flags in

London, say march organisers
ORGANISERS OF an annual
anti-Israel march through London next Sunday will not be
warning protesters against
waving Hezbollah or Hamas
flags because they do not believe it is illegal to do so.
The Islamic Human Rights
Commission, a non-governmental organisation, is behind the Al
Quds Day rally which, it says,
unites people for the freedom
of the oppressed in Palestine
and beyond. It will be held in
London on Sunday, 3 July when
marchers will protest through
the capital, descending on
Grosvenor Square.
IHRC chairman Massoud
Shadjareh said: We do not orchestrate all banners or flags
and it is up to participants which
flag/banner they wish to carry
as long as it is within the law
and does not have abusive content or language.
Asked about previous arrests
of those flying Hezbollah flags,
the IHRC said: They were
arrested but not charged and
this indicates it is not unlawful
and no crime was committed.

those of groups such as Islamic
State, while evading sanction.
For the first time, a counterdemonstration
has
been
planned by grassroots groups
such as Sussex Friends of Israel,
the Zionist Federation and the
Israel Advocacy Movement.
We will not tolerate calls for
the dismantling of the state of
Israel or verbal attacks on the
Jewish people in our capital,
said organiser Fiona Sharpe.

Survivor challenges Ken over Hitler claims

is the first time Ken Livingstone
has been challenged face to face
on TV by an historian and expert.
Livingstone was revealed to have
an unhealthy fascination with
Nazis and was clearly exposed as

making false inferences from a
selective reading of history, the
results of which suit his prejudice.
He added that Livingstone
confessed that J-TVs interview
was the first time his arguments
had been seriously challenged
and when faced with the facts he
had no answer.
Livingstone was suspended
from Labour after he said in an
interview that Hitlers policy was
that Jews should be moved to
Israel. He was supporting Zionism
before he went mad and ended
up killing six million Jews.

he Jewish community has reacted with shock and horror to

the murder of MP Jo Cox.
The Labour politician died after
being shot and stabbed in the street
outside her constituency advice surgery last Thursday. The campaigning
politician and former Oxfam activist is the first MP to be
killed while in office since
1990 and the first female
member of parliament ever.
Chief Rabbi Ephraim
Mirvis said: Were united in
grief at the terrible loss of
Jo Cox. Brutally murdered
as she served constituents.
May her memory be for a
blessing.

Jo Cox MP. We send our

to issue a statement. It
wrote: We are shocked
and appalled at the attack
on Jo Cox MP and our
thoughts and prayers are
with her and her family.
Tributes also came
from Israel. Knesset
speaker Yuli Edelstein
sent his condolences to
his British equivalent John Bercow,
saying: I am deeply shocked by the
murder of MP Jo Cox. A murder committed against an elected representative, for expressing an opinion, is a
vile act and a warning sign for any society, including ours in Israel.
Freedom of expression is the
bedrock of our societies and such violence is an abhorrent phenomenon
that must be stamped out.

MP planned to launch probe into far right

JO COX was planning to launch a report in
Parliament on the dangers of nationalist
radicals.
The Labour MP for Batley and Spen had
also recorded a video about preventing Islamophobia, according to The Times.
The report by Tell Mama, an organisation
that monitors anti-Muslim incidents, warns
of rising aggression by far-right nationalists
and an increase in Islamophobia in the last
year.
Mrs Cox was known for her commitment
to causes such as the plight of Syrian
refugees.
The Times reported that on 29 June she
planned to launch the report and play the
video.
It shows her saying she had spoken to Tell
Mama about preventing Islamophobia and
discussing the problem that in her constituency many of our young women dont
feel safe when theyre out on the street.
The director of Tell Mama, Fiyaz Mughal,
told the newspaper there were significant
clusters of far right activity in Yorkshire and
that the charitys annual report would detail
an increase in anti-Muslim activity in the UK

last year.
Mr Mughal said: In the last 18 months
South Yorkshire has been one of the leading areas in the country (for Islamaphobic
incidents).
The Community Security Trust told Jewish
News: The support that Jo Cox gave to
Tell MAMA is more evidence that she was a
conscientious and hard-working MP motivated by a desire to improve peoples lives.
Her death is a tragedy and our sympathies
are with her family and friends.

WHEN I heard news of the attack on my colleague and near neighbour, I could hardly believe
it. Then, a few hours later, came word that she
had died of her injuries. I wondered whether this
could possibly be true. It was too much to take
in, especially having taken place on the streets of
the quiet town of Birstall between Leeds and
Bradford, just six miles from where I live.
Jo Cox came to see me in March 2014 to ask
whether I could take some portrait photos of her
to be used in her bid to become the Labour candidate for Batley and Spen. When she arrived at my
constituency office on that Friday in early spring, I
saw a tiny, lively articulate young woman who, having grown up in Batley had moved to London, married, and had two children at that time aged just
two and four. She told me she lived on a houseboat
on the Thames and cycled everywhere, which, as a
fellow cyclist, immediately made me like her.
By that September, Jo had been chosen to
contest the marginal seat for Labour and in 2015
she was duly elected with a swing to Labour and
a majority of more than 6,000.
Jo immediately made herself known an liked in
the House of Commons. It wasnt just just her
bubbly personality and obviously commitment to
her new profession, but in her knowledge and
passion for her subjects of interest Development
Aid and Foreign Affairs on which she regularly
spoke in the Chamber. She was often to be seen
in the voting lobby ready to cycle home in her
Lycra and helmet, wanting to get home quickly to
her family after the days business in Parliament.
At 8pm on Thursday 16 June, at St Peters Church
in Birstall, all those who wanted to express their
love for the MP who had only served them for just
over a year turned up to mourn her cruel death.
It was a testament to Jos character and generosity of spirit that so many were there for her that
night and that since that terrible day we have heard
much more about the small woman with enormous
personality who meant so much to so many. We will
all miss Jos presence in our House of Commons.
What she stood for will never be lost or forgotten.

Bonehill charged with harassment

A FAR-RIGHT activist has been charged with harassing MP Luciana Berger.
The offence relates to allegations of malicious communications sent by Joshua Bonehill-Paine, 23, to the Labour politician via
social media.
A Scotland Yard spokesman told Jewish
News: Joshua Bonehill-Paine of HMP Wayland was charged on 13 June with racially or
religiously aggravated offence of harassment
(non-violent) committed between October 26,
2014, and January 25, 2015. Its alleged the offences are racially or religiously aggravated.
He has yet to be given a court date.
Somersetlive.co.uk reported Bonehill-Paine
as saying he would deny the charge.
He is quoted as claiming: I fully welcome
the opportunity of a trial and look forward to
my day in court. It is by now clear that I am the
victim of state tyranny and these further
charges only show the true nature of the forces
I am exposing.
I do not fear the possibility of a long time
spent in prison, I will fight, fight, fight! And do
everything within the remit of my power to

Woman admits to synagogue bomb hoax
Finchley United Synagogue
A JEWISH woman has admitted making a bomb hoax to a

synagogue three years ago.
Claire Mann [nee Silverstone] texted the rebbetzin of
Finchley United to claim a dangerous item had been planted
at the location, with the intention of pinning the crime on
another parent at her daughters Jewish primary school.
The 43-year-old pleaded

guilty during an appearance at
Wood Green Crown court.
As well as one count of communicating false information
about a bomb hoax, she also
admitted a count of committing an act or series of acts
with the intent of perverting
the course of justice. Mann will
be sentenced on 30 August.

Brits prefer Jewish migrants to Muslims Jewish charities raise 1billion

BRITS WOULD rather welcome
Jewish than Muslim immigrants
into the country, a controversial
new study has shown.
Researchers from the Centre
for Social Investigation based
at Nuffield College, Oxford,
showed that only seven percent of respondents would
have a problem with Jewish migrants, whereas 17 percent opposed Muslims. Topping the
list of unwelcome foreigners
were Roma (gypsies), with
three in 10 people suggesting
they would oppose the travellers immigration to the UK.
Overall, Britons were shown
as more receptive to immigrants
than continental Europeans, 10
percent of whom opposed Jews

entering their country, and a
quarter of whom would close
the door to Muslims.
The study also showed that
those in the UK were more welcoming of skilled workers from
places such as India and Poland,
although attitudes shifted substantially when asked about
unskilled workers from those
countries, as they were regarded as a threat to housing,
pay and public services.
There is a clear hierarchy
of preferred type of migrant,
said authors Anthony Heath and

JEWISH CHARITIES are among

the top money-raisers in their
field, according to a new report.
The Faith Matters survey by
think tank New Philanthropy
Capital (NPC) reveals that
faith-based charities raise 16
billion a year, and account for
almost half of all human rights
and overseas development
fundraising.
It says that, of the 16bn figure, Jewish organisations raise
about 1bn a year, second only
to Christian groups, which account for 11.2bn.
Muslim charities raise 542m
a year, Quakers 104m, Hindus
83.2m, Sikhs 61m and Buddhists 48m, the report says,
with multi-faith charities bring-
ing in 7.5m annually. The remaining 3.3bn goes to other

organisations with religious objects for which the NPC could
not determine the faith.
The report, based on analysis
of Charity Commission data,
says the most common cause for
faith-based charities is education
and training. But the cause areas
in which the largest proportion
of religious charities are involved are overseas aid, in which
49 percent of all charities are
faith-based, and human rights,
(45 percent are faith-based).
The report says that charities
with annual incomes of more
than 1m account for approximately 73 percent of Jewish
charity income.
Polish righteous to be given new base Israel votes for national holiday to celebrate aliyah
A DEAL has been signed to establish
a new base for a group of heroic men
and women who saved thousands of
Jewish lives during the Holocaust.
Around 250 Poles recognised as
Righteous Among the Nations are still
alive today, but the organisation which
brings them together was housed in
a tiny office in a run-down building.
Without a lift, some of the elderly saviours are unable to even get to the
26 square metre office and there is no
space to entertain visiting groups.
But representatives of From the
Depths Foundation which earlier this
year launched a campaign backed by
Jewish News to support the group
have now signed an agreement with

the Socio-Cultural Association of Jews
in Poland (TSKZ) for the establishment
of an educational centre to be used by
the Polish Society of the Righteous
Among the Nations. Part of the new
headquarters of TSKZ, scheduled to
open next year in Warsaw, it will host
lectures, exhibitions and workshops
with tours from around the world.
From the Depths founder Jonny
Daniels said: This is the next step in
ensuring that these heroes receive the
respect and honour they deserve.
TSKZ chairman Artur Hofman said:
This is only a small part of how we can
repay them for something priceless.
A NEW NATIONAL holiday to celebrate

the contribution of immigrants to Israel
has passed into law, writes Justin Cohen.
Government and opposition figures
backed the Yom HaAliyah bill following
a campaign by TLV Internationals, the
largest olim organisation in Israel.
The date of the holiday will be 10th
Nisan, which holds great biblical significance in Jewish history. According to
the Torah, this is the first recorded mass
aliyah, when Joshua crossed the Yarden
at Gilgal with all the Jewish people.
TLV Internationals has been marking
the day for a number of years with barbecues and performances by olim bands.
And while the new law will not mean an
extra day off work for Israelis, it is hoped

tens of thousands more will now join the
celebrations. The ministry of education
will also institute a day of programming
for students as part of the new bill.
Jay Shultz, founder of TLV Internationals and president of the Am Yisrael
Foundation, said: Aliyah doesnt just
affect us all in terms of who we are as a
people but impacts on the day-to-day
reality of this country. Its not just celebrating grandparents, but what is helping to build this country now.
It is the ideal of aliyah and the pioneering contributions of olim in each
generation that make this the easiest
time in history to be a Jew living in the
Ukrainian Jewish olim land in Israel

10.5m special needs school to open Youre spoiling us, Mr Ambassador!

A TEN-YEAR wait came to an
end this week as a Jewish special needs school in Stamford
Hill finally got the go-ahead to
relocate to the site of a former
Jewish primary school on
Lordship Lane.
Hackney Council gave Sideby-Side the green light to
build a new 10.5million
school from July next year on
the former site of Avigdor Primary School, which will cater
for 110 children aged between
two and 19 years of age.
Side-by-Side currently operates out of a temporary buildings on Big Hill in Upper
Clapton, and school bosses
say the new building will include 18 residential apartments, which will be sold to

help pay for the venture.

While increasing pupil capacity by 30 percent, the
planned new development is

still much smaller than had
originally been planned.
Submissions from 2007 said

there would be 170 pupils and
29 residential units.
The new site, in the centre
of the strictly-Orthodox community, will offer purpose-built
facilities to the pupils, many of
whom have special needs.
Features will include therapy
and sensory rooms.
School leaders have appealed to donors to help
bring the plans to fruition,
with millions of pounds still
needed to be raised.
School chairman Jacob
Sorotzkin said they were exciting and ambitious plans,
adding: We are confident of
the Jewish communitys support to turn this project into a
reality.
3D project sees users talk to survivors El Al welcomes travel pros

AN INTERACTIVE Holocaust education project which uses 3D laser projections of Shoah survivors to
simulate conversation with users has
been launched at Westminster
Abbey, writes Gabriel Pogrund.
The Forever Project has inbuilt
software which matches a person's
question with the closest videorecorded answer.
The National Holocaust Centre,
which developed the permanent installation, launched the project with
an interfaith service attended by
700 people, including the Dean of

Westminster.
The National Holocaust Centres
Chief Executive Phil Lyons said: A
key part, if not the most important
part of a visit to the Centre is to listen and talk to a survivor; with this
project that will never change.'
We are looking forward to working collaboratively with other Holocaust education organisations in the
UK to establish how this vital project
can help to support their work in addition to our own, he continued.

Pitiful offer for Shoah museum space

CAMPAIGNERS FIGHTING for a museum
for Holocaust education at Trent Park to
honour the sites secretive role in winning
the Second World War and uncovering
Nazi atrocities have criticised the developers pitiful offer of space.
Alongside Bletchley Park,
the north London mansion
helped British spies win
the intelligence war,
housing high-ranking
German officials and
gathering vital evidence including of
Nazis mass killing of
Jews.
After a showdown
public meeting last week,
historians warned that
inadequate space would rob
future generations of a unique
opportunity to learn about how the
horrors of the Holocaust came to the
attention of Britain.
Author and historian Dr Helen Fry
said: We must give the Trent Park
Museum the full space that it needs
You cant tell the story properly with a
couple of broom cupboards next to a
caf. We want at least one room on the
significant discoveries of the Holocaust.
Berkeley Homes, the new owner of
the former Middlesex University campus
site, wants most of it for luxury housing,
developed over 45,000sq metres (52
acres). The company is offering 500sq
metres for ancillary uses.
Fry, together with campaign director
Jason Charalambous and historian
Damian Collins MP, are demanding

half the stable block, and the whole
of the ground floor and basement of
the mansion house as an absolute
minimum.
Berkeleys chairman Tony Pidgley said
the company has a great track record
of developing sites of historic significance in a sensitive manner,
but Charalambous said the offer
was a pitiful amount that does
not do justice to the estates
significant national history.
The campaigners argument
was supported by Iain
Standen, the
chief executive
of
Bletchley
Park,
where
Alan Turing and his
team famously broke
the Enigma code to turn
the war effort in the
Allies favour.
Bletchley now sees
250,000 visitors annually, and Standen said
Trent Park also had the
potential to become
a significant national
attraction, because it
has a unique and engaging story, which
means people will come to visit.
A petition for the museum, which had
attracted almost 1,500 signatures this
week, notes that Trent Park used highly
sophisticated room-bugging, eavesdropping and passive manipulation

After documents were declassified in
2004, historians discovered that the
precursor to MI6 operating at the site
learned about German U-boat tactics,
radar technology and Hitlers secret
weapons programme, including the V1,

V2 and atomic bombs.
It also began hearing more details
about the mass killing of Jews, as
German generals casually discussed it
without realising they were being
recorded.
Fry said: We began hearing about
Nazi atrocities at Trent Park in 1940, at
every stage, leading up to the Final
Solution. They were detailing things like
mobile gas trucks. By 1943, the Germans were already talking about 3.5
million Jews killed.
Future generations should be able to
come here and learn about this. Its really
important to do it justice.
Rabbis warning
over swastikas
A LEADING LONDON rabbi
this week warned of a rise in
right-wing extremism in the UK
after drawings of swastikas were
left in a childrens playground in
what he described as an attempt to instil fear.
The Nazi symbols have appeared four days in a row in
Amhurst Park, Stamford Hill, north
London, once stuck onto the back
of a car. Rabbi Herschel Gluck said
the presence of an Ajex house
the home for Jewish ex-British
service personnel nearby was no
coincidence.
He said: I think this is the rise
of right-wing extremism. There
are elderly people who served in
the British Army and fought in
the Second World War living
nearby and that is particularly
poignant. Its an attempt to intimidate and instil fear.
Rabbi Gluck said such incidents must be treated seriously,
especially in the light of the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox. He
added: Even though these may
seem small things, this can lead
to more serious matters and they
must not be tolerated.
Polish-born Ita Symons, chief
executive of the Agudas Israel
Housing Association, whose
family fled at the outbreak of war
in Europe, said: The intention is
to scare and incite hatred.
The Metropolitan Police said it
was investigating the incidents.

Chasidim arrested for shooting locals with air gun

TWO ISRAELI pilgrims have been
arrested in Ukraine after triggering a mass brawl by shooting
passers-by with an air gun stoking renewed confrontation with
locals and right-wing groups.
The incident jeopardises the
huge annual Chasidic pilgrimage
to the city of Uman, where tens of
thousands of religious Jews visit
the grave of the 18th century
sage, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.
The men, who were drunk,
started firing at locals from their
hotel window, hitting one man in
the face. Within minutes, an angry
mob appeared outside, cajoled
by nationalist party Svoboda.
Local Jewish leader Shimon
Buskila, who heads a community
of several hundred, told news
outlet JTA: They were drunk
and thought it was a good idea
Two Israelis were arrested afer triggering a mass brawl in Uman, Ukraine
at odds with the Chasidic pilgrims. Weeks earlier, one hotel

banned Jewish visitors on cost
grounds, saying previous pilgrim guests had caused thousands of pounds worth of
damage to the property.
Pilgrims meet in Uman at various times through the year,
but particularly during Rosh
Hashanah, because Rabbi Nachman called on his followers to be
with him on the Jewish new year.
Israeli police are posted there
during pilgrimages, and Ukrainian police often ban non-Jews
from the Pushkina area of the
city for fear of violence.
Locals have become increasingly resentful of the Chasids, citing instances of criminality among
the visitors, and arguing the
tourists do little for the economy.

ONE OF the best opportunities to understand Israel according to Israel
and Israel according to
the world comes at the
IDC Herzliya Conference,
held in the central coastal
city every year.
Last week saw the latest
round of speakers politicians, analysts, diplomats,
dignitaries, technocrats,
spies
and
soldiers,
mainly discussing (with
varying degrees of disagreement) the woes and
woes of Israel.
Boycotters,
Syrians,
hackers, jihadists, Americans declaring peace in
our time The list goes
on. Jewish News Foreign

Questions
abound.
What is going on over Israels northern border?

news is that while noone would ever say so
Israel is as secure today as

Her enemies are busy
killing each other, and as
Menachem Begin said on
the eve of the 1980 IranIraq War: We wish all
sides the greatest success.
More importantly, Israels military and intelligence capability is vast
and growing (Israels qualitative edge has become
a qualitative chasm) and
negotiators in Washington, D.C. are close to
agreeing record financing
over the next 10 years.
But the Middle East is in
chaos, and chaos breeds
concern. If Israel is a villa
in the jungle, the jungle
is on fire. All it takes is for
the wind to change direction, as it so often does in
this region and all bets
are off.

THIS BIAS AT THE BBC TWO-STATE SOLUTION
Southend and Westcliff Jewish community
has been debating the correlation between disproportionate and negative BBC
reporting on Israel and anti-Semitism.
Given that the BBC is the most trusted,
media brand globally and statistics from
police authorities and the CST verify that
spikes in anti-Semitic incidents occur in
times of excessive (and, by content, antiIsraeli) news output emanating from Israel
as in the last Gaza conflict, this correlation
cannot be denied.
Moreover, the constant claim perpetrated by pro-Palestinian groups that antiSemitism is not necessarily anti-Israel or
anti-Zionist is clearly a myth, given such
statistical information.
Many of us continue to complain to the
BBC about the disgraceful content of its
unbalanced, biased news output regarding Israel-Palestinian issues.
Such complaints are responded to politely but unsatisfactorily, full of the standard platitudes and wording with
reassurances that the BBC is totally fair,
strives for the highest standards and so on.
As we believe that the BBC will continue
spewing out the propaganda, we are tackling the issue from another angle which
may interest those of your readers who
hold views similar to ours.
We will continue to complain as noted
above, but running parallel with this we
have started to question the BBC news editors about similar geographical areas of
conflict, equally important, that are totally
ignored by the corporation.
Our objective here is simply one of mathematical and logical balance. If the BBC
spent more time reporting on these subjects, the amount of air time spent concentrating on Israel would be decreased.
Two recent examples where the BBC
failed to report were the 110 deaths and
scores wounded in the Armenian/Azeri
conflict and, more recently, the deaths of
seven Ukrainian soldiers from Russian artillery. Can your readers imagine the way
the BBC would have reported these fatalities and casualties had the victims been
Palestinian?
We implore your readers to engage actively with the BBC to ensure other conflicts are given similar coverage.

Regarding the article on page 12 and

your leader article (Jewish News, 26 May)
on the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman as the new defence minister, I wish
to correct the widely-held view that he is
adamantly opposed to a two-state solution.
The political platform of the secular Israel Beitenu party is a pragmatic one and
it is absolutely clear about the need for a
peace agreement with the Palestinians
based on two states to preserve the demographic balance.
The principle is based not at all on
physical wholesale transfer of Arabs
but on redrawing borders based on a
land for land and peace for peace approach.
This means that certain areas with a
high Arab population would become part
of a Palestinian state in exchange for the
incorporation of certain key areas of the
West Bank into Israel.
The principle of land swaps is not new

and has apparently formed the basis of
previous proposed plans, and there are
many examples of redrawing of borders
in Europe after conflicts.
It is certainly true that Lieberman takes
a strong line on security issues, probably
backed by large segments of the electorate (Israel Beitenu was the third largest
party in the 2009 election), but there are
other parties in the current coalition
which adopt a much more uncompromising stance on territorial issues.
I suggest, therefore, that incorporation
of Israel Beitenu into the coalition will actually strengthen Netanyahus efforts in
resuming negotiations.
I suggest also that it is incumbent on

Despite the best attempts of Jeremy Corbyn, the issue of anti-Semitism in his
Labour Party simply wont go away.
His announcement of an investigation
into anti-Semitism and other forms of
racism in the Labour Party (even though
there have not been any other than antiSemitic and the mere fact he cannot bring
himself just to say solely anti-Semitism
speaks volumes) has not changed anything.

Two months to have an investigation by
Shami Chakrabarti who mysteriously and not
coincidentally joined the Labour Party on the
same day. Two months to decide whether the
oily slime ball, his best friend and yesterdays
man Livingstone made anti-Semitic remarks
despite his protestations of the contrary to anyone who cares to listen. Recently sacked by
LBC and presumably soon to be seen on Al
Jazeera with Galloway.
Corbyn obviously hoped to kick the issue
into the long grass for two months but he has
already stated that once the process has been
completed he sees Livingstone being reinstated.
So its a whitewash. But he couldn't even wait
two months to give his process some pretence
of respectability. He has just readmitted to the
party Jackie Walker, vice-chair of Momentum,
who claimed Jews were chief financiers of the
sugar and slave trade.
So what is Shami Chakrabartis investigation
achieving, or even doing?

Outrageous comments from Labour activist
Jackie Walker (Jewish News, 2 June) are not untypical of methods employed to manipulate history to serve ones cause. Ken Livingstone
showed us that one can take a tiny tract, written
by a fifth-column Jew, to put Zionism and
Nazism in the same political box.
Jackie Walker, in the same vein, is implying
without citing her sources that Jews funded the
cost of the slave trade. The gullible out there will
be magnetised by this unfounded statement.
However, she failed to add that it was the
Arabs, while conquering African countries, who

acquired the commodity known as black slaves.
There was a ready market in the Catholic and
Christian dominated New Worlds that needed
cheap labour. She also omitted to add that due
to the ongoing Inquisition, Jews from Spain,
and especially Portugal, had to flee with their
slaves to the Caribbean to avoid being persecuted as Jews.
The holier-than-thou stance espoused by the
far left does show Jackie Walker et al that they are
about changing history to suit their political aims
and not to seek the truth. Well, what a surprise!

How things change. I dont know whether my attitude would alter in this present age but neither
I nor my late wife or our children attended faith
schools, which was an easy decision for us to
make. We made very special friends from all
races and religions and a proud moment for me
was when I was best man at a Catholic wedding.
We all attended cheder and kept and keep
kosher homes. It is sad that our integration into

While I would not disagree with Juliane Kokott, REALLY REQUIRED?
the EU judge at the European Court of Justice,
that the hijab should be viewed no differently
from a kippah, a Sikh turban or a Christian employee wearing a prominent crucifix (Jewish
News, 2 June), it does not follow that bosses
should be allowed to forbid employees from
wearing them at work.
The only circumstances under which employers
should be allowed to ban them are where there is
a health or safety hazard. Of those mentioned, this
could conceivably apply only to a crucifix on a
long chain which, like loose long hair, might get
entangled in machinery. The hijab should be no
problem, unlike the burka or niqab, in which the
face is covered. Since the latter can lead to serious
identification problems, the government would
be fully justified in banning their being worn in
public, just as it bans the balaclavas beloved of
bank robbers. This would be a public safety matter and not in any way ant-Muslim discrimination.

As a parent whose oldest child is in year three,

I read with great admiration about the huge
efforts being made by those keen to ensure
excellent education at senior-school level.
But are two new schools really required, especially as Hasmonean is in the process of developing a larger campus?
I certainly understand creating similar new
schools based on geographic need. What I
understand less is the need to start schools
based on narrow philosophical niches.
There is an alternative to spending huge
sums of money and vast efforts in setting up
and running new schools.
Might it not be better to use that money in
larger schools to attract the best teachers from
around the world and to all give pupils access
to the sorts of opportunities that come only
with economies of scale?
Are we so different that elements within the
community cant find a way to educate as many
of our kids together as possible?

I can be as guilty as anyone else in seeing

problems to the right and left of me and have
moments where I think it would be amazing to
have a school exactly aligned to my specific
ideology.
But then I have a much better vision, where
as many of our children as possible are educated together and benefit from being in
school with a slightly broader demographic.

MY FOND MEMORIES OF
GANTS HILL ODEON
Referring to your recent article about the Jewish
history of the Gants Hill Odeon, I have very fond
memories of the Odeon as a shul and cinema in
the 1960s and 1970s (Jewish News, 2 June).
My wife Barbara and I moved to Gants Hill in
1958, not far from the Odeon in Eastern Avenue. I attended the small shul on the corner of
Wanstead Lane and Beehive Lane but, as the
community grew, the Odeon became the place
for worship for High Holy Days.
Although the services were conducted professionally, I did not like the atmosphere.
As a cinema, we saw many films there. One
evening, my brother-in-law and I battled our
way through a snowstorm, as it was the boys
turn to go to films, to see Billy Bud which must
have been one of the worst films ever made
when halfway through the film, an usherette
shone her torch on us and asked if we would not
mind leaving as no more buses were running
and we were the only ones left in the cinema.
Needless to say, we have never seen the end
of that film.

Heres why Ill be voting

today to remain in the EU
ON EU Referendum decision day, Id like to
share my reasons for voting to Remain with
Jewish News readers.
Elements of the debate, if we are honest,
have not shown British democracy at its finest.
Constituents let me know that. But when
asked why Im voting for Remain, Ive stated
the following reasons:
British business is better off in Europe. The
EU is by far the UKs largest trading partner,
half of our exports go to EU countries, which
are worth more than 220billion a year to our
economy.
We receive an average of 24billion in investment every year from other EU countries,
so walking away from this market or demanding we renegotiate our business relationship
is a risk I do not believe it is worth taking.
If we leave, we will still have to follow the
EUs rules if we want to do business there, but
will not have a say in making the rules.
The Brexit campaign is not able to tell us
exactly how we will balance the books if we
leave the European Union.
Guess-timating is not an approach to
economics or running a business any of us
should feel comfortable with.
When it comes to choosing between the
economic wisdom of Nigel Farage on one
side or the current and previous prime ministers on both the Labour and Tory sides, the
Treasury, the IMF, the OECD, the CBI, the
Bank of England, the trade union movement
and the bosses of major businesses, I know
who I trust our economy with.
On security, an issue important to all of us,

we are better off in Europe.
It often goes unreported, but the EU helps
protect us against crime, terrorism and threats
to our security.
The European Arrest Warrant means we can
arrest people who have committed crimes in
the UK across the EU. More than 1,100 suspected criminals have been returned to face
British justice.
No longer can people skip the country to
an easy retirement overseas.
Now, thanks to the EU and British involvement in the EU, these criminals
face British justice in British
courts.
I for one would hate to see
the capability of the European
Arrest Warrant lost to the UK.
And at a time of heightened security risks, we cannot be renegotiating extradition treaties with
the EU simply to get us back to
where we started from.
As shadow minister for mental health,
I know funding for mental health research is
too low.
Mental health research charity MQ says
that less than 10 is invested in research per
person affected by mental illness some 100
times lower than the amount spent for other
physical health conditions.
Up until 2013, the UK received more than
700million of funding for medical research
projects from the European Unions FP7 pro-
gramme; more than any other EU country.

An additional 60billion of funding has now
been made available to EU countries through
the successor Horizon 2020 programme.
We need to remain in the EU so we can
compete for and win much more of those
funds for mental health research.
In foreign affairs, the UK plays a leading
role within the EU, working to ensure that the
EUs diplomatic relations are engaged with
the world as it is, rather than that of the academic textbooks.
I want the UK to stay in the EU so
that we can continue to play our
role in helping shape the impact that the EU has throughout the world, not least in the
Middle East.
And I am yet to hear one
single member of the Brexit
camp explain how we can
continue to trade with the EU,
yet avoid the obligations of free
movement of people.
Both Switzerland and Norway are
outside the EU, but to gain access they have
accepted free movement of people.
So leaving the EU is not the answer. Instead, we should take practical measures to
deal with rogue employers who take advantage of migrant labour.
Which is why, today, I will vote to Remain.
The Britain I know has a proud place in the
family of nations. With our EU partners, we will
achieve more together than going it alone.

Lets hope Jos death leads

us towards a better politics
NOT SO many weeks ago, I was one of those
people sitting with an Israeli-Scottish friend outside the Max Brenner caf in Tel Avivs lively
Sarona area enjoying a milkshake. I chatted for a
few moments to passer-by Ron Prosor, Israels former ambassador to the Court of St James and
one of the loveliest of men. It was hard to believe
the tranquillity and civilisation of such a place was
shattered by gunfire from Palestinian terrorists,
dressed like bankers, who randomly killed four
people and wounded six others.
June has been a horrific month. In Orlando,
49 people were killed in a gay nightclub by a 29year-old Afghan-American gunman shouting ISIS
slogans. Then one week ago, the quiet of the
West Yorkshire village of Birstall was shattered
when first-term MP, anti-Syrian war campaigner
and mum-of-two, Jo Cox was brutally stabbed and
shot. The alleged assailant, Thomas Mair, 52,
a neo-Nazi sympathiser with reported connections to ultra-right movements in the US and South
Africa, brought Britains passionately contested EU
referendum campaign to a shuddering halt.
In and of themselves, each of these attacks have
no obvious connection. Nevertheless, in each case
the attackers seemed to have acted on their own
(rather than as part of an organised terrorist organisation) and their acts of varying violence could
have profound political consequences.
The Israeli attack received the least attention
in the UK. Indeed, it faded from a crowded
media agenda almost immediately. As often
seems to be the case with terrorism inside Israel,
it was the response a crackdown on Palestinians crossing into Israel during Ramadan that
garnered the most response.
We dont tend to think of Tel Aviv as a terrorist
target because of its secular and polyglot nature.
But this year it has seen several assaults. In January, two Israelis were shot dead outside a Dizengoff Street bar and, in March, a Palestinian went
on a stabbing rampage on the Jaffa waterfront.
In a society scarred by violence since its birth,
the reaction is very different to that in the US and
Britain. Israels approach is to quickly clean up the
crime scene, remove the body parts and blood,
and bring the neighbourhood back to normal as
quickly as possible. Within two days of the violence at Sarona, the countrys tough defence minister Avigdor Lieberman was back at Max
Brenner sipping a cappuccino.
Centre-left Labour MK Shelly Yachimovich cycled to the Max Brenner and declared she had
moved all her days meetings to the Sarona complex. Just outside one of the cafes, Rabbi Joseph
Gerlitzky of Chabad, had set up a stall in case
passers-by wanted to offer a blessing for the dead.
The political fall-out from the terrorist attack
could be profound. It was a reminder to Benjamin
Netanyahu, besieged by expenses scandals, that
the current security situation cannot pertain forever. Eventually, the pressure from outside for
some reopening of peace talks with the Palestinians will become more intense. Or he may have to
consider holding early elections.
The Orlando slaughter also looks to be having
a profound effect on American politics. Some

commentators, notably Britains Owen Jones,
argue that the significance of the attack is that it
is the largest killing in the LGBT community since
the Second World War. In US politics, it was the
moment when Donald Trump went too far. He
instantly justified, on Twitter, his assertion that there
should be a total ban on Muslims entering the US.
Never mind that the attacker Omar Mateen
was a home-grown Muslim and seems to have
been in a muddle about which terrorist group
he supported and to have had personal issues
around his own sexuality. Politically, it has been
an advantage to Trumps opponent, Hillary
Clinton, as the Republicans opportunism looks
to have gone down badly with voters and
failed to win over his allies in Congress.
The assassination of Cox in Yorkshire, in a
nation where deadly violence is relatively rare, has
been a profound shock. The popularity of the MP
and the causes she bravely brought to the floor
of the Commons made her a special person.
Indeed, enough of one to put David Cameron
and Jeremy Corbyn side-by-side in Birstall.
Her death was almost certainly the work of a
disturbed lone wolf. But it has drawn attention
to a troubling, acrimonious trend in the British
public debate where rivalry can spill over into hatred whipped up by social media.
It would be nice to think that her sacrifice
like violence in Tel Aviv and Orlando could be
an opening to a less hostile, more understanding
political discourse.

Jos murder was the hideous

culmination of hateful debate
LAST THURSDAY, a vibrant light was brutally
snuffed out, decades before her time. Many
of us who knew Jo Cox and know her husband
Brendan will be desperately seeking reason in
this insanity for years to come.
Much will undoubtedly be written in
the coming months about our politics,
the weakness of the centre ground and power
of extremes to drive the agenda. How our
politics has descended into a hate-filled abyss
where the best of our politicians was assassinated while working for the people she was
elected to serve.
But in the aftermath of such horror, it falls on
us to step up to ensure that hope beats hate,
that faith in our democracy and our politicians
beats the politics of fear and division.
And in order to do that, and to ensure that
there is a way forward, we need to understand
the enormity of what has happened and the
priorities of people who may seek to exploit
our pain and Jos murder.
While we do not yet know the full background of the evil murderer who stole Jo from
us that will emerge in due course enough
details have already come to light in the national media to raise concerns about extremism thriving in our society.
Our country is clearly divided. At no time
in our history would we have considered ourselves to be more tolerant, of race, of faith,
of sexuality. But conversely, you only have to
look at the rise of the BNP and then the rise
of UKIP for evidence of a desire of a new form
of populist politics with simple answers to difficult questions the simple answers always
being linked to a scapegoat, immigrants,
Muslims the other.
While across the Atlantic, Donald Trump
has cruised to victory with a commitment
to wall off America from the world, here
in Britain, we have been busily erecting
our own walls; barriers of ignorance and
mistrust, which divide us from our fellow citizens and harden us to the suffering of our
neighbours.
These fears and divisions have reached
fever pitch in recent weeks, as the divisions
over Europe have begun to tear at the fabric
of our common life. Words have impact and
deeds have consequences.
This tragedy is not an isolated event; it is
the hideous culmination of the politics of hate
which has moved quietly into the heart of our
public discourse.
When racist propaganda can be unveiled to
public acceptance, when the tabloid media
use their platform to dehumanise and distort,
when bigotry is wrapped in the flag and
worn like a badge of honour, the atmosphere
curdles and the darkest elements of our
society are exposed.
The end result is a politics rooted in
hatred and barbarism, an ideology that can
snatch a mother from her children and call it
patriotism.
It is a movement that finds its roots in the
impotence and inadequacies of its adherents
a swastikaed comfort blanket for sordid

little men unable to cope with the realities of
the modern world. It is a howl of rage from
the detritus of human progress.
The intensity of this politics of hatred is
frightening to behold, a stark contrast to
the moderation and understanding that still
underpins our wider society.
It may seem at first glance to uphold Yeats
observation: The best lack all conviction,
while the worst are full of passionate intensity.
But if the remarkable outpouring of love
and solidarity in the wake of Jos murder has
proved anything, it is that the politics of hate
cannot and will not win.
In mistaking moderation for a lack of
conviction, in mistaking love for weakness,
the peddlers of racism and fear have underestimated the ties that bind our nation
together.
The people who believed that these acts
of terror would prove the catalyst for a race
war in our country will find their ambitions
thwarted, one more disappointment in a life
defined by failure.
We are the many. The overwhelming majority of us will come together to stand even
firmer against racism and injustice. We will
honour the memory of those who gave their
lives to improve the lives of others.
And we will celebrate our own good fortune to have had the chance to have known
a woman like Jo, and to have spent a moment
in her light.

solidarity in the wake of Jos
murder has proved that the
politics of hate will not win
Tanks for the wrong memories

Netanyahus cynical PR stunt
THERE IS spin, there is counter-spin, and there
is downright duplicity. You get to choose
which is which.
Earlier this year Benjamin Netanyahu went to
the Kremlin for a meeting with Vladimir Putin.
The Russian president, it is fair to say, doesnt
have many friends in the West, so the two men
have much in common. Usually, in these kind
of talks, there is some sort of sweetener thrown
in perhaps to mask what is going on behind
the headlines. Ostensibly, Vlad and Bibi were
discussing strategic understanding over military co-ordination in Syria, Moscows old ally.
The sweetener, in this case, was a tank. And
not just any tank, but a tank which has been on
display for decades in a Moscow military museum. An Israeli tank captured during the notorious battle of Sultan Yacoub in Lebanon in
1982. Could he, Bibi ventured, have the tank
back? Hed like to have it for the IDF military
museum at Latrun. In the battle of Sultan Yacoub, in which 30 Israelis were killed, it wasnt
just Israeli tanks captured by Syrian forces, but
three soldiers: Zacharia Baumel, Yehuda Katz
and Zvi Feldman. The three, and their tank,
were paraded through the streets of Damascus
after their capture, and that was their last known
appearance. Officially listed as Missing in Action, they have long been presumed dead, but
their bodies have never been recovered.
On 29 May a triumphant prime minister made
the following announcement: I thank Russian
President Vladimir Putin for acceding to my

request to return to Israel the tank from the battle of Sultan Yacoub. To the families of MIAs
Zechariah Baumel, Zvi Feldman and Yehudah
Katz, there has been nothing to remember the
boys by and no grave to visit for 34 years now.
The tank is the only evidence of the battle
and now it is coming back to Israel thanks to
President Putins response to my request.
So what do we think about this tank? Or
rather, the tank from the battle of Sultan
Yacoub? Do we think that as we were clearly
meant to think that it was the tank in which
Baumel, Katz and Feldman had been serving,
which was then paraded through Damascus?
Well, more fool us. For as the prime ministers
spokesman carefully explained last week, Israel
at no point claimed the tank was the one
manned by the missing soldiers. We said it was
a tank from the battle of Sultan Yacoub and
evidence from the battlefield, and this is what
the prime minister told the families. No one
ever claimed that this was the tank manned by
the three, an official said in a statement.
The spokesman was obliged to make this
weaselly statement because as soon as the tank
arrived in Israel, experts took one look at it and
concluded that it could not possibly have been
the one in which the three had served.
The tank now housed in the Latrun museum
has no marks showing that it was hit; expert
Danny Kriaf said that the tank that was re-
turned had the number 817581, while the

tank of the missing [men] had another number; and the Israeli army knew as long ago as
18 years ago that the tank in Moscow was not
the one in which the missing men had served.
So did Bibi know this was the wrong tank? The
jury is out. Certainly, from his words at a handover ceremony at the Moscow museum, he was
still talking about it as though it were the tank run
by the thee Israeli MiAs.Thanking Putin for his
warm humanitarian gesture, Bibi vowed Israel
would not rest until it also located the three soldiers. Not known for his warm humanitarian gestures, isnt Mr Putin. One of two things appears
to have happened. Perhaps the Russian leader,
searching for a sweetener, decided to give Bibi
any old tank. Yeah, yeah, went the word in the
Kremlin, give the Israelis this tank, we dont need
it, and theyll never know the difference.
Or perhaps it was Bibi who wanted to bring
something tangible back from his Moscow
talks, and hit on the idea of the return of the
tank and allowing people to believe it was the
tank of the three missing men.
Either way, it was a deeply cynical episode
which has hugely hurt the families of the three
men, who have desperately campaigned for
some clue to their fate all those years ago. It
leaves a nasty taste and far from giving the families some kind of closure, it has had precisely
the opposite effect. Like I said, there is spin, and
downright duplicity. You choose.

Camp Simcha conquers canyon

A group of adventurers raised more than 80,000 for Camp Simcha by Conquering the Canyon. The 21strong team, aged between 21 and 67, undertook the charity's first overseas challenge a four-day, 36-mile
trek, descending 2,100 feet into the Grand Canyon, to help fund its work supporting families coping with
serious childhood illness. Chief executive Neville Goldschneider said: We often talk about our supporters
going the extra mile for us, but that is an understatement for our amazing Conquer the Canyon trekkers.

Shalva friends raise 250k

British Friends of Shalva welcomed more than
200 guests to its annual dinner at the Montcalm
Marble Arch. The audience heard from Dr Ariel
Tenenbaum, director of the training and
education at Shalvas new national centre.
Ambassador Mark Regev was the special
guest, saying: Everyone who has come to to
support Shalva can be proud of representing
the highest values our heritage teaches us,
making a real difference in the lives of real
people. The evening was chaired by Michelle
Shemtob and guests were left mesmerised by
renowned mentalist Lior Suchard, who
received a standing ovation. The evening

Cameron loves Jewish Care

Prime Minister David Cameron expressed his love for Jewish Care
at the charitys annual dinner, which raised 5.1million on
Monday. As he took to the stage, Cameron was greeted by a
standing ovation, and he told the audience that, despite it
being an exceptionally busy week, this Grosvenor House Hotel
engagement was one he was always going to keep. I want to
say some simple things. The first thing is I love you. I love Jewish
Care and I love what you do, he said. So much of it epitomises
what I am getting at when I talk about big society. The evening,
which was attended by 1,000 people, was brought to a close by
former X Factor winner Leona Lewis. Speaking after the event,
Jewish Care president Lord Levy said: It was a truly special
evening. A night that both showcased the vital work of Jewish
Care and celebrated the way we as a community come
together to provide care and support for those who need it.

An Israeli charity for injured soldiers raised almost 1million for

its new Ashdod rehab centre during last weeks fundraiser at
the Dorchester. Beit Halochem UK welcomed 420 guests to
the luxury hotel last Tuesday, with special guests including
Israeli ambassador Mark Regev and foreign policy analyst
Prof Peter Neumann from Kings College. The latter warned
of radicalisation and the unprecedented number of
people leaving Europe to fight for Islamic State, which
operates in Iraq and Syria. Radicalisation will remain serious
for some time to come and its a complex operation dealing
with it, he said. Governments and civil society have to do
more. Muslim society has to step up. Amputee and motherof-three volunteer Einat Malka said of the charitys work:
We pull them back when they are falling apart. They begin
their journey weak but we make them strong.

Francine Wolfisz chats to young hyperrealist artist Jordan Dawson about

his scintillating debut solo exhibition
t first glance, you could be forgiven for

thinking you are looking at high resolution
photographs of celebrities and models.
But these stunning pictures are in fact pencil etchings drawn by Borehamwood artist Jordan Dawson.
Known as hyper-realism, the technique produces detailed and refined drawings, paintings
and sculptures that closely resemble shots taken
by the humble camera.
The 21-year-old, who will shortly be going into his
third year of a fine art degree at Chelsea College of
Arts, has just unveiled his first solo show at The Reel
Cinema in Borehamwood. On display are 21 of
Dawsons incredible creations, which can be viewed
in the cinema foyer until 21 July.
Speaking about his art, Dawson revealed he
was bullied at school for being overweight until
he was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago and,
as such, wanted to explore the importance of
appearance in his latest work.
The former JFS pupil said: Im looking at how
people judge others too quickly based on their
appearance. So, for example, I took photos from
male fashion magazines and I drew them in the
style of a mugshot. You instantly get the perception that they are a bad person but you only
think that way, because its in the style of a
mugshot, not who they are.
His work has provoked interest on social media
and prompted a comment from model Iskra
Lawrence, which was seen by her 2.1 million followers on Instagram. Explaining why his art made such
an impact, Dawson says: Iskra was turned away by
many modelling agents because of her size, even

though shes only a 12, and she was categorized as
a plus size. She was eventually picked up by Aerie,
the American Eagle underwear brand, and insists
that her pictures are not Photoshopped in any way.
Because of that she got bullied and received abuse.
The Barnet Synagogue member also revealed he
found solace in art after struggling academically at
school and was only tested for dyslexia three years
ago. I was always getting As and Bs, but I struggled. I remember in English class we had to read
for the first 15 minutes, but I just remember staring
at the book and I couldnt concentrate, he says.
Today, putting all his energies into his passion for
art, Dawson says he is happy to sit at his desk perfecting his hyper-realist works, which for his bigger
pictures can take hundreds of hours to produce.
It depends on the size, but an ordinary piece
can take 15 to 30 hours to finish. My picture of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt took me over 300 hours!
I do time myself, but that doesnt really come into
consideration. When Im drawing, Im so relaxed
and into my own world that the time just flies.
Dawson hopes to replicate his detail in painting,
as well as pencil drawings and is focused on finishing his art degree. Theres also talk of possibly one
day collaborating with his brother, Alex, 24, who
is also an artist and currently working on an adult
cartoon series for Netflix.

Francine Wolfisz chats to celebrated Israeli Mizrahi singer Shlomi Shabat,

ahead of his one-off London gig to raise money and smiles for Variety Israel
head of performing in London,

singer Shlomi Shabat reveals his
concert will mark a series of firsts
for the man known as Israels musical
treasure.
Although he has entertained private
audiences with his lively Mizrahi music in
the UK capital before, his show on 11 July
will be the first time he has performed at
a West End venue alongside a live band.
More importantly for the well-known
composer and musician, whose albums sell
into the hundreds of thousands, the concert marks his first overseas concert for
childrens charity, Variety Israel, a cause
that is close to his heart.
The 62-year-old, who has written a song
especially for the event and says he is
a friend of Variety for life, explains: Ive
had a deep connection with [the charity]
for years. This is my first overseas show for
Variety, voluntarily and with love.
I am a personal friend of Udi Angel
[Variety Israels president]. Hes a dear man
and you cant say no to him.
With a successful career now spanning
25 years, Shabat who is a mentor on The
Voice Israel comes from a musical family.
He was born in Yehud, just outside Tel
Aviv, to parents originally from Turkey.
My parents would always sing around
the house, he recalls. My sister, Leah
Shabat, is a very famous singer in Israel
and my daughter [Manor] is also very
musically talented in fact, she is coming
with me to London to sing with the band
at the Variety concert.
Even his son, Avihu, has inherited
Shabats vocal talents and is himself a
rising talent on Israels music scene.
Shabat cites his musical influences as
Matti Caspi, Arik Einstein, Yehoram Gaon,
Shlomo Artzi, as well as more recent
artists, such as Eyal Golan, Moshe Peretz
and Yehuda Poliker.
His breakthrough moment came in 1989,
following the release of his single Because
Of The Wind, which was composed by his

sister.
Shabat, who sings in Hebrew, Turkish
and Spanish, says: It really became a very
famous hit, but luckily its not my only one
and I managed to keep using my creativity
and producing more songs.
He adds that he enjoys composing, but
revealed his mood has a huge influence on
the tone of the song, as does the political
climate in Israel.
I really enjoy writing songs in good
periods of my life, but the most beautiful
songs that I wrote were in times of sadness and hurt, he explains. Recently I am
not writing as much, as I find it hard to be
creative during this period in Israel filled
by terror and hate.
Over the years, his music has meandered across a number of styles, such as
South American, salsa, gypsy, rock, as well
as Sephardic, all of which can be heard on
his impressive collection of 12 studio albums and five concert albums.
Does he have any particular favourites
from his collection? Its extremely hard
for me to pick my favourite song or album
as I treat them like my children and you
cant pick a favourite child but of my
songs, they would be Biglal Haruach, Aba,
Lechol Echad and Yesh Lach.
I would say my favourite album is
Haverim, as I collaborated with many
different artists the young, the new and
the ones I grew up with.
Recently becoming a very proud
grandfather my phone is full of photographs of my granddaughter Shabat
adds he is really excited to be
London-bound.
Its a very important performance to me and Im going to give
everything. Im really excited to
fill the audience with a feeling of
being home for a few hours.

Judge Robert Rinder talks to Francine Wolfisz about his new series, why he
had to hide in a cupboard and a toothless busker in a lime-green mankini
ince Judge Robert Rinder burst onto

daytime television two years ago, his
astutely-crafted courtroom put-downs
have become legendary.
They range from the dismissive Youve got
about as much chance of getting that as me
jumping out of an aircraft doing jazz hands
to the more succinct: Please get to the
point before I fall into a coma.
But if you ask the witty criminal barrister
what he would really love to say, it would
involve the use of Yiddish.
Speaking to Jewish News to coincide with
his new series, Judge Rinders Crime Stories, the
38-year-old barrister, reveals: Im very, very
proud to be Jewish and say so, wherever I go.
Jewishness is completely central to my identity
and at the epicentre of our family. I just wish
I could use more of my knowledge of
Yiddish the programme.
Sadly, we just dont have
the audience. People
dont know what I mean when I say:

So and sos not a bad boy, hes not wicked, hes
not nasty, hes just a lobbos! Its wonderful;
people would know exactly what you mean.
I ask Rinder, who grew up in a traditional Jewish family in Southgate, if he would contemplate
slipping in meshuganah or shmerel in forthcoming episodes?
Meshuganah, thats a great word, but no,
I think its a little bit too much, replies Rinder
lightheartedly. The problem with Jewish insults
is they are quite insulting, so I wouldnt call
anyone a meshuganah or a shmerel well,
maybe a shmerel sometimes. When a person
gives someone 5,000, doesnt put it in writing
and then comes to court expecting an enforceable contract, you could say, youre a shmerel.
Wouldnt that be wonderful? I think Ill try it.
Described as a cross between Jeremy Kyle and
Judge Judy, Rinder takes pains to explain that
all cases are completely real and authentic
even the one involving a 74-year-old toothless

busker, a lime-green mankini and an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction at a battle of

the bands.
He came out to the audience and all of
his privacy was on display, Rinder reveals in
trying to explain the background to this
case, which prompted even laughter from
the presiding judge himself.
But his latest foray in television is something of a departure and more closely
connected to his experience as a criminal
barrister for 15 years.
Rinder, who gained a first-class ho-
nours degree at Manchester University

(where he became good friends with actor
Benedict Cumberbatch), has been involved
in a string of high-profile fraud and criminal
cases, including the manslaughter of detainees
in Iraq by British servicemen. He also represented one of the four men charged with
the 2003 murders of Letisha Shakespeare and
Charlene Ellis.
Speaking about the new ITV1 series, Judge
Rinders Crime Stories, he said: It takes a
look at the most serious cases you will have
read about in the newspapers, some of which
really shocked the nation murder, bigamy
and fraud. You may have read the stories, but
you wont know the inside detail of what happened, so the cases are re-enacted in real-life
drama and youll also hear from the police
officers investigating the case, the scientists
who were involved and sometimes the victims
themselves.
I ask him why, as a legal professional who has
been involved in a number of these cases, he
thinks crime stories capture the imagination of
the public.
I think thats a really interesting question
and its because crime involves the worst things
that the mind can imagine and represents
human drama at its most extreme, he explains.
Its also about solving a crime and how that
crime came about. So it deals with every facet of
human life and I think thats why people are so
interested.
I ask if he has ever become emotionally
involved in any of the cases to which he has been
attached.
The well-spoken Rinder, who married his
partner also a lawyer in Ibiza three years ago,
tells me: As a barrister, your main job is to
be involved with the law and to advance your
clients case, regardless of what you think,
because you are a hired mouthpiece for
your client. Sometimes that can be terribly
challenging.
The reality is, from time to time, a witness
will come to court, who you are cross examining, and it can get very emotional. Your job
is to do your best and remain dispassionate.
I have to tell you, sometimes its the cases you
least expect. But any barrister will be affected
at least once in their career by something and
Im no exception.
In recent months, Judge Rinder beat off This
Morning to win best daytime programme at
this years Royal Television Society awards, with
judges calling it incredibly watchable, distinctive and entertaining.
Rinder tells me he is really proud of the
programme and is glad he took the opportunity
to front his own show. Plus, he would never have
otherwise have experienced being chased into a
cupboard backstage.
That is true, laughs Rinder. Right at
the beginning of the show, I dont think they
had organised the security properly, so one
of the litigants Id flung out of court for being
a complete moron had decided to go on some
unhappy rampage.
He managed to get mildly close, but happily
there was a closet between me and him. It was
certainly a first for us all.

House heats up, Hillary
Clinton has become the first
female nominee for President
of the United States.
So, what does the Torah say
about women leaders?
Biblically, men and women
may lead the community
equally. It is not until Maimonides that there appears
to be a distinction drawn and
that women are forbidden to
take the mantle of what is
known as serarah.
The key to understanding
this term provides the
answer to our question.
Serarah is an authoritarian
form of leadership which,
once conferred, allows the
ruler to make decisions which
are executive and against
which checks and balances are
almost impossible.
The Book of Esther reinforces the idea that the male
must be the dominant figure
in the home, and uses the term
of dominance to describe
that element of authoritarian
decision-making, which is the
HILLARY

preserve of the man in Persian

thought: that each man must
be the sorer the ruler in his
home and speak the language
of his people.
It appears from the conjoined phrase that the reason
for the last word being
reserved in the home for the
man is that in his capacity, the
male is the one through whom
the line of tradition passes.
As to leading the community, the example of Deborah
the prophetess in her capacity
as judge and military leader of
Israel, clearly shows up as an
exception to the expectation
that dominant rule of the community is the preserve of men.
There is evidence from
scripture that she asked Barak
to accompany her, and
consulted with him, but she
insisted that Israel would be
delivered into the hand of a
woman.
The expression used for her
leadership is not authoritarian
domination, serarah, but a
form of legal appointment
shiput which carried with it
an intimation that she arose
as a leader by consensual
recognition as the head
of a tribal confederacy and
not as demagogic ruler with

THE WEATHER has been pretty miserable

recently, but its still out of place to talk about
Chanukah in June.
After last weeks 176-verse marathon
primarily discussing the chanukah or inauguration of the Mishkan, this weeks sedra,
Behaalotecha, starts with the laws of lighting
the menorah.
Its seems like the great British summer has
Bibilical precedence!
The key to understanding the significance
of the menorah that was lit every evening in
the Mishkan lies in the statements in the
Talmud that liken both the oil and the flames
to wisdom.
The menorah is the sign of spiritual and
intellectual excellence that stands in front of
the holy of holies together with the material
bounty of the lechem hapanim (show bread).
This powerful symbolism teaches us that
Judaism is not a religion that seeks to deny
the physical world, rather it elevates material
existence to a spiritual plane through imbuing our day to day lives with meaning and
relevance.

The term Behaalotecha et hanerot literally means when you kindle the lamps,
but Rashi points out that the mitzvah is to
light the lamps until the flame ascends by

Each of us has something that is unique

that we can shine and make a contribution to
the world that cannot be made by anyone
else.
This is the theme of the book of Bamidbar,
each tribe with its unique banner, its individuality, marching in unison towards the promised land.
Jewish education is more than just imparting information, it is chinuch, dedication,
the goal of which is to enable people
to know themselves and make their own
informed choice to be actively involved in
shaping a bright Jewish future.
This is a message that is not just for
Chanukah... its for life!

THIS WEEK: Ruth

OVER THE festival of Shavuot, we read the
Book of Ruth. There is so much to be learnt from
this story and from such a great and inspirational
woman. We learn much about loyalty and dedication even in the face of adversity. Ruth had to
give up so much for what she believed in, refusing to leave her mother-in-laws side and giving
up her high position as a Moabite princess to
become part of the Jewish people.
Ruth clearly knew what she believed in
strongly and was willing to do whatever it took
to attain it. This was at the expense of not having an easy life and one fraught with challenges,
but is it still considered a successful life?
How many times are we told that were only
truly living if were having a good time? Or for
us to attain true greatness we need to change
the world? We no longer accept just living a
peaceful life, we want to be exceptional or
celebrities and nothing else will do.
However, the majority of us feel that we are
just part of the rat race and that we have no
real purpose or meaning. At times, we may become despondent and feel that the minutiae of
life that are considered tedious, such as going

to work, community life and even building a
family, are ultimately uninspiring activities and
may even be seen as underachieving.
Ruth would have had every right to feel the
same way. She had lost everything and was
reduced to the life of a pauper.
Lets fast forward to the end of the story.
Were told that Ruth and Boaz had a son who
became the grandfather of one of our greatest
leaders, King David.
Life, a real life, is precisely made up of the
mundane everyday events, such as earning a living and raising children. In the same way that a
cheesecake is made of ingredients that on their
own are unpalatable but the combined result is
something creamy and delicious so, too, our
lives are made of many struggles and challenges as we experience the highs of success
and the lows of failure, which all come together
to make a meaningful life worth living.
The most that any one of us can do is make
as many right choices as we can and live as significant a life as possible. Not always will we
direct success from our hard work, but it is
specifically at these moments that we should
remember Ruth and have faith that the choices
we make today will have a great and far reaching impact on the world of tomorrow.

ATROCITIES LIKE the Orlando attack
have been happening for generations. But in a world of social media,
cheap travel and globalised communities, they now bring devastation
into ones own back yard.
Instead of affecting random people in faraway lands, many of us in
the LGBTQI+ community knew
someone who lost their life or was
injured or present at Pulse on that
terrible night
If we didnt, we probably know
someone who did. Regardless, we
were profoundly affected.
The world has cried out and, as a
British gay man who remembers the
nail bomb on Old Compton Street in
1999, I have noticed how society has
moved forward.
Back then, the event was met with
fear and not reported with nearly as
much sympathy. There were no vigils across the globe and not every
nations leader spoke out in horror.
Fewer people may have died, but
the intent was the same to maim
and kill innocent people solely because of their sexuality.
Having grown up within an Orthodox tradition, although now a member of the Liberal movement, I was
glad to read Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis
speak out against the violence in Orlando and homophobia in general.
At the same time, however, like

Its great that you condemn mass
murder, but I have to ask the Chief
Rabbi if this was really the time to
discuss your Toraic interpretations
on the gay issue?
This point of view makes it difficult to feel that the United Synagogue wants a welcoming
environment for all Jews, regardless of their level of religious observance, ethnicity or sexuality.
As I wrote this, I happened to be
in Tel Aviv and stumbled across a
gay bar called Evita, which was
holding a ceremony in honour of
those who fell at the club in Florida.
It was a small gathering of men
and women, gay and straight, Orthodox, Progressive and secular,
Jewish and non-Jewish.
This was not a large vigil in the
street where thousands left candles, but a small group who sat and
listened to speakers and singers
and stood in silence, thinking about
those who had lost their lives and
the families who grieved.
I just hope that during these dark
times, the families of those who
were killed in the attack can find
some kind of comfort in these thousands of small gatherings, where
people show their kindness and
support in the only way they can.

IM TIRTZU (If you will it), Ein
zo agadah (It is not a dream).
These familiar words of
Theodor Herzl echo in my ears.
I remember singing them as
a teenager in Israel with my Reform Zionist youth movement
I recall reciting them every
time we celebrate the independence of Israel.
Herzl in many ways is an unlikely hero; he was a quiet unhealthy man with a tragic
family story who died young.
Yet with all that, he managed
to change the course of Jewish
history.
His remarkable ability to see
the reality as it is and lead
change provides a masterclass

to us all. But for me, his legacy
extends well beyond leading
and establishing the Zionist
movement.
ANOTHER DAY, another tragedy.

I remember checking Twitter last Thursday, after wildly celebrating Daniel Sturridges winning goal for England against
Wales. I was filled with joy and feeling a
sense of camaraderie with other pub goers.
It really was #togetherforengland.
For one brief moment there was unity. The
referendum that seemed to be driving this
country to insanity was forgotten but all
that came crashing to a halt when I saw the
breaking news that MP Jo Cox had been
shot and stabbed.
Questions ran through my mind. Why had
this happened and more importantly, how
could this happen?
As a movement worker for LJY-Netzer,
Liberal Judaism's youth movement, we try
to instil hope into our members that the
world may not be perfect, but if we do just
a little then maybe we can make it a better
place and bring it closer to the world as it
should be.
The more I read about Jo Cox, the more it
seemed she thought that way too.
She worked for an anti-slavery charity and
used her time as an MP to fight for child
refugees in Syria.
She fought for those who could not fight
for themselves.
That is what more of us need to do, that is
what we try to instil in the young people that
we interact with, whether thats standing up
to the class bully or taking part in campaigns.
Before this tragedy, I did not know much
about Jo or her work, but now her legacy will
always be with me, pushing me to be better
and to try to make what seems a dark world
at the moment just a little bit brighter.
Jo Cox MP truly was a light unto the nations. Let her memory be a blessing...

Old New Land), in which he describes his vision of a utopian
Jewish state, Herzl laid the
foundations of the ethics and
the values of this new nation.
His vision was of a nation
that would be a sanctuary to
persecuted Jews, but would
also be modern and open
minded, valuing the contributions of all its citizens.
He pictures an exemplary
society in which all inhabitants
are equal, including the native
Arabs who dwelled in this land
for many generations.
In his vision of a Jewish
homeland, their rights would
be protected and he believed

they must be a viable and active part of the new society.
This vision inspires me still
and along with the wording of
Israels Declaration of Independence encourages me to
work in pursuit of peace.
In recent years, some groups
in Israel claim to represent
Herzl's vision to promote a discourse of hatred and discrimination. In my opinion this could
not be further away from Herzl's
vision of equality and solidarity.
Benjamin Zeev Herzl is a true
hero whom history remembers
not merely as a politician, but
as a visionary.

SHOW STOPPER!
The new Teatro restaurant and bar at The Radlett Centre is

fast becoming a much-loved destination in the locality.
Managed by brother and sister Robert and Sue, its a
favourite with visitors to the theatre and those looking for
a place to meet up. Check out the superfood salad and
delicious healthy smoothies, plus indulgent dishes such
as baked camembert and mouth-watering cakes. There
are also egg dishes, a great range of sandwiches and
salads, plus filled jacket potatoes.
BAKE EXPECTATIONS
Michelle Eshkeri recently relocated
her Lavender Bakery from her
home to stylish new premises
on East End Road, in East
Finchley, complete with seating
area. The totally vegetarian Margot
Bakery (named after Michelles
and her husbands
grandmothers) offers a dailychanging menu of soup, sandwiches, salads, bread
and cakes, with excellent coffee. The babka and
sourdough challah are not to be missed, and
Michelle also makes fantastic celebration cakes.
Our son Ethan, 16, was most disgruntled when Mum

and Dad went to a cool place in town, leaving him to
revise. This only added to our pleasure of the Thursday
night treat that was a trip to Indigo at One Aldwych.
This sophisticated restaurant is gluten and dairy
free, an added bonus along with the tasteful
decor, attentive yet unobtrusive service, and
delicious food. In a first for the British hotel
dining scene, chef Dominic Teague
(lEscargot, Sandy Lane Barbados) quietly

cut gluten and dairy from the menu a few

months ago, and diners havent noticed.
He uses almond milk, coconut oil, buckwheat flour, olive oil and rice milk to maintain creamy, buttery flavours and light
textures. The concise menu has good options for those who dont eat meat.
Once seated in the very comfortable
armchairs, the waiter came to talk wine.
He would bring us some whites to try. I
nipped to the loo, but two flights down
didnt make for a quick trip and, by the
time I returned, my husband/driver had
already sent back the Sauvignon Blanc for
being sour (its dry, Tony). Nor was he
keen on the Pinot Gris. At this rate, we
would be having Palwin No 4 with our
soup. Not for the first time, I told him to
butt out and by our main course we were
happily drinking a rather cheeky Chablis.
The onion and samphire bread with
rapeseed oil was cakey in texture and very
tasty. I ventured out of my comfort zone
for starters and ordered watercress soup
with a poached egg. I was expecting a
pale watery affair, so was totally blown
away by the deliciously thick, verdant
broth. Tonys cured salmon was also a hit.

A Facebook group with 11,000 members is

always going to be lively with differing opinions.
So a simple Wheres the best place for
afternoon tea in London? request ends up
with 100-plus responses. The Ham Yard wins
hands down for best-value London hotel tea.
With its plush surroundings, quirky own-brand
china and really interesting sandwiches and
pastries, its hard to beat. The Mad Hatters Tea
at the Sanderson wins in the themed tea stakes,
and when it comes to elegance and tradition,
Claridges and the Ritz are joint front runners,
with the Langham getting lots of mentions too,
especially since the fab refurb. This week, there
was a request for recommendations for tea in
Norfolk and even this garnered lots of responses.
Who knew that a north London-based group
could be so resourceful?
A FOODIE FESTIVAL
Gefiltefest lands at JW3 this Sunday, with a mindblowing schedule of talks, demonstrations and stalls, all
based around food. Lots of restaurants are featured on
the day: Palomar chef Tomer Amedi is performing a
demo assisted by Masterchef finalist Emma Spitzer, The
Spectator restaurant critic Tanya Gold interviews Daniel
Morgenthau, co-owner of Portland, while Or Golan
(Soyo) will demonstrate how to make
heavenly desserts using halva.

chips and I chose turbot with roast cauliflower pure, grapes and wood sorrel, as
its not something we often have at home.
We happily stole dessert off each others
plates lemon cake with hazelnut praline;
caramelised banana, custard and chocolate
sorbet. No gluten, no dairy, no problem.
A delightful evening and if Ethan gets all
A stars in his GCSEs, well happily take him
there. As well as the a la carte menu, there
are great value set menus for lunch and pre
theatre it is, of course, the ideal location

Movie sequels and book sequels often fall into the

not as good as the original trap, but this is rarely
the case with restaurants. Of course, everyone
loves an original, but when I went to the newlyopened second branch of Ostuni in Highgate
earlier this month, I knew immediately I was going
to love it just as much as its quirky parent restaurant in Queens Park.
Ostuni has taken over the site formerly
occupied by Zizzi. Its a great space large with
lots of natural light, buzzy but not too noisy.
Plus its easy to park. Owner Robert
Claassen is so passionate about authenticity that he ordered white stone to be
shipped over from Locorotondo to line the
walls of his Italian restaurant, which makes
for a beautifully rustic interior.
And now to the food. This is Puglianstyle Italian cooking, which means it originates from the south of the country and its
not your usual veal Milanese/ lasagne/penne
arrabiata menu. Its much, much more interesting.
The antipasti are designed for sharing, although
I rather wanted to keep the burrata with

aubergine, pepper and tomato to myself and, to
be honest, hubby was pretty selfish with the crispy
baked salt cod and the mini calzone with smoked
mozzarella. He did let me try his grilled veal chop,
and I was generous to him with my whole sea
bream baked in salt crust (it was huge!) and we
shared a portion of the most terrific courgette.
As always, no room for dessert and, as always,
we succumbed anyway. Im a tiramisu fan and
theres no saying no to Ostunis version, while
the semifreddo with bitter orange and chocolate
was a must-have for hubby. The wine list focuses
on Puglian table wines, plus fine Barolos from
Piedmont, Brunellos from Tuscany and Pinot
Biancos from Friuli.
I have a hunch Ostuni is going to do very well in
its new home.

Getting a little kick out

of the beautiful game
WITH THE MEDIA focus
on Euro 2016 at an alltime high, youd be forgiven for thinking that
football is just a TV programme. However, Little
Kickers are here to remind you that football is
to be played and enjoyed by all.
Running fun-filled football
sessions designed for boys and
girls aged 18 months - 7 years,
children are split into the following age groups: Little Kicks (18
months-2 years), Junior Kickers (2-3 years), Mighty Kickers (3 - 5 years) and Mega
Kickers (ages 5 & 6).
The sessions have been built
by industry experts and FA qualified coaches, with games within
the sessions following the early
learning objectives such as
colour recognition, numeracy
and body parts. Little Kickers
has games that develop the allimportant basic skills such asso-
cial interaction, balance/coordination and following instructions, the aim being to teach the
FUNdamentals of football in a
fun andenergetic surrounding.

football and futsal sides
The football team celebrate their 1-0 win over Germany, on their way to securing silver in Spain
MACCABI GBS football and futsal teams both won silver at the
2016 European Maccabi Football Trophy (EMFT) in Spain.
European Jewish footballers
and futsal players from Maccabi
France, Maccabi Germany, Maccabi Holland and Maccabi Spain
took part in the three-day tournament, as more than 200 players headed to the Costa del Sol
for the biennial competition.
With all countries playing
each other in a league format,
things started badly for Team GB
on the pitch as Daniel Shafrons
team lost 4-1 to France in their
opening game, Zak Neiman netting GBs consolation, as they fell
to the bottom of the table.
However, they hit back immediately thanks to an emphatic 90 win over Spain. Daniel
Garfinkle hit a hat-trick, with Zak
McLeod adding a brace in what
was an all-round outstanding
performance.
After a traditional Maccabi
Shabbat that night and Saturday,
the sport resumed on Sunday

with MGB exacting revenge on
Germany for a defeat at last
summers European Maccabi
Games in Berlin. Dovi Fehler got
the games sole goal, and with
other results going their way,
MGB secured runners-up spot
for the second-consecutive
EMFT.
In the futsal, a Matt Stock-inspired performance saw them
beat Spain 6-4 in their opening
fixture, before they fell to a 6-0
defeat to a talented France
team. They bouced back with a
resounding 9-3 victory against
Jewish futsal specialists, Holland, which saw player-manager
Daniel Tannenbaum mirroring
Matt Stock from the previous
game, bagging a hat-trick. Leor
Harel and Matt Stock hit two
apiece with Jonathan Horwitz
and Daniel Warwick completing
the scoring. A final-day win
against Madrid saw GB confirmed as silver medalists.
Maccabi France proved to be
the dominant force as they retained their title in the open

football competition, as well as
claiming gold in the futsal event.
MGBs football manager
Daniel Shafron said: All round it
was a fantastic experience for
everyone involved. The squad
did themselves proud on and off
the pitch and I couldnt have
asked for a better group of boys
to share this experience with.
Were very proud of our achievements.
Futsal manager Daniel Tanenbaum said: This is a huge
achievement for our team and
MGB futsal as a whole. Our team
of six had never played the sport
competitively before and we
beat two established Maccabiah
teams in Spain and Holland.
Every player put in their shift and
got on the score sheet at least
twice and if we didnt have to
play a strong France team
straight after a tough game
against Spain, we could have
potentially won gold.
Dean signs
for Dodgers
DEAN KREMER has become the

first Israeli to sign a contract with
a Major League Baseball team.
The 20-year-old right-handed
pitcher was selected by The Los
Angeles Dodgers as their 14thround pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Born in California to Israeli parents, he holds Israeli citizenship
and will play this summer on the
Dodgers rookie league team.
A regular for the Israeli national side over the past three
years, he won gold when playing
for USA at the 2013 Maccabiah
Games.
He said: Im very excited and
honoured to be a part of such a
great organisation, in the
Dodgers. I felt that I was ready
this year to start my career so I
am taking advantage of the opportunity I was given.
Israel Association of Baseball
President and National Director
Peter Kurz, said: This is a major
achievement and the whole of Israel Baseball is cheering him on.

ISRAELS RHYTHMIC gymnastics team claimed a first ever

gold win at the European
Championships in Holon, Israel.
The team, comprising of
Yuval Filo, Alona Koshevatskiy,
Ekaterina Levina, Karina Lykhvar
and Ida Mayrin, won gold in the
clubs and hoops final. The win
followed silver in the ribbons

routine, and bronze in the allaround competition.
Captain Koshevatskiy said:
We are so proud. We really enjoyed performing here. Its a realistic target to win a medal in
Rio, but we arent thinking
about it.
THE SECRETARY General of

the Israel Boxing Association
(IBA) has said its a pity that
politics has once again interfered with sports after a Syrian boxer refused to enter
the ring with his Israeli opponent.
Yakov Voloch, who is also
the CEO of the IBA, was
speaking after it emerged
Alaa Ghosoun refused to
fight Artiom Masliy in a world
boxing championships, and
instead quit the tournament.
Voloch told Jewish News:
I can say only it is a pity that
politics interferes with sports.
Im sure if it was the choice of
the Syrian athlete, he would
have entered the ring. I think
these instructions came from

the government.
Masily (pictured) told Arab
media: I quit the competition because my rival was Israeli, and I cannot shake his
hand or compete against
him. If I fight against him, it
would mean that I, as a athlete, and Syria, as a state,
recognise the state of Israel.

hes hoping to go
one better with the
side next year. He said:
The goal for next season
is to go again and win the
treble. We went very
close this year and now
have a new manager on
board, together with a
lot of the same players. The group of boys
we have are very
close, both
on and off the pitch, we know what

we need to do next year, we
know what we did well last
year and where we can improve in certain areas. Everyones going to enjoy their summer
and then go again next
season.
As to whether he
believes they can
win the treble, he
added: Its always
possible, we came
very close this
year.

NORTH LONDON Raiders A striker

Jordan Marks is over the moon
after being named MGBSFL footballer of the year at the leagues
end of season awards.
The 22-year-old crowned a superb
season with the double winners by
being voted the best player in the
league by his peers, He said: Its a
perfect end to a really good season
for me personally and all the boys at
Raiders. It feels excellent, really
good. Im delighted and over the
moon, its a huge honour.
It means a lot to me now, though
I didnt really think about it during
the season, when it was more about
doing well for the team and myself,
and just get-
ting the results.

Having just completed his first
full season at the club, he said:
Every aspect of this club has
been brilliant, from pre-season
to training every Wednesday,
playing on the Sunday and the
nights out we had, its a really
good group of boys.
While not expecting the
award, he did concede it
wasnt a total surprise.
I wasnt [expecting it], but
a lot of players have been
telling me youre going to
win it for quite a while
now, he said. And then
Rob [the manager] told me
to make sure I was here this
evening, so I had a little idea
but you dont know until your
names called.

hasnt been completed yet, we may
in fact have one or two more teams
for the start of next season and I
dont think well be going backwards
in that respect.
Im concerned about the future,
but think we may be looking upwards
rather than downwards.
As far as Im concerned theres a
positive future ahead and reasons to
be hopeful.
Erlich, who reached the semifinals last year, is this year teaming up with GBs Colin Fleming.
The pair reached the semi-finals
of last weeks AEGON Championships at Queens, though suffered a first round exit at
Nottingham on Tuesday.
Amir Weintraub and Julia
Glushko were involved in the
qualifying tournament for
Wimbledon earlier in the
week, though both suffered
first round defeats.
However, Israels best
hopes of a title could lie with
Oliel. The 16-year-old who appeared at last years event
goes into it full of confidence

having recently won the
French Open doubles title.
