Preprint 12-031
EFFECTIVELY UTILIZE VOIP AND WEB COMPRESSION TECHNOLOGY WITH SATELLITE AND OTHER LOW BANDWIDTH
CONNECTIONS TO IMPROVE MINE EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY AND REDUCE COMMUNICATIONS COSTS
M. Haase, OCENS, Inc, Seattle, WA

can be assigned a standard inbound number with the area code of

your choice. Horizon service is available anywhere in the world with no
geographical limitations. Pre-paid service is also available which allows
access to a caller only after entering a prepaid calling pin.
WEBXACCELERATOR
A network device, called the WebXaccelerator, is also available
and provides metered internet access, firewall with white-lists/blacklists, log reports, web acceleration and compression, as well as
automatic failover and load balancing. It is available in a low-voltage as
well as a rack-mount version.

How important is a robust communications system for your mine

site in order to meet operationaland safety requirements? Do you
currently have VSAT in place and need a low cost, high quality multiline VoIP phone system at the site? By adding a single, compact piece
of hardware, you can utilize your existing satellite internet connection
and have as many as twenty-four separate phones lines from a single
unit. The platform is scalablefor any size of operation and can be
implemented above or below ground.
The WebXaccelerator should be placed directly down line from
the VSAT modem to control all traffic passing through the network and
provide the following functions:

HORIZON VOIP FROM OCENS

The Horizon Multi VoIP from OCENS utilizes a VSAT or other
internet connection for very efficient and low cost voice service. It
implements the unique and innovative SmartPacket technology to
highly compress data packets while maintaining voice quality, thus
preserving valuable bandwidth for multi-line availability. For example,
even at its highest call quality setting, a single line on the Horizon uses
only about 25% of the bandwidth of a typical VoIP phone. The rackmount version provides up to 24 individual phone lines, and the low
voltage unit, which provides up to eight lines, can be powered by solar
and wind energy if desired. With both units, the lines use standard
CAT3 phone cable and are compatible with any ordinary phone
handset. A PRI server version is also available to interface directly with
a PBX system.

1)

Metered internet access controlled by pre-assigned pins. A

pin can be set to have bandwidth or time restrictions. For
example, a pin with unlimited bandwidth restrictions might be
assigned for office use while more limited bandwidth pins get
distributed to personnel for personal use and thus prioritizes
network usage.

2)

Usage logs. The administrator console of the

WebXaccelerator provides detailed traffic logs to analyze
network usage.

3)

Remote support. The WebXaccelerator can be configured to

allow remote access to the network for technical support
cases.

4)

Load
balancing
and
automatic
failover.
The
WebXaccelerator can be configured to load balance with a
secondary VSAT connection and/or use the secondary
connection for automatic failover such as with a BGAN unit.

5)

Web compression. All web traffic can be compressed to

maximize performance and reduce data usage by simply
turning this option on.

6)

Black lists/white lists. Use standard or custom black lists and

white lists within the WebXaccelerators firewall.

7)

WiFi. The WebXaccelerator

SUMMARY

The final implementation of a complete network solution such as

this provides a maximized and well-protected network and a robust,
multi-line phone system; capabilities that are very comparable to
conventional land based service, but can be located atany remote
location on earth.
OCENS will customize a system specifically for the clients needs
and, as a standard, reconfigures and tests each system holistically
before deploying it to the site. With remote access and network
monitoring capabilities from the OCENS support office, off-site enduser support is offered with real-time visibility ensuring minimal
downtime in the event of a failure.
Maximize the usefulness of your VSAT connection with this
innovative technology. Improve your mine sites communications
capabilities and efficiency, reduce costs, and provide additional safety
measures by applying these concepts to your site.
