THE

GREAT 5 JULY

St Athanasios the Great

St Athanasios of Mount Athos, was Baptised Abraham and had been born
in the city of Trebizond.
Having been orphaned at an early age, he was raised by a good, loving
and Pious Nun, whom he imitated in the habits of Monastic Life, in
Fasting and in Prayer. His education was easily acquired and he
quickly outshone his peers.
After the Repose of his adoptive mother, young Abraham was sent to
Constantinople - to the court of the Byzantine Emperor, Romanos the
Elder, where he was enrolled as a student under the renowned
Rhetorician, Athanasios.
In a short while St Athanasios had mastered all the skills of his Tutor and he
himself became an instructor to others.
His Life in Christ was strict and self-disciplined. He Fasted, he prayed, he
kept Vigil, he slept very little - and then only while sitting upon a stool and his only physical nourishment consisted of small amounts of barley
bread and water.
Through human weakness, his Teacher became jealous of him, so the Wise
and Blessed Abraham resigned from his teaching position and went
away.
St Michael Maleinos, the Igumen (Abbot) of the Kyminas Monastery was
visiting Constantinople, so when they met each other, the future St
Athanasios told St Michael the Igumen all about his Life, and revealed
to him his secret desire of being a Monk.
The Holy Elder immediately discerned him as being a Chosen Vessel of the
Holy Spirit, and as he got to know St Athanasios better, he became very
fond of him and taught him many aspects of our Eternal Salvation.
During one of their Spiritual Discussions, St Michael was visited by his
nephew, Nicephoros Phokas, who was a military officer at the time, and
a future Emperor of the Roman Empire.
The lofty spirit and profound mind of the young St Athanasios made such
an intense impression on Nicephoros, that for the rest of his life he
always regarded him with the utmost reverent respect and Love.
St Athanasios was consumed by his zeal for the Monastic Life, so, having
forsaken everything, he went to Kyminas Monastery and, falling down at
the feet of the Holy Igumen, he begged to receive his Blessings,
whereupon with Great Joy, he tonsured him and gave him the name
Athanasios.
With long Fasts, Vigils, Prostrations, and ceaseless Labours night and day, St
Athanasios soon attained such Perfection, that the Holy Igumen gave
him his Blessings to live as an Ascetic Hermit in Silence at a solitary site
not too distant from the Monastery.
St Athanasios then found and rejected many isolated sites, until - Guided by
God - he arrived at a place called Melanos, which was at the very
extremity of the peninsula of Mount Athos, far away from the other
Monastic Dwellings. He made himself a very small cell and began his
Ascetical Life in Spiritual Labours and Prayer, progressing from one
Spiritual Feat to the next.
As can always be expected, the enemy of mankind tried to arouse in the
Holy Ascetic a hatred for the place, and when this failed, he incessantly
assaulted him with negative and wicked thoughts, which St Athanasios
managed to reject and defeat, although with great difficulty at times.

THE

St Isaac of Nineveh (the Syrian)

When we know that we need Divine Help, we will frequently pray.
And by much beseeching, our heart becomes humbled, for there is no one
who is needy and asking, without being humble.
And God will not despise ... a broken and contrite heart...
Until our heart has become humble, we will not rest from distractions, for
Humility restrains our heart, and as soon as we have become humble,
Divine Mercy will surround and envelop us.
And when Mercy draws near, our heart will perceive Divine Help at once,
because some Confidence and Force will also move within us.
And when our heart perceives that Divine Help is approaching, and that
God is our Support and our Helper, then we are filled with Faith.
Consequently, we will behold and understand that Prayer is the Port of our
Help, the Fountain of our Salvation, the Treasure of our Confidence, the
Sheet-Anchor amidst the storms of our life, the Light in the Darkness, the
Walking Stick of the weak, the Shelter in times of temptation, the Holy
Medicine in times of illness, the Shield of Protection in our Battles, and
the Sharpest of Arrows against our enemies. (Mystic Treatises)

Evagrios the Solitary - On Prayer

Stand on guard and protect your intellect from thoughts while you pray.
Then your intellect will complete its Prayer and continue in the Tranquillity
that is natural to it.
In this way He Who has Compassion on the ignorant will come to you, and
you will receive the Blessed Gift of Prayer.
You cannot attain Pure Prayer while entangled in material things and
agitated by constant cares.
For prayer means the shedding of our (worldly) thoughts. (ONE HUNDRED AND
FIFTY-THREE TEXTS THE PHILOKALIA)

THE

GREAT 5 JULY

However, St Athanasios refused to be defeated and resolved to endure his

Spiritual Warfare for at least one year, and then wherever or whatever
our Lord should direct him to go or to do, he would humbly obey Him.
On the last day of that year, as St Athanasios began his Prayers, a Heavenly
Light suddenly shone upon him, filling him with an Indescribable Joy,
Peace and Love that instantly dissipated all negative and Spiritually
Unprofitable thoughts - and - filled with Divine Grace - he wept.
From that moment, St Athanasios received the Gift of Tenderness , and as
much as he had begun to loathe the remoteness and isolation of the
area, he now appreciated it and valued it beyond measure.
Meanwhile, having had enough of his military exploits, Nicephoros Phokas
remembered how St Athanasios had vowed to become a Monk, and,
having eventually located him, he besought St Athanasios to build a
Monastery on that secluded site.
He offered to finance and organise the construction of cells for St Athanasios
and the other Holy Brethren, as well as a church so that they could
partake of the Divine Mysteries of Christ.
At first St Athanasios refused to accept his generous offer naturally tending
to shun worldly cares and concerns, but perceiving the sincere, fervent
and good intentions of Nicephoros Phokas, and Discerning thereby the
Will of God, he finally agreed.
St Athanasios and his fellow Monks began the construction by first erecting t
a large church in honour of St John the Baptist - the Holy Prophet and
Forerunner of Christ, as well as another church at the foot of a hill, in
honour of our Ever Blessed, All Holy Lady, Theotokos.
Surroundng the church were the cells, and, by the Grace of God, a
wondrous Monastery arose on Mount Athos, consisting of a Trapeza
(Refectory), a Hospice for the sick and dying, and various other
structures to accommodate Pilgrims and other necessities.
Brethren flocked to the Monastery from everywhere -not only from Greece,
but also from other lands from the most simple, humble of people to
illustrious dignitaries, Desert-Dwellers who Laboured in Asceticism for
many long years in the wilderness, Holy Igumens from many
Monasteries, and a great variety of Hierarchs who wanted to become
simple Monks of the Holy Lavra of St Athanasios, on Mount Athos.
St Athanasios established a Cenobitic Monastic Rule on the model of the old
Palestinian Monasteries. Divine Services were served with all strictness,
and no one was so bold as to talk during the Holy Services - nor to arrive
late or depart before the Dismissal, without urgent necessity!
The Heavenly Patroness of Mount Athos, the All-Pure Mother of God Herself,
was Graciously disposed towards St Athanasios, and he was often
extremely Blessed to behold Her with his own eyes.
By Gods Dispensation, there once occurred such a devastating drought
and famine that the Monks one after the other quit the Lavra, until St
Athanasios was left alone.
In a very brief moment of weakness, he also considered leaving, when
suddenly he beheld a Woman adorned with an ethereal veil, coming to
meet him. Who are you and where are you going? She asked him
quietly. St Athanasios from an innate deference halted, and spoke to
her: I am a Monk from here... he explained, and then experienced a
deep compulsion to speak to Her about himself and his worries.
When he stopped speaking, She responded: Would you forsake the
Monastery that was intended for Glory from generation unto
generation, just for a morsel of dry bread? Where is your Faith? Turn
around, and I shall help you.

3.

Who are you? asked the astonished St Athanasios. I am the Mother of the
Lord, She answered, and asked St Athanasios to strike his staff upon a
stone. He immediately did so, and from the fissure there gushed forth a
spring of water, which exists even now, in remembrance of this
Miraculous Visitation.
The Brethren returned and grew in number, and the construction work at
the Lavra continued.
St Athanasios, foreseeing the time of his departure to the Lord, prophesied
about his impending end, yet besought the Brethren not to be troubled
over what he had foreseen: ...For Wisdom disposes otherwise than as
people judge.
The Brethren were perplexed and pondered his words.
After giving the Brethren his final Spiritual Guidance and having comforted
them, St Athanasios entered his cell, put on his Mantiya and Holy
Kukolion (head covering), which he wore only on Great Feasts, and then
emerged after prolonged Prayer.
Alert and joyful, St Athanasios the Holy Igumen, with six of his Brethren
Disciples, ascended to the top of the church to inspect the construction.
Without any warning, the roof of the church collapsed and fell down.
Five of the Brethren immediately surrendered their souls to God, while St
Athanasios and the Architect, Daniel, were thrown upon the stones but
still remained alive.
Everyone heard St Athanasios call out to our Lord: Glory to Thee, O God!
Lord, Jesus Christ, help me!
The Brethren with intense sorrow and great weeping began to frantically
extricate their Beloved Holy Father from the rubble, but when they
eventually reached him, he had already Reposed in Christ.
May his memory be Eternal, and may he ceaselessly Intercede with our
Saviour for the sake of our immortal soul and Eternal Salvation.
