byfreshengineeringgraduatesfromIndia.

freshengineeringgraduatesfromIndia.Mostofthemwerefrom
Bangaloreandalmostallofthemhadnoclearwayforward.
Neitherwasthereanypolicyframeworkinplace.Itwasanascent
eventheraldingtheevenmorenascentnanotechmovementthat
couldbethenextbigthingtocome.Sure,theIndiangovernment
hadannounced$250millioninvestmentbutconcreteideasand
businessplanswerenotforthcoming.
Today,atthefourtheditionofBangaloreNano2011,notonlywas
thestagesetforaR&Dcentre(theIndianInstituteof
NanoscienceandTechnology)whichisbeingsetupherein
BangalorewithfundingsupportfromtheCentralGovernment,but
theKarnatakagovernmenthasgoneonestepaheadand
announcedthesettingupofaNanoParkinBangalore.According
totheKarnatakaChiefMinister,astateoftheartNanoPark
wouldbesetupneartheBangaloreInternationalAirportwhichwill
houseaNanoIncubationCenterwithworldclassfacilitiesto
developthissectoronsimilarlinesasITservices/productsand
biotechnology.
WhenIspokewithM.N.Vidyashankar,PrincipalSecretary,IT,
whoisspearheadingthewholeshow,hesaidthattheentire
frameworkfortheNanoParkhasbeenputinplaceandtheglobal
tenderforthesettingupoftheNanoParkthefirstofitskindin
Indiawouldbeannouncedonthe16thofJanuary2012.

Wehavefinalizedthelocationwhere25acreshasbeenallocated
forthisventure.Sincewehadnoideaabouttherequirementsby
nanotechstartups,wehadindepthdiscussionsnotonlywiththe
IndianInstitutesofTechnology(IITs)andIndianInstituteof
Science,BangalorebutalsofromtheUSandEUwhichhavea
hostofnanotechparks,Vidyashankarsaid.
Thereareabout55nanotechcompaniesIndia,spreadacrossa
hugespectrum,rightfromtextilestoelectronicstowaste
managementandevennanotubesmanufacturing.Amajorityof
themarebasedinBangalorewhileafewareinMumbai.And,
almosteveryCEO(ofnanotechcompanies)Imettoday,was
eagertogetmoredetailsabouttheNanoParkwhichwas
announcedtodaybytheChiefMinister.Yousee,merelysetting
upanR&Dcenterisnotreallygoingtohelpthisindustrygo
forward.Weneededtohaveasetupwhichwouldhelpthese
companiestocommercialisetheirproductsandtechnologiesand
theNanoParkisthefirstbabystepinthisdirection,Vidyashankar
explained.

wastemanagement,andacoupleofthemwereinmanufacturing
ofcarbonnanotubes.
NoPo,aBangalorebasedstartupwasworkingonscalingupthe
HipCOProcessforproductionofSingleWalledCarbon
Nanotubes.(HipCOstandsforhighpressurecarbonmonoxide
andisoneoftheonlygasphaseprocessesthatcanproduce
SingleWalledNanotubesofover98%purity).Itwasinventedby
RobertKelleyBradleyundertheguidanceofNobellaureate
RichardSmalleyaspartofhisPhDthesis.Kelleynowworksfor
NoPoNanotechnologiesIndia,asadirectoroftechnologyand
research.SaysGadhadarReddy,CEO,NoPo,Thisisagame
changerandisboundtochangealotofthingsinthenanotech
space.AccordingtoReddy,theHipCOprocessmakesuseof
carbonmonoxideatahighpressureandtemperatureanduses
NickelandIronCarbonylascatalysts.TheoriginalHipCOat
RICEUniversitycouldonlyproduceafewgramsofSingleWalled
CarbonNanotubeswhereasweareplanningproductionin
kilograms,headded.
Similarly,therewasanotherstartup,GlobalNanotechwhichalso
suppliescarbonbasednanomaterialstoChinaandtheUS.
Foundedby25yearoldJineshShah,whograduatedfrom
LouisianaUniversityhiscompanyhascollaborationswith,leading
organizationstoproducethehighestqualityoffunctionaland
structuralnanomaterials.
Anotherstartupi2nTechnologiesprovidesscanningprobe
microscopysolutionswhichfeatureseveraltechnological
innovationsataffordableprices.
AresearchteamunderV.RamgopalRao,professorfrom
DepartmentofMicroelectronicsattheIndianInstituteof
Technology,Mumbai,hasdevelopedanexplosivedetection
devicecalledENoseoutofitsstartup,NanosniffTechnologies.
TheENoseiscosteffective,reliable,small,light,quick,and
portablejustabouteverythingthatalargeanddensely
populatedcountryneedsintodaysterrorismriddenenvironment
materialsandrelatedanalyticalserviceswithrequiredtechnical
support.Weareplanningtosetupamanufacturingunit,eitherin
BangaloreorHimachalPradeshtodevelopthesehandheld
explosivedetectors,saidKapilBardeja,cofounderandCEO,
NanosniffTechnologies.
NanotechstartupsinIndiahaveindeedcomealongwayfromthe
smallsteptakenaboutfouryearsagowherejustabout78
startupshadshowcasedprematureideasandtechnologiesand
nonehadtakenoff,
Buttoday,about27startupshadshowcasedtheirproducts,
technologiesandservicesattheBangaloreNano2011andeach
seemedtohaveauniquesolutioninareassuchasenergy,
chemicalsandtextilesaswellashighendstructural
nanomaterialsandseveralseemedtohavecommercializedtheir
productsandareinexpansionmode.ThesettingupoftheNano
ParkwillsurelyhelpuspropelourexpansionplansandBangalore
isagreatplacetoexpandsincetheskillsetsavailablehereare
unparalleledcomparedtoothercities,addedNanosniffsBardeja.
