ANDREW GILLESPIE

INTRODUCTION
Introduction to me
Hello, I am Andrew Gillespie and I am going to pitch the idea of a documentary about the pros
and cons of video games.
Introduction to my programme
I Intend to produce a programme outlying the pros and cons of video gaming this is because
they are not covered that much on the news, but when they are they are always slated for being
bad; maybe they arent as bad as you think.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN PROS AND CONS?

Channel 4 takes on average 11% of the TV viewership for the UK and its average viewing age is young adults
aged 18-30 which is perfect for the target audience I want to reach.

Channel 4 states that they ideally will foster the new and experimental in television. It will encourage
pluralism, provide a favoured place for the untried and encourage innovation in style content perspective and
talent on and off screen.

THE PROGRAMME

The title will be The hidden truths about video games

The target audience will be the same as channel 4s: 18-30 year olds.

It will be on, on a Thursday night

9PM after big bang theory

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Electro music is good for the introduction; as gaming is done on electronic

equipment it fits well

The introduction will outline what the documentary will be looking at and will last
roughly 2 mins.

The advert breaks will be every 15 mins and they will be 3 mins long

The closing credits will use the same song as the intro and will last roughly 1 minute
to name everyone who was involved with the making of the documentary.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
I will have the intro titles
Next I will have an introductory speech about the programme

I will now outline all of the pros and cons of gaming

The ending will start with an in depth conclusion if the topic

and it will state weather it is better to game or not to game.
Finally the end credits will roll

TALENT TOM CASSELL (SYNDICATEPROJECT)

Who is?
Tom Cassell most known as SyndicateProject, is a
youtuber who produces gaming videos and vlogs,
he is very generous when it coms to charities and
he would be perfect for the documentary.
How much do they charge?
Based on how much Tom makes per video, roughly
$600-$1800 (400-1000) I feel that paying him
$4311 (3000) is fair as that would be the
equivalent of about 5 YouTube videos.

PROPOSED PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE

Planning

The planning should take 1 day MAXIMUM, I will create strict Gantt charts that
everyone will have to comply with.

Interviews

I will interview parents of child gamers and also adult gamers. This should take
2 days

Studio Filming

I will film the commentary in the channel 4 HQ but most of it will take place in
and around London and Google UKHQ this should take 5 days

Editing and Publishing

this will be done quickly using adobe pramiere and it will be completed within 3
days

SECONDARY RESEARCH QUANTITATIVE

I have decided to air my programme on a Thursday night after big
bang theory as most of its viewers are aged 18-30, the age I am
targeting. The idea behind this is that it is a topic that most 18-30
year-olds will be interested in therefore they will stay on channel 4 and
they will watch the documentary.

SECONDARY RESEARCH QUALITATIVE

Game reviews
When doing research into the pros and cons of video games a big decision can be
made by looking mostly at the game its self and the message it conveys .
There are many sites that specialise on looking at video games and they determine
whether the game is good bad or ugly. These are called game review sites.
The best site for game reviews at the moment is IGN as they specialise in bringing
reviews on every game that is released as fast as they can.
So much information and many different opinions can be gathered from game
review sites as there is usually a comments section about the review in hand.
Internet forums
Internet forums are the holy grail of research as you can collect opinions of likeminded or different-minded people to build arguments against or for a topic based on
peoples opinions. This is also good to collect peoples opinions on controversial matters
such as the one I am researching.

PRIMARY RESEARCH QUANTITATIVE

When conducting research I made a questionnaire that investigated
what people actually knew about the pros and cons of gaming and
how much they gamed using which platforms. the questions will be
shown on the next few slides

AUDIENCE RESEARCH
Age
the audience that I am targeting is age 18-30 and they either play
video games or are the parents of children who play video games.
Gender
There is about a 50-50 mix of male and female gamers.
Education
People of all education levels play video games.

MARKET RESEARCH
Product market

The product market for gaming seems to attract younger people rather than older, the average
age for gaming is about 39 and this shows that there is a fair amount of young-middle aged
people playing video games, this is because it was their generation that gaming truly kicked off
in, With games like Mario.

Competitor analysis.

In gaming, the market is very competitive so there is a fight to raise HYPE about your game
and to lower HYPE about other games. This is because in the ever growing market it is hard
to compete with other games, as they have features that you might necessarily not have in
your game that attract more people. Usually the hype is generated through teaser trailers.

EVALUATION

What is important to think about

The main pros and cons about gaming when taking part in the activity
How easy it is to become addicted
What research will be useful for the documentary
All of it

FINAL PITCH
Why choose my documentary?
It is a topic that is rarely covered in the world today even though
the gaming industry is one of the biggest entertainment industry
in the world, overtaking Music about 2 years ago.
How will it benefit the public?
It will make the public aware of the benefits more than the
disadvantages of gaming, this is because when ever gaming is
covered in the news it only gets bad publicity.
Is it a worth-while topic?
Yes as it effects so many lives today.
