retractableroofbaseballstadiumlocatedinSeattle,Washington.
OwnedandoperatedbytheWashingtonStateMajorLeague
BaseballStadiumPublicFacilitiesDistrict,itisthehome
stadiumoftheSeattleMarinersofMajorLeagueBaseball
(MLB)andhasaseatingcapacityof47,943forbaseball.[6]Itis
locatedinSeattle'sSoDoneighborhood,nearthewestern
terminusofInterstate90.ThefirstgamewasplayedonJuly15,
1999.
Duringthe1990s,thesuitabilityoftheMariners'original
stadiumtheKingdomeasanMLBfacilitycameunder
doubt,andtheteam'sownershipgroupthreatenedtorelocatethe
team.InSeptember1995,KingCountyvotersdefeatedaballot
measuretosecurepublicfundingforanewbaseballstadium.
Shortlythereafter,theMariners'firstappearanceintheMLB
postseasonandtheirvictoryinthe1995AmericanLeague
DivisionSeries(ALDS)renewedapublicdesiretokeepthe
teamintown.Asaresult,theWashingtonStateLegislature
approvedanalternatemeansoffundingforthestadiumwith
publicmoney.Thesiteforthestadium,justsouthofthe
Kingdome,wasselectedinSeptember1996andconstruction
beganinMarch1997.

History
OnMarch30,1994,KingCountyexecutiveGaryLockeappointedataskforcetoassesstheneedforanew
baseballstadiumtoreplacetherapidlydeterioratingKingdome.ManyfearedthattheMarinerswouldleaveSeattle
ifanewstadiumwasnotbuilt.InJanuary1995,the28membertaskforcerecommendedtotheKingCounty
Councilthatthepublicshouldbeinvolvedinthefinancingofthestadium.Thetaskforceconcludedthatasalestax
increaseof.01%wouldbesufficienttofundthestadium.KingCountyheldaspecialelectioninSeptember1995,
askingthepublicforthissalestaxincrease.Themeasurewasnarrowlydefeated.
OnOctober14,1995,aspecialsessionofthestatelegislatureauthorizedadifferentfundingpackageforanew
stadiumthatincludedafoodandbeveragetaxinKingCountyrestaurantsandbars,carrentalsurchargeinKing
County,aballparkadmissionstax,acreditagainstthestatesalestax,andsaleofaspecialstadiumlicenseplate.
Ninedayslater,theKingCountyCouncilapprovedthefundingpackageandestablishedtheWashingtonState
MajorLeagueBaseballStadiumPublicFacilitiesDistricttoowntheballparkandoverseedesignand
construction.[11]Taxpayersuitsopposingthelegislativeactionsandthetaxesfailedinthecourts.[12]

OnSeptember9,1996,thesitewasselectedforthenewstadium,justsouthoftheKingdome.Inlatefall,several
membersoftheKingCountyCouncilwrotealettertotheSeattleMariners,statingthatofficialsconsider
postponingconstructionandtheopeningofthe(thenprojected)$384.5millionstadiumproject.[13]Inresponse,
Marinersownershipheldanewsconferencestatingthattheywouldeitherselltheteam,ormovetheteamfrom
Seattle.Afterapublicoutcry,theKingCountyCouncilvotedtoreaffirmtheircooperationwiththeMarinersin
buildinganewstadium.Marinersownershipcontributed$145milliontocovercostoverruns.
ConstructionofficiallybeganonMarch8,1997witha
groundbreakingceremonyfeaturingMarinersstarKenGriffey,Jr.
Theconstruction,overseenbyChiefFinancialOfficerKevin
Mather,[14]continueduntilJuly1999.Thefirstgameinthenew
stadiumwasplayedonJuly15,1999againsttheSanDiegoPadres.

Beforethestadiumwasinitiallychristened,thenamingrightstothe
stadiumweresoldforadvertising.SeattlebasedSafecoinsurance
companypaid$40millionforthenamingrightsfortheballpark's
first20years.However,theacquisitionoftheSafecocompanyby
BostonbasedLibertyMutualGrouphasopenedthedistant
possibilitythatthenamecouldbechangedbeforethecontract
expiresin2019.However,expertsspeculatethiswillonlyhappenif
LibertyMutualretirestheSafeconameduringthattime.[15]

SafecoFieldunderconstructionin1998.
TheKingdomeisvisibleinthebackground.

WhenKenGriffey,Jr.,returnedtoSafecoin2007withtheCincinnatiReds,hecametoahero'swelcome,
receivinggiftsfromtheMarinersorganization,andfellowformerplayersJayBuhnerandEdgarMartnez.They
unveiledanewposterthatdeclaredSafecoField"TheHouseThatGriffeyBuilt."
TheMarinersmovedthefencesatSafecoFieldclosertohomeplateasofthe2013season"tocreatean
environmentthatisfairforbothhittersandpitchers,"accordingtoGeneralManagerJackZduriencik.[16]The
centerfieldscoreboardandadpanelswerereplacedwithan11,435squarefootboardinthesamerenovation,
becomingthelargestamongallstadiumscoreboardsinthemajorleagues.[17]Theremodeledfielddebutedon
April8,2013betweentheMarinersandHoustonAstros.[18]Safecohadbeenconsideredoneofthemostpitcher
friendlyballparksinthemajorssinceitopened,[19][20]thoughthe2013remodellinginvolvedshrinkingthe

manyofthefeaturesofballparksbuiltinthe1950sandearlierwithmodernamenities.Incontrastwiththe
Kingdomeandtheothermultipurposestadiumsbuiltprimarilyduringthe1960sand1970s,SafecoFieldfeatures
abrickfaade,anasymmetricalfielddimension,anaturalgrassfield,spectatorsightlinesmoresuitedforbaseball,
andissurroundedbycitystreets,arailroadline,andbuildings.Onamodernnote,theballparkfeaturesa
retractableroof,luxurysuites,extensivefoodandbeverageselectionbeyondtraditionalballparkfare,andmodern
clubhouseamenitiesforplayers,aswellastechnologythatallowsspectatorstomonitorspecialgametimefeatures
withNintendoDSreceivers,andisfullyADAaccessible.

southeastcorners.TheseareidentifiedasHomePlate,LeftField,
CenterField,andRightField,respectively.Entrytoallticketholders

at"The'Pen"entrybehindthebullpensinleftfield..Specialentrances
formediaandholdersofcertainticketlevelsarelocatedonthe
southwestandsouthsidesofthestadium.

TheBroadcastCenter(pressbox)islocatedontheClubLevelandsublevelbetweenitandtheMainLevel.Asthe
fieldisapproximatelyatstreetlevel,entryintoanyofthemaingatesrequiresvisitorstoascendaflightofstairs,
escalator,orelevatortoaccessthemainconcourse,withtheexceptionoftheRightFieldEntry,whichopensonto
themainconcourse.Stairs,escalators,elevators,andrampslocatedaroundtheballparkprovideaccesstoall

Retractableroof
SafecoFieldhasauniqueretractableroofthatonlyactsasan
"umbrella"forthestandsandfieldratherthanformingacomplete
climatecontrolledenclosure,asisthecasewithallotherretractable
roofsinMajorLeagueBaseball.Seattle'srelativelymildclimate
meanstheparkrarelyneedstobeheatedorcooled,butfrequent
precipitationnecessitatedaroof.Theroofissometimesclosed,
however,indryweatherwhenthetemperatureisparticularlylow.On
coldnights,closingtheroofhelpspreventradiationheatloss.Theonly
othercoveredbaseballstadiumintheworldwithpermanentopenings
isthefixedroofSeibuDomeinTokorozawa,Saitama,Japan,homeof
theSaitamaSeibuLions.

Intheopenposition,theroofrestsovertheBNSFRailwaytracksthat
boundthestadiumtotheeast,withpartofithangingoverthestandsinrightfield.Thishastheeffectofechoing
thewhistlesfrompassingtrainsintothestadium.TrainwhistleswereafrequentfixtureoftheSafecoField
experienceinitially,butabatedsignificantlywhenanoverpasswasbuiltforRoyalBroughamWay,thestreetthat
boundsthestadiumtothenorthwhichpreviouslycrossedthetracks.
Theroofconsistsofthreemajorsectionsthatextendintotheclosedpositioninatelescopingmanner,withthetwo
outersectionsrestingunderthelargercentersection.Eachsectionrestsonasetofparalleltrackslocatedonthe
northandsouthsidesofthestadium,withtheoutersectionsmovingalongtheinnersetoftracks,andthecenter
sectionmovingalongtheouterset.Eachsectionisstructurallyindependenti.e.,nosectiondependsonanotherfor
structuralstability."WelcometoSafecoField,Seattle"ispaintedontopofthecentersection,visiblefromaircraft
whethertheroofisopenorclosed.Alighted"SafecoField"signwasaddedtotheeastsideoftheroofin2007,
whichaidsinidentificationofthestadiumfromthefreewaystotheeast.
Eachsectionisindependentlypoweredbyelectricmotorsthatmovetherespectivesectionsalongthetracks.Itis
controlledfromacentralcontrolroomlocatedunderthecenterfieldscoreboard.Dependingonwindandweather
conditions,therooftakesapproximately10minutestomovefromthefullyopentothefullyclosedposition,and
viceversa.Theroofmovementisnearlysilent,blendinginwiththeambientnoisetypicallypresentduringagame.
Duringnormaloperation,themovementofeachsectionisgovernedbycomputers,withallthreesectionsmoving
atthesametime.Duringanemergencyormaintenanceoperation,eachsectioncanbeindependentlymoved.A
workingsparemotorandwheelassemblyfortheroofcanbefoundinsidethecenterfieldgate.Initspresentstate,
itservestoeducatevisitorsonhowtheroofoperates,butifneeded,itcanbeusedtoreplaceasimilarpartonthe
roofshouldonebecomedamagedordefective.
OnApril7,2013,TotalProSportsvotedSafecoFieldthe8thBestPlacetoCatchaGamein2013,mainlyowing
theawardtothedesignofSafeco'sretractableroof.[28]

Aballstrikingtherooforrooftrussisstillconsideredinflight,andthebatterisoutiflegallycaughtbya
fielder,regardlessofwhereitstruck.
Movementoftheroof:
Ifthegamestartswiththeroofopen,itmaybeclosedduringthegameifweatherconditionswarrant,andat
thediscretionofthehometeam.Playmaycontinueduringclosure,unlesstheumpiresdetermineitis
necessarytostopplay.
Ifthegamestartswiththeroofclosed,itmaybeopenedduringthegameifweatherconditionswarrant.
Openingtheroofcanonlystartbetweeninnings,afternotificationoftheumpirecrewchief.Thevisiting
teammaychallengethedecisiontoopentheroof,butfinaldecisionoverwhethertoopentherooflieswith

whenEdgarMartinezhit"TheDouble".Thereisanemptyseatnexttothestatue,sofanscansitnexttoDaveand
poseforphotos.Dave'slongtimebroadcastpartnerRickRizzspresidedoveraprivateceremonytounveilthe

TheDaveNiehausBroadcastCenterislocatedontheClubLevelbehindhomeplate.WhenNiehausdied,his
