a) from the period of the Old Kingdom onwards, feast-days dedicated to the
commemoration of the dead were well known. One of the most common
inscription that we can read in OK private Tombs, clearly refers One of the oldest,
the Wag feast, is well documented from the Old Kingdom to the Roman
domination. During this celebration, a pilgrimage to Abido was held (a recurring
element in many similar festivals) and offering were to be made - perhaps
including wine - to the dead.
H. Vymazalov (pp.138 -143) says: previously studied papyrus archive from
Neferikares funerary temple showed that different festivals were celebrated in
connection with the kings funerary temple in Abusir. These festivals naturally

occurred in the administrative records of the funerary temple attendants, above


all in the record of the priestly duties of the temple attendants specifying the
different activities of the individuals relating to the festival ceremonies. In the
archive of Raneferef, on the other hand we have wag and dhehuty festival. P.
140. In the OK there existed two wag festivals one in the civil calendar and the
second in the lunar calendar. Cf. Lahun papiry .
P. Posener-Kriger suggested during her work on Raneferefs papyrus archive,
that it is likely that the festival dhehuty and wag were in some documents joinrd
because in this way, dheuty could also be celebrated in the years in which the
intercalary lunar month was not added to the regular lunar months. In her
suggestion, she followed the idea that every three (or sometimes less) years, an
extra lunar month must have been added to the lunar calendar in order to keep a
certain harmony between the lunar and civil calendars. In this extra lunar month
which was connected to the moon good festival dheutyt should have been
celebrated. Maybe the celebration took place in a specific on a specific place at
the necropolis.
