Absorption Chiller Sizing Information

Plug in the following three inputs into the calculator in the next sheet to get the
estimated chiller size you need for your application.
1. Incoming water temperature
2. The chill water temperature you require
3. The flow rate
NB:-add 20% to tons of cooling capacity to compensate for extra heat being added
by the pumps, heat loss and inefficiencies of their systems.
Chiller capacities are based upon many factors including fluid temperatures, ambient
air conditions, fluid being cooled and compressor performance data. (Important
conversion tools; downward here) Many chillers are rated for air-conditioning
standards, which are 44F leaving fluid temp., 54F entering temp. and 9.08 litres per
minute per ton.
Conversion Tools
12,000 BTU = 3.516 kW
1 Refrigerant Ton = 12,000 BTU/hr
EER (BTU/hr) = 3.412 x EER (W/W)

Calculate Temperature Differential, T. (and convert to Farenhei

[T = Incoming Water Temperature (F) - Required Chill Water

Calculate BTU/hr.
BTU/hr. = Litres per hr x 2.20 x T

Calculate tons of cooling capacity

Tons = BTU/hr. 12,000

Oversize the chiller by 20%

Ideal Size in Tons = Tons x 1.2
