ABSTRACT
The Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) is a procedure for the evaluation of the structural integrity of cracked
components. The failure conditions (load and crack size) of the component are based on the material fracture properties
(Kmat) taking into account its plastic behaviour. In the present work a new methodology combining the diagram FAD
and the load-displacement curve obtained from the pre-cracked Small Punch Test (SPT) has been developed, in order to
estimate the fracture toughness of a stainless steel. The present research is based on the numerical simulation of a precracked specimen to determine the plastic collapse load and the stress intensity factor during the loading process. A set
of interrupted Small Punch Tests have been also made to identify the starting point of the crack propagation. Ones the
plastic collapse load and the stress intensity factor have been already determined, the parameters Kr and Lr are
estimated in the very moment of the cracked specimen failure, having just as unknown variable the value Kmat.
Subsequently the mentioned values are combined with the diagram FAD of the material obtained from a level 3 B
according to ASME-API 579, estimating this way the value Kmat. To evaluate the accuracy grade of this methodology
the estimated toughness obtained has been compared with that from normalized tests of the considered material.

1. INTRODUCCIN
