But, by a twist of fate, their disability played for them. It was rare that one person from an
entire family survived the camp, let alone two, but all 12 members of the Ovitz family. On

The Ovitz family, from the village of Rozavlea in Transylvania, was the largest recorded
family of dwarves. A dwarf father who sired 10 children, seven of them dwarves.Their
mother, anxious for her children's future, guided them towards a common skill, a profession
in which they could together make a living and would be neither isolated nor ostracized.
Many perpetrators confessed to what they had done during the war, after it was over. For
example, Otto Ohlendorf, commander of one of the Einsatzgruppen units, testified quite
openly that between June 1941 and 1942 his Einsatzgruppe murdered 90,000 people. Some
deniers explain away the confessions by positing that after the war these Germans were
subjected to a barrage of propaganda, and themselves became victims. Throughout history,
dwarves had been entertainers, often part of a circus or vaudeville show.
