Mindmap of ideas for your installation

Create a mindmap showing ideas of how you might install your video.
Define what type(s) of visuals you will use.
(Eg. video cameras, still cameras, hand crafted artwork, film, animation, digital technologies)

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Past and current video installation practice

From your research into video installation, give two examples that you think influence your work / ideas
in some way.
One should be a past practitioner, the other should be contemporary.
Contemporary Practitioner
Name:

Jessica De Muro Unspeakable

Biography

"Unspeakable" two installations by Jessica De Muro, an artist

based in Los Angeles whose work focuses on both
installation and photography. Born in Ann Arbor, MI, before
pursuing photography, she received BA in Journalism from
Michigan State University. Later, she earned an Associate
Degree in photography from Harrington College of Design in
Chicago and a Master of Fine Arts in photography from
Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. Her
current work addresses issues dealing with trauma,
dissociation, and sexual violence. In her installations De
Muro expresses a fragmented state of mind - which often
results from sexual trauma - and generates in a physical form
the compartmentalized alienation of the viewer's own body
and mind. In her installations a kinetic movement and energy
is achieved by suspended prints which brings a sense of life
to the work, giving breath not only to the pieces themselves
but also to what they represent. Addressing the emotional
consequences of rape, as opposed to the act itself, gives
viewers a unique and genuine insight commonly overlooked
when examining sexual violence.

Notes on their installation

Personally I feel like her work has a message behind it and it
there to make you feel something. I think its supposed to
confuse you and make you want to understand the people in
the photos.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

How is it similar to your ideas?

The photographs themselves have nothing in common with

our installation. But in the sense of how it is being displayed it
is quite similar in the fact that it makes an image. Ours is built
up to make a iPhone for Instagram.

How is it
similar to
your
ideas?

similar to the other installation although the images don't really relate to ours the way they
are being displayed will be similar. the sense it will be creating an image.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Installation / set sketches

Draw a series of thumbnail sketches showing ideas for your installation. Add labels to your diagrams to
identify equipment, where the image will be seen,
where the audience will stand etc.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Sound design
What sound will your FMP / Productions have?
Sound effects to represent each concept behind the images e.g. a river flowing for Ollies photos of the
riverside, camera clicks and perfume sprays for Tazs fashion/perfume shoot.

Will you use headphones or speakers for this sound?

Headphones

Why?
To block out the surrounding sound of peoples chatter and other exhibitions and make it all about our
exhibition grasping the viewers full attention

Lighting design
What lighting will you have in your installation? Consider health and safety.
L.E.D strips across the back of the display instagram page to shine through the gaps between the
photos giving a phone effect. It wont however be too close to the display to avoid hazards

Sketch out your lighting plans for the installation.

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Projection vs screen
Will you project your video or play it on a screen?
Project one video on the wall aswell as the photo display and have all videos and stills on iPad screen.

Why?

If you are projecting what will

you project ONTO? (ie fabric,

If you are using a screen, will you

use a single screen, or multiple

Singlescreen.

How will that change how your

Unit 35 Installation Production Booklet

Technological convergence
What is technological convergence?
This is how technology has evolved and advanced over time

Will you be using this in your installation?

We will be using an iPad and projector which wasnt available in some installations a while ago as
technology had not advanced to that. We are incorporating social media which again is a somewhat
new advancement to technology.

How have the following influenced your ideas?

work of the artists you have researched

venue and facilites

lighting

sound

screens / projectors

speakers / headphones

Both artists hung up the photos to

create one big story through
images. We have slightly taken
from this as we are putting
together a social media account.
Which is like a modern
interpretation of their work.

They were both displayed in a gallery

which is also what we are doing for our
installation. Photography works better
in a gallery as its where all photograpy
is shown. It gives the essence of a
high standard.

Quite dim lighting, we are doing this to

create a phone effect which although
isnt necessarily similar to the artists
idea but we are using dim lighting to
create a certain effect. Which is what
the artists we have researched have
also done.

Sound wasnt used in the

instalations we researched

Abbette Messager instead of

projecting her photos she hung them
up. We are using this in our installation
as we felt seeing the photos rather
than a projected image of the photos
worked better with photography.

This wasnt used in the installations we

researched
